How Melatonin Works

Your pineal gland starts producing melatonin about 2 hours before your natural bedtime, triggered by decreasing light. This dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) is your body internal signal that sleep is approaching. Melatonin does not knock you out like a sleeping pill. Instead, it tells your brain "it is time for sleep," reducing alertness and lowering core body temperature to prepare for sleep.
Supplemental melatonin works the same way but from an external source. Think of it as a timing signal, not a sedative.
Canadian Research on Melatonin
A meta-analysis in the journal Sleep Medicine reviewed 19 studies and found that melatonin reduced sleep onset latency (time to fall asleep) by an average of 7 minutes and increased total sleep time by 8 minutes. While these numbers seem modest, melatonin most significant effect is on circadian timing rather than sleep quantity. Health Canada classifies melatonin as a natural health product (NPN required) rather than a drug, reflecting its relatively safe profile.
When Melatonin Actually Helps
Melatonin is most effective for:
- Jet lag: Taking melatonin at the new bedtime helps reset your clock. Most effective for eastward travel crossing 3+ time zones
- Delayed sleep phase: If your natural sleep time is very late (2-4 AM), melatonin taken 3-5 hours before your desired bedtime can gradually shift your clock earlier
- Shift work: Helps daytime sleepers signal "bedtime" to their brains despite daylight
-
Age-related decline: Melatonin production decrea
ses with age. Older adults with documented low melatonin may benefit from small supplemental doses
Melatonin is less effective for general insomnia caused by stress, anxiety, pain, or poor sleep habits. In these cases, addressing the root cause is more important.
Dosage and Timing
This is where most people go wrong. The shelves at Canadian pharmacies are filled with 5 mg and 10 mg melatonin tablets, but research consistently shows that lower doses (0.5-3 mg) are equally or more effective. High doses can cause morning grogginess, vivid dreams, and may actually disrupt your circadian rhythm by flooding receptors.
Melatonin Dosage Guide
For jet lag: 0.5-3 mg at the target bedtime, starting the night of arrival. Use for 3-5 days.
For delayed sleep phase: 0.5-1 mg taken 3-5 hours before your desired bedtime (not at bedtime).
For general sleep onset: 0.5-3 mg taken 30-60 minutes before bed.
For shift workers: 1-3 mg before your daytime sleep period, combined with blackout curtains.
Start low: Begin with 0.5 mg and increase only if needed. Many Canadians take far too much.
Safety and Side Effects
Melatonin is generally safe for short-term use (up to 3 months). Common side effects include morning drowsiness, vivid dreams, mild headache, and dizziness. It can interact with blood thinners, diabetes medications, immunosuppressants, and birth control pills. Talk to your pharmacist before combining with other medications.
Long-term safety data is limited. The concern is not toxicity but rather dependence on an external signal rather than addressing underlying sleep issues. We think of melatonin as a useful short-term tool, not a permanent solution.
A Mattress Store Perspective on Supplements
We sell mattresses, not supplements, so we have no financial incentive to push melatonin one way or the other. W
hat we see at Mattress Miracle is that many Brantford customers take melatonin nightly while sleeping on a mattress that is past its lifespan. Addressing physical comfort often reduces the need for sleep aids. We always suggest looking at the full picture: habits, environment, and sleep surface.
Medical disclaimer: Consult your healthcare provider before taking melatonin, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medications, or managing a health condition. This is informational content, not medical advice.

Is melatonin addictive?
Melatonin is not physically addictive and does not cause withdrawal symptoms. However, people can become psychologically dependent on it as a sleep crutch. Your body does not stop producing its own melatonin when you take supplements.
Can I give melatonin to my child?
Melatonin is used for children with sleep difficulties, especially those with ADHD or autism spectrum disorder. However, always consult your pediatrician first. The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends behavioural sleep interventions before supplements.
Why does 10 mg melatonin make me groggy?
Your body needs only a tiny amount of melatonin to signal sleep. High doses flood melatonin receptors, causing prolonged drowsiness. The melatonin half-life is about 40 minutes, but large doses take much longer to clear. Try 0.5-1 mg instead.
Is melatonin safe every night?
Short-term nightly use (up to 3 months) appears safe for most adults. Long-term nightly use lacks robust safety data. If you need melatonin every night for months, the underlying cause of your sleep difficulty should be investigated.
Does melatonin work immediately?
Melatonin takes 20-60 minutes to take effect. It does not work like a sleeping pill that knocks you out. For circadian rhythm shifting, the full effect may take several days of consistent use.
