Here is what the photos do not show: MALM nightstands are made primarily from particle board with a paper foil or veneer finish. The drawer slides are basic. Water rings from a glass left overnight can permanently damage the surface. For the price, you get a nightstand that looks sharp for a couple of years but starts showing wear relatively quickly.

IKEA HEMNES Nightstand (~$130 to $170)

HEMNES sits at the top of IKEA's nightstand range. Priced between $130 and $170, it offers a more traditional look with stained finishes and panelled drawer fronts. The construction is a step up from MALM, using some solid pine components alongside particle board.

HEMNES is the line where customers start asking us a telling question: "For this price, could I get something better?" And the answer, honestly, is yes. Once you cross the $130 mark, you are in the range where solid wood options from Canadian manufacturers become competitive.

Where JYSK sometimes edges ahead is in sales and promotions. They run frequent discounts that can bring a $120 nightstand down to $70 or $80. If you are furnishing a rental property or a room with a short-term purpose, a JYSK nightstand on sale is a reasonable choice.

But the same core limitation applies. Particle board is particle board, regardless of the logo on the box. The joints loosen over time, the surfaces chip, and the drawers gradually lose their smooth action. For furniture you want to keep, the material matters more than the brand.

You do not have to buy IKEA furniture to benefit from their design inspiration.
