Headboards have a slightly odd status in the bedroom furniture world. They are neither essential nor purely decorative. They are one of those items that becomes obviously useful the moment you do not have one and your pillows spend the night falling behind the mattress.

Types of Headboards

Panel Headboards

A solid panel, typically wood or upholstered, with a flat or slightly shaped top edge. Panel headboards are the most common type and range from simple plank-style slabs to carved wood with decorative insets. They are straightforward to clean and provide a clear back support surface.

Upholstered Headboards

Fabric or leather-wrapped foam padding over a frame. These are the most comfortable for leaning against. They absorb sound slightly, which is a minor bonus in shared bedrooms. Upholstered headboards come in virtually every design from button-tufted traditional styles to clean-lined modern panels. The main maintenance consideration is fabric care: some materials are more stain-resistant than others.

Slatted Headboards

Vertical or horizontal wooden slats rather than a solid panel. These work well in more casual or Scandinavian-inspired bedrooms and provide airflow (which matters when the headboard is against an exterior wall). They do not provide the same pillow support as a solid panel because pillows can slide between slats.

Metal Headboards

Wrought iron or steel frame designs, typically with bars or decorative patterns. Metal headboards are durable, easy to clean, and work well in traditional, industrial, or rustic designs. They are not comfortable for leaning against directly, which is a practical limitation.

Bookcase Headboards

Headboards with integrated shelving. These are practical in smaller bedrooms where bedside table space is limited. They can hold books, lamps, alarm clocks, and phone chargers. The added weight and depth means they typically need to be freestanding or wall-anchored for stability.

Floating or Wall-Mounted Headboards

Attached directly to the wall rather than the bed frame. These are useful when the bed frame does not have headboard attachment points, or when a cleaner modern look is desired. They can be positioned at any height and are the most secure option for people who lean hard against the headboard.

Sizing Your Headboard

Getting the size right matters more than most people expect. A headboard that is too small looks like an afterthought. One that is too large overwhelms the room.

Width

The headboard should be at least as wide as the mattress and typically 2 to 5 cm wider on each side. For a Queen mattress (153 cm), a headboard of 155 to 165 cm works well. Going wider than 165 cm on a Queen is fine for a design statement but can feel heavy in smaller bedrooms.

Height

Standard headboard heights are 90 to 100 cm from the floor. Tall headboards (120 to 180 cm) work well in rooms with high ceilings. In a room with a standard 240 cm ceiling, a very tall headboard can make the space feel cramped. Measure the wall space and consider the visual proportions before committing.

Attachment Methods

Strut or Leg Attachment

The headboard has legs that extend down to the floor or that bolt to the bed frame using the frame's pre-drilled headboard holes. This is the most common type. It is adjustable for height and does not require wall anchoring.

A simple headboard with metal hooks that hang over the top of the bed frame. Less stable than bolted connections and can rattle with movement.

Wall Mounting

The headboard is fixed directly to the wall with screws or French cleats. This is the most stable method and the one to use for heavy headboards or bookcase styles. Wall mounting requires locating wall studs (or using appropriate drywall anchors) and is permanent.

Freestanding

Bookcase headboards and some heavier panel headboards stand independently against the wall. They do not attach to the bed or the wall but rely on their own weight for stability.

How to Choose the Right Headboard

Beyond dimensions, a few practical questions narrow the field quickly:

• Do you read or sit up in bed? Upholstered. This is non-negotiable for comfort.
• Do you have children or pets? Leather or performance fabric for durability and easy cleaning.
• Is your bedroom small? Lower-profile headboard, avoid bookcase styles that add depth.
• Is this a long-term piece or temporary? Solid wood or quality upholstered for long-term; budget panel for temporary.
• Does your bed frame have headboard attachment holes? If not, plan for wall mounting or a freestanding style.
