Quick Answer: The ideal feng shui bed placement is the commanding position: diagonally opposite the door, with a clear view of the entrance, a solid wall behind your headboard, and your feet never pointing directly out the door. This reduces nighttime anxiety and allows deeper sleep. Research by Mak and Ng (2005) confirms that door-visible bed positions correlate with better reported sleep quality.

The Commanding Position Explained
Every feng shui bed placement conversation starts here. The commanding position is the single most important rule in bedroom feng shui, and it is the one with the most support from environmental psychology.
Picture your bedroom from above. The door is the entry point for all energy (chi) flowing into the room. The commanding position places your bed where you have maximum awareness of that entry point without being directly in its path.
Commanding Position Checklist
Your bed is in the commanding position when:
- You can see the bedroom door while lying down
- Your bed is not directly in line with the door (not straight across from it)
- There is a solid wall behind your headboard (not a window)
- You are not next to the door or on the same wall as the door
- There is equal space on both sides of the bed (not pushed against a side wall)
The ideal spot is typically the far corner diagonally opposite the door, angled so you face the entrance. This gives you the widest field of awareness with the most protection behind you.
Why does this matter physiologically? Your brainstem contains a structure called the reticular activating system. Part of its job is monitoring your environment for threats, even while you sleep. When your bed faces away from the door, this system stays partially engaged because the brain cannot passively monitor the entry point. The result: lighter sleep, more frequent awakenings, and a subtle undercurrent of alertness that prevents deep rest.
Brad sees this play out at deliveries. "I have lost count of the number of times someone tells me their new mattress is not as comfortable as they expected, and then I walk into their bedroom and the bed is facing the wall with the door behind them. We help them move it, and suddenly the same mattress feels different. It is the same Restonic ComfortCare with the same 1,222 coils. The mattress did not change. The position did."
Feng Shui Bed Direction Chart
Traditional feng shui goes beyond just the commanding position. Classical schools use compass directions to determine the most favourable sleeping orientation based on your personal kua number (calculated from your birth year and gender).
General Compass Direction Guidelines
- Head pointing North: Considered calming and restorative. Associated with career and life path energy. Many feng shui masters recommend this for deep sleep, though some traditional schools avoid it (in Chinese culture, bodies are laid north in burial)
- Head pointing South: Associated with recognition and fame energy. Can be stimulating. Better for people who need more passion and drive, potentially less ideal for light sleepers
- Head pointing East: Associated with growth, family, and new beginnings. Generally considered excellent for younger people and those starting new chapters in life. The sunrise energy supports vitality
- Head pointing West: Associated with creativity and children. Considered good for contentment and pleasure. A settling, receptive energy suitable for those seeking rest and recovery
A word of honesty: there is no peer-reviewed research confirming that compass direction meaningfully affects sleep quality. The commanding position has research support. Compass direction does not. If following a specific direction forces you out of the commanding position, the commanding position should take priority.
Bed Positions to Avoid
Feng shui is as much about what to avoid as what to do. These positions are considered problematic, and most have practical reasons beyond tradition.
Feng Shui Bed Position Warnings
The coffin position: Feet pointing directly out the bedroom door. In Chinese tradition this mimics how the deceased are carried out of a room. Beyond symbolism, this position often means you are directly in the path of door drafts and hallway noise.
Bed under a window: No solid support behind your head. Feng shui says this weakens your protective energy. Practically, windows leak cold air in Canadian winters and street noise year-round. If your only option is under a window, use a solid, tall headboard and heavy curtains.
Bed against the door wall: Sleeping on the same wall as the door means you cannot see who enters without turning. This triggers the hypervigilance response described in sleep research.
Bed between two doors: If your bedroom has a bathroom door and a closet door on opposite walls, placing the bed between them creates a "rushing chi" corridor. Practically, you get cross-breezes and traffic on both sides.
Bed under a beam: Exposed ceiling beams directly over the bed create what feng shui calls "cutting chi," a pressing energy that can cause headaches and restless sleep. Structurally, beams also create subtle visual weight that the brain registers even with eyes closed.
Feng Shui Bed Placement in Small Rooms
The commanding position is ideal, but what happens when your bedroom is 10 by 10 feet and there is only one wall the bed can go against?
Small bedrooms are common in Brantford, especially in the older homes throughout Eagle Place, West Brant, and the downtown core. Many were built in the 1940s through 1960s when bedroom sizes averaged 20 to 30 percent smaller than today's builds.
Small Room Compromises
- If you cannot face the door: Place a small mirror on the opposite wall so you can see the door's reflection from bed. This is one of the few times feng shui approves a bedroom mirror near the bed
- If the bed must go against a side wall: Leave at least 4 inches of space between the bed and the wall. Place a small nightstand or lamp on the wall side to create symbolic balance
- If the only wall is under a window: Use a solid wooden headboard taller than the windowsill, and hang blackout curtains that extend well past the window frame
- If the room is too small for space around the bed: Compensate with extreme decluttering. A small room with minimal furniture can have better chi flow than a large room packed with pieces
For small bedrooms, mattress size also matters practically. A queen mattress in a 10-by-10 room leaves very little floor space. Consider whether a full (double) mattress might be a better fit. Dorothy at our showroom helps families find the right size for their actual room, not just their wish list. "Sometimes the best feng shui advice is choosing the right mattress size for the room you actually have," she says.
Why Your Headboard Matters
In feng shui, the headboard is not just furniture. It represents the mountain behind you. Mountains in Chinese landscape philosophy provide protection, stability, and support. A solid headboard against a solid wall completes this protective energy.
The best headboards for feng shui are solid (not slatted or with holes), made from wood or upholstered fabric, taller than wide for a sense of stature, and firmly attached to the bed frame or wall.
Avoid metal headboards with bars or spindles (feng shui associates these with imprisonment energy). Avoid headboards with built-in shelving (items above your head create pressure). And avoid headboards that are purely decorative but not structurally solid (the protection needs to feel real to your subconscious).
Bed Placement for Couples
When two people share a bed, feng shui adds a layer of relationship energy to the placement equation.
Equal space on both sides of the bed is essential. If one partner is squeezed against a wall, the feng shui interpretation is that one person's needs are being suppressed. The practical interpretation is that one person cannot get in and out of bed comfortably, leading to disrupted sleep for both.
Matching nightstands create balance. They do not need to be identical, but they should be similar in height and weight. This symmetry represents equal partnership energy.

Feng shui bed placement principles recommend positioning the bed so you can see the door without being directly in line with it, which practitioners call the "command position." Mattress Miracle at 441½ West Street in Brantford respects diverse cultural approaches to bedroom design. Brad notes that regardless of philosophical framework, placing the bed away from windows and exterior walls reduces drafts and noise, which aligns with both feng shui principles and sleep science. Which direction should your bed face in feng shui?
The commanding position (diagonally opposite the door, facing the entrance) is more important than compass direction. If you also want compass guidance, head pointing east supports new growth and vitality, while head pointing north is considered most calming for deep sleep. Always prioritize the commanding position over compass direction.
Is it bad feng shui to have your bed under a window?
Yes. Feng shui recommends a solid wall behind your headboard for protective energy. Windows also let in cold drafts in Canadian winters and street noise. If the window wall is your only option, use a solid tall headboard and heavy blackout curtains to create a sense of solidity behind you.
Can bad bed placement cause insomnia?
It can contribute to poor sleep. Research shows that being unable to see your bedroom door from bed increases nighttime hypervigilance (Mak & Ng, 2005). This does not cause insomnia directly, but it can make falling asleep harder and increase nighttime awakenings. If you have persistent insomnia, consult a doctor. If you have mild sleep difficulties, bed placement is worth trying.
What if my bedroom door is directly across from the bed?
If your feet point straight at the door (the "coffin position"), place a trunk or bench at the foot of the bed to create a buffer. A tall plant between the bed and door can also redirect chi flow. Alternatively, angle the bed slightly so it is not in direct line with the doorway.
Does bed placement matter more than mattress quality?
Both matter, but your mattress has a larger direct impact on sleep quality. A properly supportive mattress like our Restonic ComfortCare determines spinal alignment, pressure relief, and pain prevention. Bed placement affects your psychological sense of safety and room energy. Ideally, get both right. But if you must choose one, invest in the mattress first.
