Quick Answer: Unlike most medications, melatonin dosage is NOT based on body weight. A 250lb man needs the same dose (0.3mg to 1mg) as a 120lb woman because the hormone acts on specific brain receptors, not body mass. Taking more because you weigh more only increases the risk of side effects like nightmares and grogginess.

If you give Tylenol to a child, you measure it by their weight. If you get anesthesia, the doctor calculates it by your weight. We are trained to believe that Bigger Body = Bigger Dose.
So when customers come into our Brantford store and say, "I'm a big guy, I need the 10mg melatonin," it makes perfect sense to them.
But melatonin is weird. It breaks the rules of pharmacology. Understanding why can save you from a lot of groggy mornings.
Why We Think Weight Matters
Most drugs work by dissolving into your blood and tissues. If you have more blood and tissue (more weight), the drug gets diluted, so you need more of it to reach the effective concentration.
Melatonin isn't a drug. It is a hormone signal.
Brain Receptors vs. Body Mass
Melatonin's job is to flip a switch in your brain (the suprachiasmatic nucleus). That switch is the same size in a linebacker as it is in a gymnast.
The "Doorbell" Analogy
Think of melatonin as a finger pressing a doorbell. It doesn't matter how big the house is (your body). It doesn't matter how big the person pressing the button is. You just need enough pressure to ring the bell. Smashing the doorbell with a sledgehammer (taking 10mg) doesn't make the bell ring louder; it just breaks the doorbell.

The Universal "Sweet Spot"
MIT research established decades ago that 0.3mg is the physiological dose for adult humans. This amount mimics the natural spike in your blood at night.
Taking more than this doesn't help you sleep better. It causes "receptor saturation." Once the switch is flipped, extra melatonin just floats around in your blood, waiting to be cleaned out by your liver. This "spillover" is what causes the next-day hangover.
So, whether you weigh 100lbs or 300lbs, start with 0.5mg to 1mg.
When Does Size Matter?
There is one exception: Body Fat.
Melatonin is lipid-soluble (it dissolves in fat). If you have a high percentage of body fat, your body might "store" some of the melatonin you take, releasing it slowly back into your bloodstream later.
This means that for overweight individuals, taking a high dose (10mg) is actually worse because the "hangover" effect might last longer as the stored melatonin leaks out the next day.
The Mechanical Factor
If you are heavier, your sleep issues are more likely mechanical than hormonal. Heavier bodies compress mattresses deeper, hitting the hard support coils. This causes pressure points. If you can't sleep, don't up your dose - check your bed. A high-density foam or hybrid mattress supports heavier weights without the pain that wakes you up.

Call 519-770-0001Why do they sell 10mg pills then?
Marketing. Since they can't patent the hormone, companies compete on "strength." Consumers assume "Extra Strength" means better value. It actually just means "Extra Side Effects."
Is it safe for children by weight?
No. Children should generally not take melatonin regardless of weight, because their hormonal systems are developing. Always consult a pediatrician.
Does metabolism speed matter more than weight?
Yes. Age affects metabolism more than weight. An elderly person metabolizes drugs slowly, so they need an even smaller dose (0.3mg) than a young adult to avoid dizziness.
Can I overdose?
It is hard to die from melatonin, but you can "overdose" in the sense of making yourself sick (nausea, headache, nightmares). This happens regardless of your body weight.
