Every summer, a customer walks into our Brantford showroom and says something like: "I just got back from camping and I slept terribly for two nights, but on the third night I had the best sleep of my life." This happens so often that we started paying attention to why.
Camping strips away everything artificial about your sleep environment. No thermostat. No blackout curtains. No memory foam. Just you, a sleeping bag, and whatever the weather decides to do at 3 a.m. in July. And somehow, for a lot of people, that eventually leads to remarkable sleep.
The word "eventually" is doing important work in that sentence. Because the first night in a tent is almost always rough, and the science explains exactly why.
Your Brain on Camping: The First-Night Effect
In 2016, researchers at Brown University published a finding in Current Biology that explained something campers have known intuitively for years: your first night in a new place is never as good as the second.
The study, led by Masako Tamaki and Yuka Sasaki, used advanced neuroimaging on 35 volunteers sleeping in an unfamiliar lab environment. They found that during deep slow-wave sleep on the first night, the left brain hemisphere remained significantly more active than the right. Essentially, half your brain is standing guard.
The Sentinel Hypothesis
When the researchers played irregular beeping sounds through the right ear (stimulating the more vigilant left hemisphere), sleepers woke up faster and responded more quickly than when sounds were played through the left ear. The brain was literally running a night watch, keeping one hemisphere partially alert for unfamiliar signals.
This is an evolutionary survival mechanism. Dolphins and many bird species do this routinely, sleeping with one eye open. Humans appear to do it only on the first night in an unfamiliar place, then the effect diminishes as the environment becomes familiar.

For campers, this means your first night in a tent at Long Point or Turkey Point is almost always going to be lighter, more fragmented, and less restorative than subsequent nights. Your brain does not care that you paid for the campsite and set up your tent perfectly. It is scanning for bears, raccoons, and that weird rustling sound in the underbrush.
The practical lesson: if you can, book at least two nights. One-night camping trips give you the worst of tent sleeping (the first-night effect) without the payoff of the natural sleep benefits that kick in on night two and beyond.

The Temperature Problem Nobody Warns You About
Here is the thing about Ontario summer camping that catches people off guard: it is not the heat that wrecks your sleep. It is the temperature swing.
A July day at Long Point Provincial Park might hit 30°C by mid-afternoon. By 3 a.m., the same tent can drop to 12°C. That is an 18-degree swing, and your body has to thermoregulate through the entire range with nothing but a sleeping bag and whatever you are wearing.
Sleep research tells us why this matters so much.
Why Your Body Needs to Cool Down
A review published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Okamoto-Mizuno & Mizuno, 2012) found that ambient temperature is one of the most important factors affecting sleep quality. The optimal range for sleep is 15-20°C (60-68°F). Temperatures above 25°C significantly reduce slow-wave (deep) sleep and increase wakefulness.
Sleep onset is triggered partly by a drop in core body temperature of about 1-1.5°C. Your body achieves this through vasodilation, sending blood to your hands and feet to radiate heat outward. If the ambient temperature is too high, this cooling process stalls and you cannot fall asleep efficiently.

In a tent, you face a double problem. At bedtime (10 p.m. in July), the tent is likely still above 25°C because nylon and canvas trap daytime heat. Your body cannot initiate its cooling process efficiently, so sleep onset is delayed. Then, by 3 a.m., the tent has cooled rapidly, potentially below your sleeping bag's comfort rating, and you wake up shivering.
The solution is not a warmer sleeping bag or a cooler tent. It is managing the transition.
Practical Temperature Management for Ontario Camping
Before bed (9-10 p.m.): Open all tent vents and both doors if your site is screened from neighbours. Let the tent flush with evening air. Do not zip up early, "just in case." A stuffy tent at bedtime is worse than a slightly cool one at 3 a.m.
Your sleeping setup: Use a sleeping bag rated 5-10°C below the expected overnight low. In July, that means a bag rated to about 5°C even though the low might only be 12°C. This gives you room to unzip when it is warm and burrow in when the temperature drops.
Ground insulation: This is where most people fail. The ground conducts heat away from your body far more efficiently than air does. A closed-cell foam pad (R-value 2.0 or higher) under your sleeping pad makes a measurable difference to overnight warmth. Without it, the cold ground pulls heat from your core all night long, forcing your body to work harder to maintain temperature.
The 3 a.m. layer: Keep a fleece or merino wool mid-layer in your sleeping bag, not hanging on a hook across the tent. When you wake up cold at 3 a.m., you do not want to fully wake up searching for it.
The Campfire Advantage: Why Fire Is Better Than Your Living Room
Here is something that might surprise you: the light from a campfire is better for your sleep than the light in your living room.
This sounds counterintuitive, but the physics is straightforward. Campfire light is almost entirely in the amber and red wavelength range (590-700 nanometres). These long wavelengths have minimal impact on melatonin production. Your circadian system barely notices them.
Your living room, on the other hand, is full of blue-enriched LED light (450-495 nanometres). Even a "warm white" LED bulb emits significantly more blue-spectrum light than a campfire. And blue light is the wavelength that most powerfully suppresses melatonin and signals your brain to stay alert.
Firelight vs. Screen Light
Research published in Chronobiology International (West et al., 2011) measured melatonin suppression across different light wavelengths. They found that the human circadian system is sensitive to as little as 40 lux of short-wavelength (blue) light but shows no measurable melatonin suppression at the same intensity of long-wavelength (amber/red) light.
A typical campfire at sitting distance produces 50-100 lux of almost entirely long-wavelength light. Your phone screen at arm's length produces 40-80 lux with a heavy blue component. The campfire is objectively less disruptive to your melatonin production.

This is why experienced campers who sit around the fire talking until 10 p.m. and then go straight to their tent often fall asleep quickly, while people who retreat to their tent at 8 p.m. and watch Netflix on a tablet for two hours lie awake wondering why camping sleep is so bad.
The campfire is not just social. It is a sleep tool. Sit by it. Leave your phone in the car. Let the amber light do what it does, which is nothing at all to your melatonin.

If you are bringing kids and want the best chance of everyone sleeping, Turkey Point is the pick. The comfort stations mean nobody is stumbling to a pit toilet at 2 a.m. with a headlamp, and the beach exhaustion from a full day of swimming builds serious sleep pressure in children.
What to Bring for Better Tent Sleep
We are a mattress store, so we know something about sleep surfaces. A tent floor is about as far from an ideal sleep surface as you can get, but there are ways to close the gap.
The Camping Sleep Checklist
- Sleeping pad with R-value 2.0+ - This is your ground insulation. Without it, the ground conducts heat away from your body all night. Self-inflating pads with foam cores work well for car camping where weight is not an issue.
- A real pillow (not a stuff sack) - Neck support matters. A rolled-up jacket does not provide the cervical alignment your spine needs. We sell compact camping pillows at the store, and they are worth every dollar on night two when the novelty of roughing it has worn off.

Coming Home: Why Your First Night Back Matters
Here is the part nobody talks about. After two or three nights of camping, your circadian rhythm has shifted. You have been falling asleep earlier (no screens, campfire only), waking with the sun, and spending your days physically active outdoors. Your internal clock is more aligned with natural light cycles than it has been in months.
Then you come home, turn on every light in the house, open your laptop, and stay up until midnight. And just like that, the reset is gone.
Protecting Your Camping Reset
The night you come home from camping is the most important night for your long-term sleep. Here is how to keep the benefit:
Keep the early bedtime. If you were falling asleep at 9:30 p.m. at the campsite, try to stay within 30 minutes of that time on your first night home. Your circadian clock has shifted earlier, and maintaining that shift even partially carries forward the benefit.
Dim the lights. After three days of campfire-only evenings, your retinas are re-sensitized to light. The full blast of your kitchen ceiling lights will feel harsh and will aggressively suppress the melatonin your body has been producing so well at the campsite. Use lamps, not overheads.
Skip the screen catch-up. You will be tempted to check everything you missed, every email, every notification, every social media update. That blue light will undo three days of circadian progress in 45 minutes. It can wait until morning.
