Two Very Different Products Called "Futon Mattress"
The word "futon" is applied to two completely different products in the Canadian market, and understanding which you need matters before you start shopping.
The original Japanese futon is a thin, rollable cotton batting sleeping surface, the shikibuton, typically 5-8 cm thick. It's placed directly on tatami mats or hardwood for sleeping, then rolled up and stored in a cupboard during the day. These are minimalist, require regular airing, and are designed for traditional Japanese floor-level living.
The Western "futon" is something else entirely: a thick foam or innerspring mattress (10-20 cm) that folds in half along with a bifold metal or wood frame, converting from a sofa position to a sleeping position. This is a sofa bed by another name. The mattress is designed to function both as a seat (in folded position) and as a bed (unfolded).
Western Futon Mattresses in Canada
Western-style futon mattresses are available across Canadian furniture retailers:
- IKEA Canada: IKEA's sofa bed range includes compatible mattresses. Models like the HOLMSUND and FRIHETEN include integrated mattresses. Replacement or upgraded futon mattresses in IKEA's sizes are available on Amazon.ca.
- The Brick and Leon's: Carry complete futon sofa sets (frame + mattress). Mid-range pricing with delivery options.
- Amazon.ca: Wide selection of replacement futon mattresses in standard sizes (twin, double/full). Foam-core models are most common; innerspring futon mattresses are heavier but more durable as seating.
For a futon used primarily as a guest bed, innerspring futon mattresses outperform foam for sleeping comfort. For a futon used primarily as a sofa, the mattress firmness matters for seating rather than sleeping, foam options work well. For dual-use, innerspring provides better balance.
Japanese-Style Futons in Canada
Traditional cotton shikibuton futons are available through specialty Japanese homewares retailers and on Amazon.ca. These are a niche product in Canada. They require regular airing and occasional sun exposure to maintain loft and hygiene. The cotton batting compresses over time and should be refluffed periodically.
Floor sleeping on a traditional futon without an elevated bed frame is practised by some Canadians for posture reasons or cultural preference. If this is the use case, confirm that the floor surface allows adequate airflow under the futon, moisture accumulates on cold floors, and a futon left directly on hardwood can develop mould from the condensation differential.

A traditional Japanese futon (shikibuton) is a thin, rollable cotton mattress for floor sleeping, typically 5-8 cm thick, folded and stored during the day. A Western futon mattress is thick (10-20 cm) foam or innerspring, designed to fold with a bifold sofa frame, converting between sofa and bed positions. They share a name but are very different products for different purposes.
Where can I buy a futon mattress in Canada?
Western-style futon mattresses are at IKEA Canada, The Brick, Leon's, and Amazon.ca. Traditional Japanese shikibuton futons are available through specialty Japanese retailers and Amazon.ca. Replacement futon mattresses for sofa frames in standard sizes are widely available on Amazon.ca at $80-$200 CAD depending on construction type.

Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "Futon mattresses are a common first step for people setting up a spare room on a tight budget. They work for that. When guests start complaining about their back after staying over, that's usually the signal it's time for a proper mattress."
