Disposal Options in Ontario

Getting rid of an old mattress in Ontario is more straightforward than many people expect. The main legitimate options are:

1. Municipal Large Item (Bulk) Pickup

Most Ontario municipalities offer free large item pickup as part of their waste management services. This is usually the most convenient option for most residents. You schedule a pickup online or by phone and leave the mattress at the curb on the designated day. Requirements vary by city: some require you to wrap the mattress in plastic, others don't.

Processing times for scheduling vary. In larger cities, wait times can be several weeks during peak periods. Plan ahead if you're timing the removal with a new mattress delivery.

2. Transfer Station Drop-Off

Ontario waste transfer stations (formerly called waste dumps or disposal sites) typically accept mattresses for a small disposal fee. You deliver the mattress yourself to the transfer station during operating hours. This is faster than scheduling a pickup and gives you control over timing. Check your local municipality's website for hours and accepted items.

3. Mattress Recycling Programs

Mattress recycling recovers materials like steel, foam and fabric for reuse rather than sending them to landfill. Several programs operate in Ontario, which we cover in detail below.

4. Donation

If your mattress is in good condition (no stains, no structural damage, no bed bug history), local charities, shelters, Habitat for Humanity ReStores, and community organizations may accept it.

5. Retailer Removal (with New Purchase)

Mattress Recycling

Ontario's mattress recycling ecosystem is less developed than some US states that have mandated producer responsibility programs, but options exist:

Mattress Recycling Council / Bye Bye Mattress

This US-based programme operates in states with mattress stewardship legislation. It doesn't currently operate in Ontario, but the recycling industry is expanding.

Local Private Recyclers

Some private recycling companies in Ontario will accept mattresses for a fee (typically $20–$50). These companies deconstruct the mattress and recover steel coils, foam, fabric and wood for separate recycling streams. Steel coils in innerspring mattresses are 100% recyclable. Foam can be recycled into carpet underlay or other products. Search for "mattress recycling Ontario" to find current providers in your region.

ReGreen / Registered Recyclers

Several Ontario-based waste management companies accept mattresses. Check the Ontario Ministry of the Environment for registered waste haulers in your area.

Why Recycling Matters

Mattresses are one of the most difficult items for landfills to manage. They're bulky, take up disproportionate space, don't compact well, and the spring components can damage compacting equipment. The foam and fabric materials take decades to break down. Recycling diverts these materials effectively. When possible, choose recycling over landfill.

Donation Options

If your mattress is in good condition, donation extends its useful life and benefits someone who needs it. However, many donation organisations have become stricter about accepting mattresses due to bed bug concerns. General guidelines:

• Condition required: Clean (no visible stains), structurally intact (no sagging or broken coils), no bed bug history
• Habitat for Humanity ReStore: Some locations accept clean, usable mattresses , call ahead to confirm your local store's policy
• Local shelters and community organizations: Brantford-area shelters and transitional housing programs may accept mattresses in good condition , contact them directly
• Facebook Marketplace / Kijiji "Free" listings: Listing a clean, usable mattress as free pickup is a practical option that lets someone in need take it directly
• If in doubt, don't donate: An organization that accepts a mattress with concealed problems faces a disposal cost. Be honest about condition.

When You're Buying a New Mattress

If you're replacing an old mattress with a new one, coordinating removal with delivery is the easiest path. Before your new mattress arrives:

1. Confirm with the retailer whether old mattress removal is included
2. If not, schedule municipal pickup or private recycling for a date close to delivery
3. If donating, coordinate pickup before the new mattress arrives so you're not storing two mattresses
4. Strip the old mattress completely before the delivery crew arrives
5. Leave a clear path for the new mattress to be brought in

What Not to Do

• Don't leave it on the curb without scheduling pickup. Dumping without scheduling is illegal in Ontario and can result in fines. Schedule through the proper channels.
• Don't put it in a dumpster. Mattresses are specifically excluded from most commercial and residential dumpster waste agreements. You'll be fined and the mattress will need to be removed anyway.
• Don't burn it. Mattress materials (foam, adhesives, synthetic fabrics, spring wire) produce toxic smoke when burned. Never burn a mattress, even in rural areas.
