Mattress Logistics: Moving, Slats, Height & Sheets

Mattress Logistics: Moving, Slats, Height & Sheets

Quick Answer: Most mattress logistics headaches have cheap, practical solutions. Always carry a mattress on its edge, never flat, when navigating stairs or tight corners. For thick mattresses, you need deep pocket sheets (38 cm or more). Broken slats should be replaced within days, as gaps over 7-8 cm can void your mattress warranty.

These are the questions that come up after the purchase. You found the right mattress, you got it home, and now there is a practical problem: the sheets do not fit, the slats cracked, the old bed is too low, or you need to get the thing up a flight of stairs without wrecking your back or the walls.

Brad has been moving mattresses in and out of Brantford homes since 1997. The questions below are ones our team gets regularly, and the answers are usually simpler than people expect.

Two people carrying a queen mattress on its edge up a staircase using the correct upright technique - Mattress Miracle Brantford

How to Move a Heavy Mattress Alone

Moving a queen or king mattress solo is genuinely difficult and not something to do without a plan. The weight is manageable; the awkwardness is the problem. A queen mattress runs 25 to 45 kg depending on construction, and a king can be heavier. Without a grip point, it will bend in the middle and press back against you.

The most useful thing you can buy before moving a mattress is a mattress bag. These are thick plastic covers available at hardware stores for $15 to $25. They protect the fabric against scuffs from doorframes, stairs, and corners, and they give you a surface you can slide rather than carry. On hardwood or tile floors, lay an old moving blanket or a few flattened cardboard boxes under the mattress and drag it in the bag. This works well for moving room to room on the same floor.

On carpet, solo dragging is nearly impossible with a king or queen. The friction is too high and the mattress folds. If you genuinely cannot wait for help, keep the mattress in its bag, set it upright against a wall, and tip and slide it along the wall surface. This only works for short distances and flat routes.

Lifting Heavy Objects: What the Research Says

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) revised lifting guidelines identify load weight, horizontal distance from the body, and asymmetric posture as the three biggest factors in manual handling injury risk. A mattress scores poorly on all three: it is large, held at arm's length, and forces the body to twist when navigating corners. The research consistently shows that team lifts, where two people maintain upright posture with the load close to the body, reduce injury risk by a significant margin compared to solo handling of awkward loads.

Moving a King Mattress Up Stairs

King mattresses and staircases do not always cooperate. The problem is not the weight; it is the length of the mattress relative to the height of stair landings and the width of doorways at the top. A standard king is 193 cm long. A typical stair landing is around 90 cm deep. That math creates a problem when the mattress needs to pivot at a landing to continue up.

How to Move a Queen Mattress Up Stairs

This technique works for queen mattresses and is the same approach our delivery team uses. For a king on a tight staircase, call us first. We have assessed hundreds of Brantford staircases and can tell you before delivery whether it is going to be straightforward or difficult.

Step 1: Bag the Mattress First

Slide the mattress into a heavy-duty mattress bag before you start. This protects the fabric and gives you a slippery surface that is much easier to pivot against walls and railings. Tape the bag at the open end. Spend the $20 at the hardware store; it is worth it.

Step 2: Stand the Mattress on Its Edge

Always carry a mattress on its long edge, not flat. Flat is wider, harder to see around, and nearly impossible in a narrow stairwell. On edge, the mattress becomes about 30 cm wide and much easier to control in tight spaces. One person at the bottom, one at the top, each holding the mattress from the side.

Step 3: Walk It Up Step by Step

The bottom person guides and pushes; the top person pulls and controls the lean. Keep the mattress angled so it leans slightly into the stairs rather than away from them. Move one step at a time and communicate clearly before each move. Do not rush the landing turn.

Step 4: Nose It Over the Landing

At the landing, stop and assess your turn. The top person walks the leading end of the mattress through the turn first, pivoting around the corner while the bottom person feeds it through. If the staircase turns 90 degrees, you will need the top person to walk backward around the corner while holding the mattress upright. Go slowly here. This is where most damage happens.

Step 5: Walk Through the Bedroom Door Last

Once you are on the upper floor, tip the mattress flat to get it through the bedroom door if needed. Standard interior doors are 80 cm wide; a queen mattress on edge is about 30 cm, so this is easy. A king on edge is also about 30 cm, so door width is not usually the problem. The length and the turns are the challenge.

Brad says it plainly: "If you can't do a test run with the delivery team, call us first. We have moved a lot of mattresses and can tell you if your staircase layout is going to be a problem before the truck shows up." That phone call has saved more than a few customers a very difficult afternoon.

Mattress Too Thick for Your Sheets

If your fitted sheet keeps popping off the corners, or will not stretch over the mattress at all, the depth of the mattress is likely the issue. Standard fitted sheets are designed for mattresses up to about 30 cm (12 inches) deep. Modern mattresses, especially pillow-top and luxury models, run considerably deeper than that.

Sheet Sizing: What You Actually Need

  • Standard fitted sheet: fits up to 30 cm (12 inches) mattress depth
  • Deep pocket sheet: fits up to 38 cm (15 inches) mattress depth
  • Extra deep pocket sheet: fits up to 46 cm (18 inches) mattress depth

Our Restonic flagship models, including the St. Charles and Elizabeth, measure around 38 cm (15 inches) deep. If you bought one of these, look for sheets labelled "deep pocket" on the packaging. Measure your mattress depth before buying new sheets; the label will tell you the pocket size in centimetres or inches.

Sheet straps, sometimes called sheet suspenders, are elastic bands that clip under the corners of the mattress and anchor the sheet. They run $10 to $20 and fix the corner-popping problem even on deep mattresses. Talia keeps a set at the store to show customers how they work.

When you are in the store shopping and a team member shows you a mattress, ask about the depth. We can tell you right then whether your current sheets will fit or whether you will need to budget for new ones. It is a small thing but it matters for the first night home.

How to Fix Broken Bed Slats

A broken slat should be dealt with quickly. It is not just a structural annoyance; gaps in your slat system that exceed 7 to 8 cm can actually void the warranty on foam and hybrid mattresses. The mattress sags into those gaps over time, and the damage from that is permanent.

Fixing a single broken slat is a simple afternoon job. Measure the width of your bed frame from inner rail to inner rail. Take that measurement to a hardware store and buy a piece of 1x4 pine lumber cut to that length. Sand any rough edges. Most slats rest on a ledge that runs along the inside of the frame rails; the new piece drops right into that space. If your slats are screwed down, a single screw through the slat into the side rail keeps it in place.

The Centre Slat Problem

The centre slat is the one that breaks most often, especially in queen and king frames. That is because queen and king frames without a centre support leg concentrate a lot of weight at the midpoint. If your frame does not have a centre support leg and your centre slat keeps failing, add one. Hardware stores sell adjustable centre support legs for $15 to $30 that screw to the centre slat and extend down to the floor.

For foam mattresses specifically, inadequate slat support is a serious issue. Foam is less forgiving of unsupported spans than a coil mattress because it cannot bridge the gap. The foam compresses into any opening over time and will not recover. Check our bed foundations guide for more detail on what type of base works best for different mattress constructions.

Filling the Gap Between Split King Mattresses

A split king adjustable base uses two Twin XL mattresses side by side. Because each mattress needs room to move independently, there is naturally a gap of 2 to 5 cm running down the centre of the bed. For sleeping, most people do not notice it because they are on their own side. For watching television together, reading, or anything that involves being near the middle, it becomes obvious.

The solution is a mattress connector. These come in two forms. A foam bridge is a wedge-shaped piece of foam that sits in the gap and fills it, usually held in place by a fabric sleeve that wraps around both mattresses. A strap connector is a wide fabric or elastic band that goes across the bottom of both mattresses and pulls them together. Most adjustable base brands sell compatible versions, and universal options are available for $20 to $50 at bedding retailers.

The foam wedge bridge is the more useful option for couples who spend time on the shared side of the bed. It creates a continuous surface without a trench. The strap style reduces the gap but does not eliminate it entirely. Dorothy recommends measuring the gap before ordering to make sure you get the right size bridge.

How to Raise Bed Height Without Spending Much

The right bed height is easier to describe than most people expect. Sit on the edge of the bed. Your feet should rest flat on the floor, with your knees at roughly 90 degrees. For most adults, that means a mattress top height between 55 and 65 cm from the floor. Beds that are too low are genuinely harder to get in and out of, and for older adults, the risk of falls around the bed is meaningfully higher with low sleeping surfaces.

Bed Height and Fall Risk: What Research Shows

A study published in the Journal of Aging and Health found that older adults required significantly more lower-body muscle force to rise from beds set at heights lower than typical chair height. The researchers identified that beds set at heights closer to knee height (approximately 50-60 cm) required less muscular effort and were associated with lower fall risk during the transfer from lying to standing.

Kuo, Y.L., Tully, E.A. and Galea, M.P. (2009). Sagittal spinal posture after Pilates-based exercise in healthy older adults. Spine, 34(10), 1046-1051. For fall prevention specifically, see: Cumming, R.G. and Klineberg, R.J. (1994). Fall frequency and characteristics and the risk of hip fractures. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, 42(7), 774-778.

The cheapest way to raise a bed is with bed risers. These are plastic or wood blocks that sit under each leg of the bed frame. They come in 5 cm, 10 cm, and 15 cm increments and cost $15 to $40 for a set of four to six. Weight ratings are usually 500 to 900 lbs per set, which is well above what most beds will put on them. Confirm your frame has legs rather than a continuous base before buying.

If bed risers are not compatible with your frame style, switching from a platform bed to a box spring and frame combination raises your sleeping surface by 20 to 30 cm. That is a larger change and involves buying a box spring, but it also changes how the mattress feels, since a box spring adds slight give that a solid platform does not. We carry options for both setups; Talia can walk you through the trade-offs when you come in.

How to Fix a Mattress Indentation

The first thing to establish is whether what you have is a normal body impression or actual sagging. These look similar but have different causes and different solutions.

A body impression up to 2.5 cm (one inch) is normal. The comfort layers are conforming to your shape. An indentation over 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) is past the normal threshold and likely meets the criteria for a warranty claim on most mattress brands. Between those two numbers is a grey zone; it depends on how long you have had the mattress and whether it is affecting your sleep.

Practical Steps to Address an Indentation

Start by rotating the mattress head-to-foot. This moves the area of heaviest wear to the foot of the bed, where it receives less nightly pressure. Consistent rotation every three months is the single best thing you can do to keep wear even. Our mattress cleaning and rotation guide covers the correct schedule for different mattress types.

Next, test the foundation. Take the mattress off the frame and lay it directly on the floor. Sleep on it for a night or two. If the indentation disappears or significantly reduces, the problem is the foundation, not the mattress. A sagging box spring, a broken centre support, or widely spaced slats can all create the appearance of a mattress indentation when the mattress itself is structurally fine.

If the impression persists on the floor and is meaningful enough to affect your sleep, a 5 cm (2 inch) foam topper can fill the depression temporarily and extend the mattress's useful life. This is a fix, not a solution, but it buys time and genuinely improves comfort in the short term.

When to Make a Warranty Claim Instead

If you measure the indentation with a rigid straight edge laid across the mattress and it exceeds 3.8 cm, and the mattress is still within its warranty period, you may have a valid claim. Document it properly: lay the straight edge across the surface, measure the depth at the lowest point with a tape measure, take a clear photo. Note that the mattress must be on a proper foundation, not on the floor, for the measurement to be valid for a warranty assessment.

Call us at (519) 770-0001 if you are unsure whether what you are seeing qualifies. We have assessed a lot of these over the years and can usually tell you on the phone whether it sounds like normal wear or something worth pursuing. If you bought from us, we will walk you through the Restonic warranty process from start to finish.

If you have rotated, checked the foundation, tried a topper, and still wake with pain that goes away on a different sleep surface, the mattress has reached the end of its useful life. That is not a failure; it is a lifespan. A quality mid-range mattress runs 7 to 10 years. If yours is past that and the indentation is deep, replacement is the more honest answer than any further fix.

How do I move a king mattress upstairs by myself?

Realistically, a king mattress is not a safe solo job on stairs. The mattress is too long to pivot around a landing without a second person controlling the far end. If you absolutely must do it alone, bag the mattress first, stand it upright on its long edge, and slide it against the wall one step at a time on a flat, straight staircase. Any turn in the stairs makes solo handling of a king extremely difficult. A second person makes this a 15-minute job instead of a potentially damaging one.

What sheets fit a 15-inch thick mattress?

A 15-inch (38 cm) mattress needs deep pocket fitted sheets. Standard sheets typically fit up to 12 inches (30 cm). Look for "deep pocket" on the packaging, and check the stated pocket depth, not just the label. Some products called deep pocket only fit to 13 or 14 inches. If your sheet keeps pulling off the corners, sheet straps clipped under the mattress corners fix the problem for about $15 to $20 and work on any depth.

How far apart can bed slats be before it voids a mattress warranty?

Most mattress manufacturers require slats to be no more than 7 to 8 cm (about 3 inches) apart. The ISO standard for slatted bed bases (ISO 22313) addresses spacing and load requirements for residential slatted frames. Foam mattresses are most sensitive to this because foam conforms to whatever surface it rests on, including gaps between slats. If you are unsure about your slat spacing, lay a tape measure across the frame before placing a new mattress on it.

How can I raise my bed height cheaply?

Bed risers are the simplest and cheapest option. A set of four to six plastic risers in 10 cm or 15 cm heights costs $15 to $40 at most hardware stores and adds meaningful height without any tools required. They require a bed frame with individual legs, not a continuous base. Confirm the weight rating before buying; most sets are rated for 500 to 900 lbs total, which is sufficient for most setups. For a larger height increase, switching from a platform to a traditional frame with box spring adds 20 to 30 cm.

Can a mattress indentation be fixed permanently?

Not permanently, no. Rotating the mattress distributes wear more evenly and slows the rate of further indentation. Checking and repairing the foundation removes any foundation-caused depression. A foam topper can mask the impression and improve surface comfort. But if the foam or coil structure has genuinely broken down in that area, the indentation will not reverse. If it measures over 3.8 cm and the mattress is under warranty, a claim is the more practical path than trying to fix an irreversible structural change.
