Mattress Protectors: The Most Important Step
Regardless of mattress material, a quality mattress protector is the single most impactful allergy-reduction measure:

The mite and their allergens are physically trapped inside, unable to reach the sleeper. This works for any mattress regardless of material

- Materials for allergy protectors: Look for cotton or bamboo outer fabric (breathable) with a membrane barrier layer that blocks allergens and moisture while allowing vapor transmission. Avoid PVC-backed protectors, they can produce crinkling sounds and reduce breathability
- Washing the protector: Wash the mattress protector regularly (monthly or when soiled) at 60°C, which kills dust mites. This maintains the barrier's effectiveness
Hypoallergenic Bedding
The mattress is only part of the allergen picture, pillows, duvets, and bedding also accumulate mites and allergens:
- Pillow covers: Allergen-proof pillow encasings (same barrier technology as mattress covers) should be used on all pillows in an allergy-sensitive bedroom
- Pillow replacement: Pillows should be replaced every 1–2 years even with covers, mite populations in pillows without encasings can reach problematic levels quickly. With encasings, replacement can be less frequent
- Duvet fill: Synthetic duvet fills (polyester) are easier to wash at high temperature than down and less hospitable to mites. - Bedding storage: Store seasonal bedding in airtight bags or containers, open storage allows mite colonization during off-season months
The Latex Allergy Exception
Natural latex mattresses are generally the best choice for dust mite allergies, but are contraindicated for people with latex allergies:
- Latex allergy (Type I hypersensitivity to natural rubber latex proteins) can cause reactions ranging from contact dermatitis to anaphylaxis
- Higher risk populations: healthcare workers (frequent latex glove exposure), people who have had multiple surgeries (repeated latex medical device exposure), and people with spina bifida
