Quick Answer: A half-queen mattress measures 30 inches wide by 80 inches long, exactly half of a standard queen (60" x 80"). Two half-queens placed side by side create a split queen setup that lets each partner choose a different firmness level. Availability in Canada is limited, but split king systems using twin XL mattresses offer a more practical alternative.

One of the most common conversations in our Brantford showroom starts the same way: "We need different firmnesses, but we are not ready for two separate beds." Couples with different body types, sleep positions, or pain conditions often struggle with a single mattress that has to be a compromise for both people. A split queen, made from two half-queen mattresses, is one solution to this problem.
Brad, our senior consultant, has been fitting couples with split setups since the 1990s. "The idea is simple," he says. "Each person gets their own firmness on their own side, but you are still sleeping on the same bed. No gap in the middle if you use the right foundation, and you can still use standard queen bedding."
This guide explains what a half-queen mattress actually is, where to find one in Canada, and whether the more widely available split king might be a better option for your situation.

What Is a Half-Queen Mattress?
A half-queen mattress is exactly what it sounds like: a mattress that is half the width of a standard queen. In Canadian mattress sizing, a queen is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. A half-queen is therefore 30 inches wide by 80 inches long.
Half-Queen Dimensions Compared
- Half-queen: 30" W x 80" L (each side of a split queen)
- Twin: 38" W x 75" L (wider but shorter)
- Twin XL: 38" W x 80" L (wider, same length as queen)
- Full/Double: 54" W x 75" L (too wide, too short)
- Standard Queen: 60" W x 80" L (what two half-queens equal)
The critical measurement is the 30-inch width. This is narrower than a twin (38 inches), which means each person in a split queen setup has less personal space than they would in a twin bed. For most adults, 30 inches is adequate but snug. Side sleepers who stretch out their arms may find it restrictive.
Why the Size Matters
The 30-inch width of a half-queen is the primary reason this size has limited popularity. At 30 inches, each sleeper has roughly the same width as a standard crib mattress. Most adults can sleep comfortably on this width, but it does not leave much room for movement. This is why many couples who want split comfort end up choosing a split king instead, where each half is a twin XL at 38 inches wide.
Who Needs Split Comfort
Not every couple needs different mattress firmnesses. In our experience at Mattress Miracle, the couples who benefit most from a split setup share certain characteristics.
When Partners Need Different Support
Research by Jacobson et al. (2008) in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine established that mattress firmness affects pain outcomes differently based on body weight, sleep position, and spinal condition. A 130-lb side sleeper and a 220-lb back sleeper have fundamentally different support requirements. The lighter sleeper needs a softer surface for pressure relief at the shoulders and hips, while the heavier sleeper needs firmer support to prevent excessive sinking at the pelvis.
Couples Who Benefit Most from Split Comfort
- Significant weight difference: When partners differ by more than 50 lbs, a single firmness rarely works for both
- Different sleep positions: Side sleepers need softer surfaces than back or stomach sleepers
- Medical conditions on one side: One partner has a back injury, fibromyalgia, or post-surgical recovery needs
- Temperature differences: One partner sleeps hot and needs breathable materials, the other wants memory foam that sleeps warmer
- Motion sensitivity: One partner is disturbed by the other's movement and needs better motion isolation
Dorothy, our sleep specialist, often recommends that couples try different firmness levels independently before committing to a split setup. "Come into the showroom and each lie on what feels right for you," she says. "If you both land on the same firmness, you do not need a split. But if one of you needs a plush and the other needs a firm, that difference is real and a single mattress will always be a compromise."
Half-Queen vs Split King: Which Works Better
The split king has largely replaced the half-queen in the Canadian market, and for good reason. Here is how the two compare.
Split Queen vs Split King Comparison
- Individual width: Split queen gives each person 30". Split king gives each person 38". That extra 8 inches per side is significant for comfort
- Total bed width: Split queen totals 60" (queen-sized). Split king totals 76" (king-sized). You need a bigger bedroom for the king
- Mattress availability: Half-queen mattresses are rare in Canada. Twin XL mattresses (for split king) are widely available from every major manufacturer
- Sheet availability: Split queen sheets are hard to find. Split king sheet sets are sold by most bedding retailers
- Adjustable base compatibility: Adjustable bases are commonly available in split king configuration. Split queen adjustable bases are specialty items
- Price: Two twin XL mattresses often cost less than two custom half-queen mattresses
The main advantage of a split queen is that it fits in a queen-sized bedroom. If your room cannot accommodate a king bed (which needs at least 12 feet of wall space), a split queen gives you the split comfort benefit within your existing space. This is relevant in many Brantford home bedrooms where the primary bedroom is sized for a queen.
Finding Half-Queen Mattresses in Canada
Half-queen mattresses are not a standard product in most Canadian mattress stores. This is the biggest practical challenge for couples who want a split queen setup.
Local Availability in Brantford
At Mattress Miracle, we can special-order split queen configurations through our manufacturer relationships. Canadian-made brands like Sleep In offer custom sizing, and some Restonic models can be ordered in half-queen dimensions. Call Brad at (519) 770-0001 to discuss availability and lead times. Custom orders typically take 4-6 weeks.
Some manufacturers that have offered half-queen or split queen options in the Canadian market include:
Canadian Split Queen Sources
- Canadian-made manufacturers: Some smaller Canadian factories produce custom sizes including half-queen. Lead times and minimum orders vary
- Latex mattress manufacturers: Natural latex mattresses are easier to produce in custom sizes because the latex cores can be cut to any dimension
- Foam mattress brands: All-foam mattresses can be cut to half-queen dimensions more easily than innerspring models
- Adjustable bed specialists: Companies that sell split queen adjustable bases often carry matching half-queen mattresses
Be cautious about ordering half-queen mattresses from US retailers. Cross-border shipping adds cost, and return logistics for a mattress that does not work are complicated. Sizing standards can also vary slightly between Canadian and American manufacturers.
Alternatives for Different Firmness Needs
If a true split queen is hard to find or outside your budget, several alternatives provide similar benefits.
Split-Firmness Mattress Toppers
A dual-zone mattress topper sits on top of your existing queen mattress with different firmness on each side. This is the most affordable way to get split comfort. The topper modifies the feel of your mattress without replacing it. One side might be soft memory foam while the other is firmer latex. The join line runs down the centre of the bed.
Flippable Mattresses with Dual Firmness
Some mattresses, including our Canadian-made Sleep In flippable models, have different firmness levels on each side of the same mattress. While this does not give each partner their own firmness simultaneously, it allows you to flip the mattress to try different firmness options and find the best compromise.
Zoned Firmness Mattresses
Zoned mattresses have firmer support in the centre (lumbar area) and softer zones at the head and foot. While they do not address left-right firmness differences, they can reduce the need for a split by providing targeted support where both partners need it most. Our Restonic models with zoned coil systems offer this approach.
The Gap Problem and How to Solve It
The biggest complaint about any split mattress setup is the gap or ridge where the two mattresses meet. A quality split queen foundation with a centre support bar minimizes this gap. You can also use a mattress bridge pad, a thin foam strip that covers the seam and smooths the transition between the two mattresses. For couples who sleep close together, this eliminates the "sleeping in a crack" feeling.
Sheets and Bedding for Split Setups
Bedding a split queen requires some planning. Standard queen sheets work for the top sheet and duvet, but the fitted sheet situation is trickier.
Bedding Solutions for Split Queen
- Fitted sheets: Use two half-queen fitted sheets (30" x 80") or two twin XL sheets tucked under each mattress. Standard queen fitted sheets will slide into the gap
- Top sheet: A standard queen flat sheet works normally over both mattresses
- Duvet/comforter: A standard queen duvet covers the full width. Some couples prefer two individual duvets (the Scandinavian method) for independent temperature control
- Mattress protector: Use two individual protectors rather than one queen-sized protector, which will not fit properly over separate mattresses
Finding half-queen fitted sheets can be difficult. Some bedding companies sell "split queen" sheet sets, but availability in Canada is limited. An alternative is to use twin XL fitted sheets (38" x 80") and tuck the excess fabric under each mattress. The extra 8 inches of width gets tucked under and stays in place reasonably well.

Is a half-queen the same size as a twin XL?
No. A half-queen is 30" x 80" while a twin XL is 38" x 80". The twin XL is 8 inches wider. Two twin XLs side by side create a 76-inch-wide bed (king size), while two half-queens create a 60-inch-wide bed (queen size). They are the same length but different widths.
Can I use a regular queen bed frame with a split queen mattress?
Yes, a standard queen bed frame works with two half-queen mattresses placed side by side. The frame dimensions are the same. However, you should add a centre support to prevent the mattresses from separating during the night. A bunkie board or solid platform base works better than a slatted frame for split setups.
Will I feel the gap between the two half-queen mattresses?
Some gap is unavoidable with any split mattress setup. A mattress bridge pad (a thin foam strip placed over the seam) minimizes the sensation. The gap is more noticeable with innerspring mattresses than with foam or latex, which compress and conform more closely at the edges.
Can I get a split queen adjustable base?
Split queen adjustable bases exist but are less common than split king models. They allow each partner to adjust their head and foot elevation independently while staying within a queen-sized footprint. Check with our Brantford showroom about current availability for adjustable bases in split queen configuration.
Is a split queen more expensive than a regular queen?
Generally, yes. Two half-queen mattresses cost more than one queen mattress because you are buying two separate mattresses with independent construction. The price difference varies by brand but expect to pay 40-60% more for a split queen setup compared to a single queen of the same model.
