Quick Answer: To put a fitted sheet on, start at one corner and work diagonally to the opposite corner, then pull the elastic band under the mattress. For flat sheets, leave 30 cm of overhang at the top, tuck the foot end tightly, and fold hospital corners on each side. Use sheet straps on deep mattresses to keep everything in place.

There is a particular kind of frustration in waking up at 3 a.m. to find your fitted sheet has worked its way off the corner of the mattress. Again. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. It is one of the most common complaints we hear at Mattress Miracle, right after "my old mattress was making my back hurt."
Getting sheets on properly is partly technique and partly the right fit. This guide covers both, starting with the fitted sheet, moving through hospital corners on flat sheets, and ending with some practical solutions for keeping everything in place through the night.
How to Put On a Fitted Sheet
A fitted sheet has elastic sewn into the hem, either around the entire perimeter or just at the four corners. Either way, the technique is the same.
Step-by-Step: Fitted Sheet
Step 1: Find the Long Sides
Fitted sheets have a longer dimension and a shorter dimension, matching the mattress length and width. Hold the sheet up and feel for this. Most people can identify the long sides by the slightly different feel of the elastic distribution, or you can look for the label, it usually sits at one of the foot corners.
Step 2: Start at One Head Corner
Stand at the head of the bed. Place one corner of the sheet over the mattress corner, pulling it firmly so the elastic tucks under. The deeper the pocket, the more you need to tuck. Aim for no bunching at the top of the corner.
Step 3: Work Diagonally to the Opposite Foot Corner
Walk to the opposite foot corner (diagonal, not adjacent). Pull that corner down and tuck it under. This is the key move. Most people try to do adjacent corners, which creates tension in the wrong direction and makes the sheet harder to seat. Diagonal corners pull the sheet taut across the mattress surface.
Step 4: Do the Remaining Two Corners
With two diagonal corners secured, the remaining two are much easier. Pull each corner pocket over the mattress corner and tuck. You should feel the elastic pull snug.
Step 5: Smooth the Surface
Run your hands across the sheet surface, smoothing any wrinkles toward the edges. If the sheet keeps puckering at the centre, the pocket is probably too shallow for your mattress (more on that below).

Tips for Deep and Thick Mattresses
A standard mattress sits between 20 cm and 25 cm tall. Many modern mattresses, including pillow-top models and those with thick comfort layers, run 30 cm to 38 cm. Standard fitted sheets have pockets of about 25 cm to 30 cm, which means they may not fit at all.
Pocket Depth: What the Numbers Mean
Sheet pocket depth is measured from the hem at the side to the deepest point of the elastic pocket. A 30 cm pocket does not mean it fits a 30 cm mattress, the hem itself takes up space. For a 30 cm mattress, look for a pocket depth of at least 33 cm to 35 cm, labelled as "deep pocket" or "extra deep pocket" on the packaging.
If you have a thicker mattress and a standard sheet, here is what you can do:
- Buy deep-pocket sheets. Look specifically for sheets labelled "deep pocket" (30 to 35 cm pocket depth) or "extra deep pocket" (38 cm and over). Standard sheets will not lie flat on a tall mattress and will pop off every night.
- Use the diagonal-corner technique above. It gives you the most elastic stretch before you even think about clips.
- Try a mattress encasement or topper with skirt. If you have added a mattress topper that pushed your height over 35 cm, you may need to size up to extra deep pocket sheets.
What We See in Our Brantford Showroom
Many customers who buy our Kingsdown and Sleep In mattresses discover that their existing sheets no longer fit properly. Both brands tend to have generous comfort layers. We always recommend checking mattress height before buying new bedding, it saves a second trip to the store. Brad usually tells customers to bring a measuring tape when shopping for sheets, or at least to look up the mattress height in the specifications before heading out.
How to Put On a Flat Sheet with Hospital Corners
Hospital corners are a military-style fold technique that holds a flat sheet firmly in place without clips or straps. Once you do it a few times, it takes about 30 seconds per corner.
Hospital Corners: Step by Step
Step 1: Lay the Flat Sheet Over the Mattress
Spread the flat sheet over the bed with the finished (decorative) side face down if you plan to fold the top back. Leave about 30 cm of sheet hanging over the head of the bed. This will be folded back later to show the sheet's better side.
Step 2: Tuck the Foot End
Starting at the foot of the bed, tuck the bottom of the sheet under the mattress. Pull it firmly so there is no slack, working from the centre of the foot outward toward each corner.
Step 3: Create the Corner Fold
Stand at one foot corner. Lift the side of the sheet hanging down and lay it up onto the mattress top, creating a 45-degree diagonal fold at the corner. Hold that fold in place with one hand.
Step 4: Tuck the Lower Hanging Portion
With the diagonal fold pinned up, take the lower hanging portion of the sheet and tuck it snugly under the mattress. Pull it firmly.
Step 5: Drop and Tuck the Folded Portion
Let the diagonal fold drop back down the side of the mattress. It should now hang neatly at a 45-degree angle. Tuck this remaining side portion under the mattress as well. The result is a tightly folded corner with no loose fabric and no popping overnight.
Step 6: Repeat on the Other Foot Corner
Repeat steps 3 through 5 on the opposite foot corner. Tuck the sides along the length of the mattress as firmly as you like.
Flat Sheet Tip: Top Fold
Once the sheet is tucked at the foot and sides, fold the top 30 cm back over your duvet or blanket. This protects your blanket from direct contact with your face and lets you display a prettier hemline. Many luxury hotels use a 40 cm fold to show off monogrammed or embroidered sheet edges.
Keeping Sheets from Slipping Off
Even with good technique, some sheets refuse to stay put. The culprits are usually one of three things: shallow pockets, slippery mattress fabric, or a restless sleeper.
Sheet Straps and Clips
Sheet straps (also called bed sheet fasteners or sheet suspenders) attach to the four corners of your fitted sheet and run diagonally under the mattress to hold everything in place. They cost between $10 and $25 at most Canadian home goods stores and make a genuine difference on tall or slippery mattresses.
Corner clips work similarly but attach only at each corner. They are simpler but slightly less secure than the full diagonal strap design.
Grip Pads and Mattress Pads
A non-slip mattress pad or grip pad placed between the mattress and the fitted sheet creates friction that holds the sheet in position. This is especially useful if your mattress top surface is made of a slick fabric such as bamboo or polyester. Some mattress protectors come with a non-slip underside built in. Our bedding accessories collection includes several that work well for this purpose.
Better-Fitting Sheets
Honestly, the most effective long-term fix is sheets that actually fit your mattress. If your fitted sheet constantly pops off, measure your mattress height before buying new ones. Write down the height in centimetres, then look for a pocket depth that exceeds that measurement by at least 5 cm.
Quick Sizing Guide
- Mattress under 25 cm: Standard pocket (25-28 cm) works fine
- Mattress 25-30 cm: Deep pocket (30-35 cm) recommended
- Mattress over 30 cm: Extra deep pocket (38 cm+) required
- Mattress with topper: Measure total height including topper
Making the Bed Faster
If you make your bed every morning, which research from the National Sleep Foundation suggests is associated with better sleep hygiene habits, there are a few ways to speed up the process without cutting corners on the result.
The Roll Method for Fitted Sheets
Instead of unfolding the fitted sheet and trying to orient it over the mattress, roll it lengthwise and set it at one edge of the mattress. Unroll it across the mattress toward the opposite side, then seat the corners. Some people find this faster because you are never lifting the sheet above your head.
Pre-Tuck the Duvet
If you use a duvet, folding it in thirds lengthwise before you go to bed makes the morning easier. You unfold it, lay it, and you are done in 20 seconds. No fluffing required.
Two-Person Method
If someone else is in the house, each person takes one side of the mattress. One person seats two corners on one side while the other does the same on the opposite side. The sheet goes on in about a quarter of the time, and neither person has to lean awkwardly across the bed.
Does Making Your Bed Matter?
Research published in the journal Sleep Health found that people who made their beds reported better sleep quality and felt more productive throughout the day. The relationship is not causal, making your bed does not improve sleep directly, but it appears to be part of a broader pattern of sleep hygiene habits that collectively support better rest. Starting and ending the day with a tidy bed is a low-effort signal to your brain that your bedroom is a space for sleep.
Caring for Your Sheets
Sheets should be washed weekly or at minimum every two weeks. Body oils, sweat, and skin cells accumulate quickly, and a clean sleeping environment reduces dust mites and allergens. For guidance on washing frequency and technique, our article on how often bedsheets should be washed covers the details.
When you do wash sheets, avoid washing them with items that have hooks or zippers, these can snag and tear the fabric. And if you are washing a pillow in the washing machine at the same time, run them in separate loads or balance the machine with two pillows at once.
Proper sheet care also extends the life of your pillows and pillow covers. Fresh sheets mean less transfer of oils to pillowcases, which means pillows stay cleaner longer.

Why does my fitted sheet keep coming off one corner?
Almost always, it is a pocket depth issue. The sheet is not deep enough to stay anchored on your mattress, so when you move during sleep, it pops off the corner. Try the diagonal-corner technique when putting the sheet on, and if it still comes loose, invest in deep-pocket sheets or sheet straps. A sheet that fits well should not need to be re-tucked more than once a week.
Does it matter which direction the fitted sheet goes?
Yes. The sheet should be oriented so the longer dimension runs the length of the mattress. Most fitted sheets have a label sewn into one of the foot corners, which helps with orientation. If you put the sheet on sideways, the elastic will pull in the wrong direction and the sheet will not stay on overnight.
What is the right way to fold a fitted sheet for storage?
The common method is to tuck one corner inside the other to create a rectangle, fold the sides in, and roll or fold flat. The hospital-style fold involves nesting all four corners, creating a flat rectangle. Neither method is wrong, but the nesting technique tends to be less bulky on a linen shelf.
Do I need both a fitted sheet and a flat sheet?
No. Many people skip the flat sheet entirely and use only a fitted sheet under a duvet with a removable cover. This simplifies making the bed considerably. The flat sheet is more common in hotel setups and in warmer climates where people sleep without a heavy duvet. In Ontario, most households use a duvet or comforter, and the flat sheet is optional.
