The stretch of 401 between Windsor and London has earned the name "Carnage Alley." It is straight, flat agricultural land for hundreds of kilometres. There is nothing to break the monotony. Highway hypnosis sets in. On September 3, 1999, an 87-vehicle pileup near Manning Road in fog killed 8 people and injured 45 more. Historically, more than 50 of the roughly 80 annual 401 fatalities occurred on this stretch alone.

26.4% of Fatal Crashes Are Fatigue-Related

An Ontario Ministry of Transportation study examining a 5-year period found that 26.4% of all fatal and injury crashes in Ontario (excluding property-damage-only) were fatigue-related. That is more than one in four. Transport Canada puts the national figure at 20% of fatal collisions. In 2006, an estimated 167,000 Ontario drivers were involved in at least one crash due to fatigued or drowsy driving. The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) surveyed 750 Ontario drivers and found that 14.5% had fallen asleep or nodded off while driving in the past year, extrapolating to approximately 1,280,000 drivers across the province.

What Fatigue Actually Does Behind the Wheel

There is a reason researchers keep comparing drowsy driving to drunk driving. The impairments are remarkably similar. A landmark study published in Nature (Dawson and Reid, 1997) measured the cognitive and motor performance of subjects kept awake for extended periods and compared them to subjects given alcohol. The findings:

The difference between a drunk driver and a drowsy driver? A drunk driver might react slowly to a brake light ahead. A drowsy driver might not react at all. Microsleep episodes, involuntary fragments of sleep lasting 1 to 15 seconds, are the most dangerous consequence of fatigue behind the wheel. At 100 km/h on the 401, a 4-second microsleep means your vehicle travels the length of a football field with nobody conscious at the controls.

A study found that 74% of men who drove after 27 hours of sleep deprivation experienced microsleeps after an average of just 52 minutes behind the wheel. Even a single night of sleep restriction nearly tripled the number of microsleep episodes during a tracking task (from 11.4 to 27.9). You do not decide to have a microsleep. The AAA Foundation Numbers

In 2016, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety published one of the most important studies on sleep and crash risk. They compared drivers who got 7 or more hours of sleep to those who got less:

Jake Nelson, AAA's Director of Traffic Safety Advocacy, said it plainly: "A driver who has slept for less than five hours has a crash risk comparable to someone driving drunk."
