You have done the research. You have tested mattresses in person. You have picked the right firmness. And then someone asks: what are you going to do with the old one?

It is a surprisingly difficult question. A queen mattress weighs between 27 and 41 kilograms. It does not fold. It barely fits through most doorways without bending, and bending it risks snapping the internal coil structure. Getting one down a flight of stairs is a two-person job at minimum, and getting it to a disposal site means you need a truck or an SUV with the seats folded down.

Every Disposal Option in Brantford, Compared

Each option has trade-offs worth considering.

City of Brantford Bulk Pickup

Brantford residents can schedule a free bulk item pickup through the City by visiting bulkpickup.brantford.ca or calling 519-759-4150. You need to book at least seven days in advance. The mattress goes to the curb on your scheduled day, and the waste collection crew picks it up.

The limitation is timing. You book the pickup, wait a week or more, then put the mattress out the night before. That means either sleeping on the old mattress until pickup day and then going without for a stretch, or having the old mattress propped against a wall for a week while you sleep on the new one. Neither scenario is great.

Private Junk Removal

Companies like 1-800-GOT-JUNK operate in the Brantford area and will come to your home, carry the mattress out, and haul it away. It is convenient, but the cost typically runs $80 to $150 or more depending on the company and whether you are disposing of additional items. Some of these services recycle a portion of what they collect, though the percentage varies.

Donation

This sounds appealing but comes with caveats. Most charities and shelters will not accept mattresses due to hygiene regulations and bed bug concerns. The Brant County SPCA and Habitat for Humanity ReStore have specific condition requirements. A mattress with any staining, odour, or structural damage will be refused. If your mattress is in genuinely good shape and under 8-10 years old, donation is a responsible option, but it requires you to transport it yourself in most cases.

The Overlap Problem

The real inconvenience with most disposal methods is the gap between getting the new mattress and getting rid of the old one. If your new mattress arrives Tuesday and the city pickup is not until the following Thursday, you have a queen mattress leaning against a wall in your hallway for nine days. In a Brantford bungalow or a downtown apartment on Dalhousie Street, that is not a minor annoyance.

Step 3: Old mattress comes out first. The team removes the old mattress (and box spring, if you are replacing both) before bringing the new one in. This keeps hallways and bedrooms clear and avoids the awkward situation of having two mattresses in one room.

Step 4: New mattress goes in. The new mattress is carried to the bedroom, placed on your bed frame or foundation, and positioned where you want it. If you purchased a new box spring or foundation, that goes in as well. Basic bed frame assembly is included if needed.

Step 5: Old mattress goes on the truck. Your old mattress is loaded onto the delivery vehicle. All packaging materials from the new mattress are also removed, so you are not left with plastic wrap and cardboard to deal with.

Step 6: You are done. The entire process typically takes 20 to 30 minutes from arrival to departure. You go from sleeping on the old mattress one night to sleeping on the new one the next, with zero overlap and zero gap.

Where Old Mattresses Go After Pickup

This is a fair question, and one that more customers are asking. Simply moving the mattress from your home to a different location does not solve the environmental problem if it still ends up in a landfill.

Ontario does not yet have a fully operational extended producer responsibility (EPR) program specifically for mattresses, though mattresses are among the materials being considered for future designation under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016. What this means in practice is that mattress recycling in Ontario happens through a mix of private facilities and municipal programs rather than a single regulated system.

Recyc-Matelas, Canada's only dedicated mattress recycling company, operates a facility in the Toronto area and processes approximately 400,000 mattresses per year across Ontario and Quebec (Recyc-Matelas, 2024). When a mattress is properly disassembled for recycling, the components separate into distinct streams:

• Steel springs go to metal recyclers and get melted down for new steel products
• Polyurethane foam can be shredded for carpet underlay, insulation, or industrial padding
• Cotton and wool fibres get processed for industrial wiping cloths or insulation
• Wood from box springs goes to biomass energy or mulch
• Fabric covers are the most difficult component, but some facilities process them into industrial felt

We work to divert old mattresses from landfill wherever recycling pathways are available. We are honest that we cannot guarantee 100% recycling for every mattress collected, because the infrastructure in Ontario is still developing. But it is something we take seriously, and the industry is moving in the right direction.

What We Can and Cannot Remove

Our removal service is straightforward, but there are a few boundaries worth knowing about ahead of time.

What We Remove

• Your old mattress (any size, any brand, any condition)
• Your old box spring or foundation, if you are replacing it
• All packaging from the new mattress (plastic, cardboard, corner guards)

What We Do Not Remove

• Bed frames (we do not take away old bed frames as part of standard delivery)
• Other furniture (dressers, nightstands, headboards)
• Multiple mattresses beyond what you are replacing (if you buy one queen mattress, we remove one old mattress, not three)

One thing to note: we remove old mattresses with purchase only. We do not offer standalone mattress pickup without a new purchase. If you need to dispose of a mattress without buying a replacement, the City of Brantford's free bulk pickup is the most cost-effective route.

Condition Does Not Matter

Your old mattress does not need to be in any particular condition for us to remove it. Stained, sagging, 20 years old, spring poking through the cover: it does not matter. We have removed mattresses that were well past their useful life and mattresses that looked almost new but had simply lost their support. The average mattress lifespan is 7 to 10 years depending on materials and use, but many people hold onto theirs far longer.

Timing Your Replacement Right

Since old mattress removal happens during delivery, the timing is less about logistics and more about recognizing when your current mattress has reached the end of its useful life.

Signs Your Mattress Needs Replacing

The Sleep Foundation and Canadian Chiropractic Association both note that visible sagging of more than 3-4 centimetres, persistent morning stiffness that improves as the day goes on, and waking with new aches that were not present six months ago are reliable indicators (Jacobson et al., 2008; Canadian Chiropractic Association, 2023). A mattress that has lost its support does not suddenly fail. It degrades gradually, which makes it easy to adjust to poor sleep without realising it.

Brad has a useful rule of thumb from 37 years in the business: if you sleep better in hotels than you do at home, your mattress is likely the problem, not the pillow or the room temperature.

Common Situations We See

After nearly four decades in Brantford, certain patterns come up regularly.

Seniors downsizing. A couple moving from a house to a condo or retirement community and replacing a king with a queen. We remove the old king and deliver the new queen. A Note About Online Mattress Returns

If you purchased a bed-in-a-box mattress online and are within the trial period, the online retailer typically handles removal through their own return process. Some send a courier, some ask you to donate it locally, and some simply tell you to dispose of it yourself.

If you are past the trial period on an online mattress and ready to upgrade, our removal service works the same as any other replacement. Buy a new mattress from us, schedule white glove delivery, and we take the old one regardless of brand or where you originally purchased it.

We are not going to pretend that online mattresses are always bad. Some people genuinely like theirs. But when customers come to us after an online purchase that did not work out, the most common complaint is that the mattress felt different after six months than it did in the first week. That is something you can better evaluate by testing in person at a showroom.
