Understanding the chemistry behind blood -- specifically what haemoglobin does under heat -- changes how you approach the whole process.
Why Cold Water Is Non-Negotiable
Blood is roughly 55% plasma (mostly water, with dissolved proteins) and 45% cellular material (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets). The red colour comes from haemoglobin, an iron-containing protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen.
Proteins have a critical vulnerability: heat causes them to denature. Denaturation is not just a fancy word for dissolving -- it means the protein's three-dimensional structure unravels and then re-bonds in a new, tangled configuration. Once denatured haemoglobin bonds to fabric fibres, it is essentially cooked into place. The same process happens when you cook an egg white: a clear, soluble protein becomes an opaque, insoluble solid that cannot be reversed.
Haemoglobin begins denaturing at temperatures around 60°C. A hot tap in most Canadian homes runs at 49-60°C. If you pour that water on fresh blood, you are cooking the stain in. You will never fully remove it after that point.

When you apply concentrated salt to a fresh blood stain, the salt draws moisture (and dissolved proteins) out of the fabric through osmotic pressure -- water moves from areas of low solute concentration (inside the stain) to high solute concentration (the salt layer).

- Spread generously over the stain
- Leave for 15-20 minutes

When it contacts haemoglobin, it donates an oxygen atom, breaking down the iron compound that gives blood its colour. You will see bubbling -- that is the oxidation reaction happening. The bubbling also physically lifts material out of the fabric fibres.
How to apply:
- Pour a small amount directly onto the stain or apply with a spray bottle
- Allow to bubble for 5-10 minutes
- Blot with a clean white cloth (coloured cloths may transfer dye)
- Do not over-saturate -- moisture soaking deep into a mattress creates mould risk
Test first on an inconspicuous area. Hydrogen peroxide can lighten some dark mattress fabrics. Most white and light-coloured mattress ticking is fine, but test on a hidden corner before applying widely.
Note: Hydrogen peroxide loses potency over time, especially after opening. If the bottle has been open for more than 6 months, it may not bubble effectively. Buy a fresh bottle for best results.
Step 3: Enzyme Cleaner for Proteins
Enzyme cleaners contain protease enzymes that break peptide bonds -- the chemical links between amino acids in proteins. Haemoglobin, albumin, and fibrinogen are all proteins, so a protease-based cleaner addresses all three staining components at the molecular level.
