Quick Answer: Innerspring or Memory Foam?
Innerspring mattresses offer a traditional bouncy feel, strong edge support, and excellent airflow. Memory foam provides superior pressure relief, motion isolation, and body contouring. If you prefer a responsive, cooler sleep surface, go innerspring. If you prioritize pressure relief and sleeping undisturbed by a partner, go memory foam. Today, most manufacturers combine both in hybrids, but pure versions of each still have their place.

Two Very Different Sleep Experiences

Innerspring and memory foam represent the two ends of the mattress spectrum. One pushes back, the other sinks in. One bounces, the other absorbs. Understanding these fundamental differences helps you decide which feel matches how you like to sleep.
Having sold both for over three decades, we can tell you that personal preference matters more than any expert recommendation. Some people try memory foam and never go back. Others try it and come running back to innerspring within a week. Neither reaction is wrong.
Support vs Pressure Relief
These two mattress types solve different problems. Innerspring mattresses excel at support, using coils to push back against your body weight and maintain spinal alignment. Memory foam excels at pressure relief, conforming to your body shape to distribute weight evenly. A study in the European Spine Journal found that medium-firm mattresses of either type reduced back pain, but the mechanisms differ. Innerspring keeps the spine aligned through resistance, while memory foam does it through contouring.
Innerspring Mattresses Explained
Modern innerspring mattresses use one of three coil types:
- Bonnell coils: Traditional hourglass-shaped coils connected by wire. Affordable but transfer motion across the entire bed
- Offset coils: Similar to Bonnell but with flattened tops for better contouring. Mid-range option
- Pocketed coils: Individual coils wrapped in fabric that move independently. Best motion isolation of any innerspring type (also used in hybrids) >
The comfort layer on top of the coils (usually polyfoam, cotton, or wool) is what you actually feel. Cheaper innersprings have thin comfort layers and feel very firm. Premium innersprings have thicker comfort systems that rival hybrids.
Memory Foam Mattresses Explained
Memory foam mattresses typically have 3 layers:
- Comfort layer: 2-4 inches of memory foam that contours to your body
- Transition layer: Medium-density foam that provides gradual support
- Base layer: High-density foam (the thickest layer) that provides structural support
Newer memory foam types include gel-infused (cooler), copper-infused (antimicrobial), and open-cell (more breathable). These innovations address the main complaint about traditional memory foam: heat retention.
Head-to-Head Comparison
Bounce: Innerspring 9/10, Memory Foam 2/10
Motion isolation: Innerspring 4/10, Memory Foam 9/10
Pressure relief: Innerspring 5/10, Memory Foam 9/10
Edge support: Innerspring 8/10, Memory Foam 4/10
Cooling: Innerspring 8/10, Memory Foam 5/10
Durability: Innerspring 6/10, Memory Foam 7/10
Price range: Innerspring $300-1500, Memory Foam $400-2000
Which Sleeper Type Benefits Most
Stomach sleepers often prefer innerspring because the firm, flat surface keeps hips from sinking too deep. Memory foam can cause the pelvis to drop below the shoulders in stomach sleepers, straining the lower back.
Side sleepers typically prefer memory foam because it relieves pressure at the shoulders and hips. Innerspring can create painful pressure points for side sleepers, especially at the shoulder.
Back sleepers can go either way. A quality innerspring with a good comfort layer or a medium-firm memory foam both work. It comes down to whether you prefer the feel of floating on the surface (innerspring) or sinking into it (memory foam).
The Partnership Question
If you share your bed, this comparison becomes more practical. Innerspring mattresses (especially Bonnell and offset coils) transfer motion. When your partner rolls over, you feel it. Memory foam absorbs motion almost completely. If motion disturbance is a real problem in your relationship, memory foam or a pocketed coil innerspring is the answer. We have had couples in our Brantford showroom
who solved years of sleep disruption simply by switching from a traditional innerspring to memory foam.
Feel the Difference in Person
The innerspring vs memory foam decision is best made by lying on both. We have examples of each in our Brantford showroom, and we encourage you to spend time on both types. Roll around, change positions, and notice how each responds. We have been helping our community make this exact choice since 1997, and we always let the mattress speak for itself.

Is innerspring outdated?
Not at all. Innerspring technology has evolved significantly with pocketed coil systems, zoned support, and better comfort layers. What has declined is the cheap, connected-coil innerspring. Premium innerspring and hybrid mattresses are excellent modern options.
Does memory foam wear out faster than innerspring?
Quality memory foam (density 4+ lb/ft3) lasts 7-9 years. Quality innerspring lasts 6-8 years. The foam comfort layers on innerspring mattresses often wear out before the coils do, while all-foam mattresses wear more evenly. Neither type has a clear durability advantage at similar price points.
Why is memory foam so popular now?
Memory foam exploded in popularity because of online mattress companies that could ship compressed foam in a box. This convenience factor, combined with genuinely good pressure relief, drove adoption. Innerspring mattresses are harder to ship compressed, so they lost market share to online brands despite being excellent products.
Can I put a memory foam topper on an innerspring?
Yes, and this is actually a great compromise. A 2-3 inch memory foam topper on a supportive innerspring gives you the pressure relief of foam with the support and airflow of coils. It is essentially a DIY hybrid at a fraction of the cost.
Which is better for allergies?
Memory foam is generally better for allergies because the dense foam structure resists dust mites more than the open coil structure of innersprings. However, a good mattress protector on either type provides adequate allergen protection.
