Moving Truck and Mattress Protection

A mattress in a moving truck is exposed to conditions that can cause significant damage: compression from other items stacked on top, moisture if the truck is not climate-controlled, and dirt and scuffing if the mattress is not properly protected. Most mattresses that arrive at a new home in poor condition were damaged in the moving truck because they were not properly wrapped.

If you are moving a mattress that is worth keeping, the minimum protection required is a full mattress bag (available at any moving supply retailer) sealed with packing tape. The bag protects against moisture, dirt, and surface scuffing. It does not protect against compression damage from heavy items being stacked on top of the mattress.

In a standard moving truck load, the mattress should go last (against the truck wall) or stand on its side along the wall of the truck, not flat under other items. A queen or king mattress lying flat under boxes will sustain core compression that permanently damages the mattress structure, particularly in foam-topped designs. Pocketed coil mattresses are more resilient to this kind of incidental compression than all-foam alternatives, which is one practical reason why foam mattresses sometimes do not survive a move as well as coil-based ones.

Mattresses in Storage Units

Storing a mattress in a storage unit creates several risks that most people do not fully consider before making the decision:

• Moisture and mould: Non-climate-controlled storage units in Canada can experience significant temperature and humidity swings, particularly through the spring thaw and summer humidity cycles. A mattress stored in these conditions without a sealed mattress bag can absorb moisture and develop mould within weeks. Once mould is established in a mattress, it cannot be effectively remediated , the mattress must be replaced.
• Compression damage: A mattress stored on its side for an extended period can develop permanent distortion in the support layer. Most manufacturers recommend storing mattresses flat if they must be stored at all, which most residential storage units do not accommodate practically.
• Pest risk: An unprotected mattress in a storage unit can harbour insects (particularly bed bugs) from adjacent units. Once a mattress has been exposed to pest contamination, it is not safe to return to use without professional treatment.

The practical recommendation for most Canadians: if you are putting a mattress into storage for more than three months, seriously evaluate whether the cost of storage plus the risk of damage is worth more than the value of replacing the mattress when you need it again. For a mattress that is already five or more years old, replacement at the end of the storage period is almost always the right economic decision.

PODS and Portable Storage Containers

Portable moving and storage containers (commonly known by the brand name PODS, though multiple companies offer the service) are increasingly used by Canadians who need to store belongings between home sale and purchase, or who are doing a staged move. Mattresses in PODS containers face the same risks as mattresses in moving trucks and storage units, with the additional consideration that containers often sit outside in Canadian weather during transitions.

Key precautions for a mattress in a portable container:

• Use a quality sealed mattress bag, not a loose cover.
• Elevate the mattress off the container floor on a pallet or boards to prevent floor moisture wicking.
• Position the mattress last, against the container wall, standing on its side for transport; lay flat if the container is stationary for more than a few days.
• Do not store other items on top of the mattress during transport.

If the portable container period is expected to exceed two to three months, the damage risk calculation is similar to self-storage: replacement may be more economical than the storage protection costs plus the risk.

Being Between Homes in Ontario

Ontarians who are in transition between home sale and purchase often face a gap period during which they are staying with family, in temporary rental accommodation, or in a furnished short-term suite. The mattress situation during this period varies:

• Temporary accommodation: If you are in furnished accommodation between homes, you are living with someone else's mattress for weeks or months. • 5 to 8 years old: Evaluate honestly. Does it still feel supportive? Has it developed any sagging or indentations? A move is the natural moment to notice these issues because you will be sleeping without it for a day or two. If the honest answer is "it is fine but not great," a new home is the ideal moment to upgrade.
• 8 years or older: Replace. The moving cost plus the continued sleep quality cost of an old mattress almost always exceeds the cost of a new mattress on which you start fresh in your new home. This is particularly true if the mattress will need to go into storage before the new home is ready.

Kovacs et al. (2003) in The Lancet established that mattress quality has a clinically significant effect on back pain and sleep quality.^[1] Jacobson et al. (2008) in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine found that replacing an inadequate mattress produced measurable improvements in sleep quality and physical discomfort within 28 days.^[2] A new home is the natural moment to make this change.
