If what you experience after meals is closer to the latter -- a profound fatigue, difficulty functioning, or a crash that interferes with your day -- something more than ordinary postprandial somnolence may be at play.
Sleepy After Eating vs Exhausted After Eating: The Difference
Ordinary post-meal sleepiness is mild to moderate in intensity, peaks around 30 to 60 minutes after eating, and typically resolves within one to two hours. It is uncomfortable but manageable. You can push through it with effort, a short walk, or a coffee.
Post-meal exhaustion is qualitatively different. It is more severe, may take longer to resolve, can be accompanied by additional symptoms (brain fog, shakiness, lightheadedness, or irritability), and often feels disproportionate to what was eaten. If you finish a normal-sized lunch and feel as though you need to lie down for two hours to recover, that pattern is worth taking seriously.
