Quick Answer: Most new mattresses need 30-90 days to fully break in. During this period, the comfort layers soften and conform to your body. Mild discomfort in the first 2 weeks is normal. However, if you experience sharp pain, worsening symptoms, or numbness, the mattress may be wrong for you, not just new. Our Restonic ComfortCare (1,222 coils, $1,619) typically needs about 30 days.

Why Break-In Happens
A new mattress is not broken in for two reasons: the materials are stiff, and your body is accustomed to your old mattress.
The material side is straightforward. Foams, fibres, and even coil springs are manufactured under tension. Memory foam is denser when new. Pocket coils have not yet been compressed thousands of times. Comfort layers have not conformed to any body shape. All of these materials need repeated compression (from you sleeping on them) to reach their intended feel.
The body side is equally important. If you have been sleeping on a sagging mattress for years, your muscles and joints have adapted to that surface. A new mattress with proper support forces your body into better alignment, which can feel "wrong" initially because it is different from what your body expects. Research in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine (Jacobson et al., 2009) documented this adjustment period, finding that participants reported improved comfort and reduced pain after 28 days on new mattresses, even when initial impressions were mixed.
Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "I tell every customer the same thing: give it 30 nights. Your body needs time to adjust. The worst thing you can do is sleep on a new mattress for three nights, decide it is too firm, and return it. That is not enough time for either the mattress or your body to settle."

Week-by-Week Timeline
| Period | What to Expect | What Is Happening |
|---|---|---|
| Night 1-3 | Feels noticeably different. May feel firmer than in the store. | Materials are at factory stiffness. Your body is reacting to the change. |
| Week 1-2 | Some mild stiffness in the morning. Slight difficulty finding a comfortable position. | Comfort layers beginning to soften. Your muscles adjusting to new alignment. |
| Week 3-4 | Noticeably more comfortable. Morning stiffness reducing. | Foam and fibre conforming to body contours. Body adapting to support profile. |
| Month 2 | Comfort level stabilising. Sleep quality should be improving. | Materials approaching their intended softness. Body fully adjusted. |
| Month 3 | Mattress feels like "yours." Fully broken in. | Comfort layers have conformed. Support core settled at intended firmness. |
Break-In Period by Mattress Type
Different materials break in at different rates:
Break-In by Material
Memory foam: 30-60 days. Dense foam takes longest to soften. Higher-density foams (used in premium mattresses) take longer but also last longer once broken in.
Latex: 14-30 days. Latex is naturally more responsive and reaches its intended feel faster. Both Talalay and Dunlop latex conform relatively quickly.
Pocket coil/hybrid: 30-45 days. The coils themselves settle quickly, but the foam comfort layers above them follow the memory foam timeline. Our Restonic ComfortCare uses pocket coils with foam layers, so expect about 30 days.
Innerspring (Bonnell): 14-21 days. Simpler construction with less foam means shorter break-in. Our budget Restopedic ($330) typically settles within 2-3 weeks.
Flippable mattresses: 21-30 days per side. Each side breaks in independently. The Dream Catcher Flippable needs about a month per side for the comfort layers to conform.
How to Speed Up the Process
Sleep on it every night. The break-in happens through use. Sleeping on the couch "until it softens" is counterproductive. Your body weight and heat are what soften the materials.
Walk on it gently. Carefully walking across the mattress in socks distributes weight across the surface and helps compress the comfort layers more evenly. Do this for a few minutes daily during the first two weeks. Be careful not to damage the mattress by jumping or wearing shoes.
Keep your bedroom warm. Memory foam is temperature-sensitive. In cooler Canadian bedrooms (below 18C), foam takes longer to soften. Keeping the room at 19-21C during the break-in period helps the foam reach its intended responsiveness faster.
Rotate the mattress. If your mattress is not flippable, rotate it 180 degrees (head to foot) after the first two weeks. This ensures even compression and prevents one area from breaking in faster than others.
Use a mattress protector. A breathable protector ($40) retains some body heat near the mattress surface, which helps memory foam soften slightly faster. It also protects your new mattress during the break-in period when you might be sweating more as your body adjusts.
Dorothy, Sleep Specialist: "The customers who have the easiest break-in are the ones who commit to sleeping on the new mattress every night from day one. No going back to the old mattress, no sleeping on the couch. Your body and the mattress need consistent time together."
Normal Break-In vs Wrong Mattress
This is the critical distinction. Normal break-in discomfort improves week over week. A wrong mattress match gets worse or stays the same.
Normal Break-In Signs
- General feeling of "different" without sharp pain
- Mild morning stiffness that improves within 30 minutes of waking
- Slight difficulty finding your usual sleep position initially
- Gradual improvement over 2-4 weeks
- Better sleep by week 3-4 compared to week 1
Warning Signs of a Wrong Match
- Sharp pain in specific areas (lower back, hips, shoulders)
- Numbness or tingling in arms or legs
- Pain that worsens over the first 2-3 weeks instead of improving
- Consistently poor sleep quality after 30+ nights
- Waking multiple times per night that you did not experience on your old mattress
If these symptoms persist after 30 days, the mattress firmness or support type is likely wrong for your body. Come see us. We can help identify the mismatch.
Why In-Store Testing Reduces Break-In Surprises
This is one of the biggest advantages of buying from a store rather than online. When you test a mattress at our Brantford showroom for 10-15 minutes in your natural sleep position, you get a baseline feel that your body can then adjust to. Online purchases are a guess. Customers who test in store report significantly smoother break-in periods because they already know roughly what to expect.

Is it normal for a new mattress to feel too firm?
Yes. Almost every new mattress feels firmer than it will after break-in. The comfort layers have not been compressed yet. Give it 30 days of nightly use before judging the firmness. If it still feels too firm after a month, a mattress topper can add softness.
How long does a memory foam mattress take to break in?
Typically 30-60 days. Dense memory foam takes longer than lighter foams. Room temperature affects the timeline, as cooler rooms slow the softening process. Sleep on it nightly and keep your bedroom at 19-21C for the fastest break-in.
Should I return a mattress that is uncomfortable after two weeks?
Two weeks is usually too soon to judge. Most mattresses need 30 days minimum. The exception is if you experience sharp pain, numbness, or worsening symptoms. Those are signs of a wrong match, not a break-in issue. If you bought from us, come in and talk to Dorothy or Talia. We can help distinguish break-in from mismatch.
Does jumping on a mattress help break it in?
No. Jumping creates concentrated force that can damage coils and foam layers. Walking gently across the mattress in socks is the safest way to accelerate break-in. Normal nightly use is the most effective method.
Will a mattress get softer over time?
Yes, all mattresses soften with use. The break-in period covers the initial softening. After that, mattresses continue to soften gradually over their lifespan. This is why quality construction matters. A well-made Restonic mattress maintains its support core even as the comfort layer softens, so it ages gracefully rather than sagging.
