Quick Answer: A plush mattress topper adds a soft, cushioned layer to your existing mattress, reducing pressure points without replacing the whole bed. Memory foam and down alternative toppers in the 2-to-3-inch range are the most popular choices. Prices typically run $80 to $300 depending on material and size. They work best on mattresses that are still structurally sound.

Reading Time: 12 minutes
Your mattress might be perfectly fine. The coils hold their shape. The edges don't dip. But every morning you wake up with sore shoulders or you toss and turn trying to get comfortable on a surface that feels like sleeping on a gymnasium floor. Sound familiar?
A plush mattress topper is often the most practical solution. It sits on top of your existing mattress, adds a layer of cushioning, and changes the feel of the bed without the cost of a full replacement. Done well, it can genuinely improve how you sleep. Done wrong, it's a lumpy, overheated mess that ends up in the linen closet by February.
This guide covers everything: materials, thickness, sleep position matching, when a topper actually helps, and when you really do need a new mattress instead. We'll also touch on what we typically see in our Brantford showroom at Mattress Miracle, where we've been helping families sleep better since 1997.
What Is a Plush Mattress Topper?
A mattress topper is a removable layer, usually 2 to 4 inches thick, that sits directly on top of your mattress and under your fitted sheet. A plush topper specifically refers to one with a soft, giving feel as opposed to a firm or medium support topper.
The term "plush" describes the comfort sensation rather than a single material. You can get a plush feel from memory foam, down, down alternative, latex, or even wool, depending on the density and construction. What they share is that yielding, pressure-relieving quality that lets your body sink in slightly rather than lying on a rigid surface.
Toppers are not the same as mattress pads. A mattress pad is thin (usually under an inch) and mainly adds a bit of protection and a soft surface texture. A plush topper has real loft and actually changes how your mattress feels. If you're looking for comfort improvement, you want a topper, not a pad.
Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "People come in and say their mattress is too firm, and the first question I always ask is: how old is it? If it's under eight years and still structurally sound, a good plush topper is often all they need. If the mattress is sagging, no topper in the world will fix that. You have to start with a solid foundation."
Toppers serve a few common purposes:
- Softening a mattress that's too firm for your sleep style or body type
- Adding a comfort layer to a guest bed that you don't use often enough to justify a full upgrade
- Extending the life of a mattress that's starting to feel less comfortable but hasn't structurally failed
- Customising one side of a shared bed when partners have different firmness preferences
They're not a permanent fix for a failing mattress, but in the right situation, a plush topper is a smart, cost-effective choice.
Topper Materials Compared
The material makes a bigger difference than almost any other variable. Here's an honest look at the main options.
Memory Foam
Memory foam toppers are the most popular choice and for good reason. The material contours to your body shape, distributing weight across a larger surface area and reducing pressure on hips, shoulders, and joints. It's particularly good for side sleepers.
The main drawback is heat retention. Traditional memory foam traps body heat, which can make warm sleepers uncomfortably hot. Gel-infused memory foam toppers address this partially, though they don't fully eliminate the issue. If you already sleep hot, a ventilated or gel memory foam topper is worth the small premium.
Density matters a lot here. Low-density memory foam (under 3 lb/ft3) feels very soft initially but compresses quickly and loses its shape within a year or two. Higher density foam (4 to 5 lb/ft3) is more durable and provides better pressure relief, though it's firmer initially and takes longer to break in.
Pressure Relief and Body Positioning
Research published in the Applied Nursing Research journal found that pressure redistribution surfaces significantly reduce tissue load at bony prominences. While this research focused on clinical pressure injury prevention, the underlying principle applies to sleep comfort: distributing body weight across a larger, yielding surface reduces concentrated pressure at the hips and shoulders. Memory foam's viscoelastic properties allow it to conform to body contours, which is why it's widely used for pressure relief in both clinical and consumer bedding contexts.
Down and Feather
Down toppers (filled with goose or duck down) are extraordinarily soft and have a fluffy, cloud-like feel that many sleepers love. They're breathable, which makes them a good choice for people who sleep hot. They also compress and pack easily for storage or travel.
The downsides: down toppers don't provide much structural support, so they don't do much for pressure relief at the hips and shoulders. They also shift and clump over time, can trigger allergies in some people, and require more careful washing. They're best for people who want a luxurious softness layer rather than targeted pressure relief.
Down Alternative
Down alternative toppers use synthetic fibres (usually polyester microfibre) to mimic the loft and softness of down without the allergen concern or the ethical considerations. They're machine washable, which is a genuine practical advantage, and they tend to cost less than real down.
Quality varies considerably. Cheap down alternative toppers flatten quickly. Look for a higher fill weight (measured in grams) and a tighter shell weave to keep the fill evenly distributed.
Wool
Wool toppers are genuinely underrated. Wool naturally regulates temperature, wicking moisture and adjusting to your body's heat rather than trapping it. This makes wool an excellent choice for people who sleep both hot in summer and cold in winter, which describes most of Ontario.
Wool also provides a gentle, springy softness rather than the sinking-in feel of foam. It's naturally resistant to dust mites and mould, which matters for people with allergies. The main barrier is price: quality wool toppers cost more than foam or down alternative equivalents.
Wool and Sleep Temperature Regulation
A 2016 study published in Nature and Science of Sleep compared wool and cotton bedding across different ambient temperatures and found that wool bedding supported sleep onset more consistently across a range of temperatures. Wool's hygroscopic properties (the ability to absorb and release moisture) play a role in buffering micro-climate changes around the body during sleep. For Ontario sleepers dealing with cold winters and humid summers, this thermoregulatory quality is a genuine benefit.
Latex
Natural latex toppers offer a unique combination: responsive cushioning that doesn't trap heat. Unlike memory foam, which contours slowly and holds its shape around your body, latex has a buoyant, springy feel. It pushes back. Some sleepers find this more comfortable, especially those who feel stuck in memory foam.
Latex is also highly durable. A quality natural latex topper can last 5 to 8 years, considerably longer than most foam alternatives. The trade-off is weight (latex is heavy) and cost (natural latex is more expensive than synthetic alternatives).
| Material | Feel | Heat Retention | Durability | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Memory Foam | Contouring, sinking | Moderate to high | 3-5 years | Side sleepers, pressure relief |
| Down | Fluffy, airy | Low | 3-5 years | Softness, breathability |
| Down Alternative | Soft, lofty | Low to moderate | 2-4 years | Allergy-friendly softness |
| Wool | Springy, gentle cushion | Very low | 5-7 years | Temperature regulation, all seasons |
| Natural Latex | Buoyant, responsive | Low | 5-8 years | Durability, pressure relief without heat |
Choosing the Right Thickness
Thickness is measured in inches and has a direct effect on how much the topper changes the feel of your bed. Thicker is not automatically better. The right thickness depends on your starting point (how firm your current mattress is) and what you're trying to achieve.
2-Inch Toppers
A 2-inch plush topper adds a noticeable layer of softness without dramatically altering the feel of the mattress underneath. This works well if your mattress is slightly too firm but otherwise comfortable. It's also the better choice if you're a stomach or back sleeper who needs pressure relief without compromising spinal alignment. A thicker topper can cause you to sink too deeply, arching your lower back.
3-Inch Toppers
The 3-inch topper is the sweet spot for most side sleepers and couples with firmness differences. It provides enough depth to cushion the hip and shoulder contact points without making the mattress feel unstable. Most memory foam toppers in this category are thick enough to provide meaningful contouring.
4-Inch Toppers
A 4-inch topper is for situations where the mattress underneath is very firm or you simply want a dramatically softer surface. The risk at this thickness is that you lose the structural support of the mattress below. If you have back issues or need spinal support, a 4-inch plush topper on a firm base may actually create alignment problems. Be cautious here.
A Simple Thickness Test
If you currently sleep on the mattress and wake up sore at the hips or shoulders, a 3-inch topper will likely make a real difference. If the mattress is just slightly firmer than you'd like but you sleep reasonably well, a 2-inch topper is often enough. When in doubt, start thinner. You can always add a mattress pad over the topper for extra softness, but you can't take away thickness once you've committed to it.
Matching a Topper to Your Sleep Position
Sleep position is one of the most important factors in choosing the right plush topper. What works well for a side sleeper can actively hurt a stomach sleeper's back.
Side Sleepers
Side sleepers typically need the most cushioning at pressure points. When you lie on your side, your hip and shoulder bear the bulk of your body weight against the mattress surface. A plush topper that allows these areas to sink in reduces concentrated pressure and helps keep your spine in a relatively neutral position.
Memory foam at 3 inches is a strong choice here. The contouring effect follows the curves of your body well. Down or down alternative at a high fill weight is also excellent for side sleepers who prefer a softer, less structured feel.
Back Sleepers
Back sleepers need a balance: softness at the shoulders and some relief at the lower back, but not so much give that the hips sink and the lumbar arch is lost. A 2-inch memory foam topper or a firm-feel latex topper (which is still softer than many mattress surfaces but more supportive than deep foam) tends to work well.
Dorothy, our sleep specialist, often recommends that back sleepers with lower back tension try a medium-plush topper before going all the way to ultra-soft. The goal is pressure relief without sacrificing the support that keeps the spine aligned.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers are the trickiest category. Sleeping on your stomach already puts the lumbar spine into hyperextension. A soft, sinking topper makes this worse by allowing the hips to drop further below the shoulders. If you sleep on your stomach, a plush topper is generally not recommended. If your mattress is uncomfortably firm and you're set on stomach sleeping, a very thin (1 to 2 inch) topper with some firmness to it is the safer choice.
Combination Sleepers
Combination sleepers (those who move between positions through the night) benefit from responsive materials that adjust quickly. Memory foam, particularly slow-recovery foam, can feel restrictive when you shift positions. Latex or high-quality down alternative tends to be more accommodating for combination sleepers.
Dorothy, Sleep Specialist: "We see a lot of couples where one person is a side sleeper and the other is a back sleeper. A 3-inch plush memory foam topper usually works for both. The side sleeper gets the pressure relief they need, and the back sleeper still has enough support because the mattress underneath is doing the structural work. The topper just takes the edge off."
When a Topper Is Enough vs. When You Need a New Mattress
This is the honest conversation that a lot of bedding articles skip. A plush mattress topper is a genuine solution in the right situation. In the wrong situation, it's a band-aid that delays an inevitable purchase and may actually make sleep worse.
A Topper Is a Good Solution When
- Your mattress is less than 8 years old and still holds its shape without visible sagging
- The mattress is too firm for your sleep style but is structurally sound
- You're furnishing a guest room that gets occasional use (upgrading the mattress itself isn't cost-effective)
- One partner needs a softer feel on their side of a shared mattress
- You're in a rental and can't replace the mattress
- Your budget right now doesn't allow for a new mattress but you need comfort relief
You Probably Need a New Mattress When
- There's visible sagging of more than about 1 to 2 centimetres in the sleep area
- You can feel the springs or coils through the surface
- The mattress is over 8 to 10 years old and no longer feels supportive
- You sleep better in hotels or on other mattresses consistently
- You wake up stiff every morning regardless of what you do
- The mattress has body impressions that don't spring back when you get up
The Sag Test
- Run your hand flat across the mattress surface: If you can feel a valley or depression where you sleep, that's sag.
- Look at the mattress from the side with fresh eyes: Even a small dip of 2 to 3 cm changes your spinal alignment significantly over 8 hours.
- Note where you wake up sore: Lower back pain on a sagging mattress comes from spinal misalignment that a topper cannot fix, because you're still sinking into the same depression underneath.
- When in doubt, come in: At our Brantford showroom, Brad can take a look and give you an honest read. We're not going to tell you to buy a new mattress if you don't need one.
We want to be straightforward about this: if you add a plush topper to a sagging mattress, you will initially feel the softness of the topper. But within a few weeks, you'll be compressing through the topper into the same sagging zone, and you'll be back where you started, except you've spent money on a topper too.
If your mattress needs replacing, our mattress collection includes options at a range of price points. The Restonic ComfortCare Queen, for example, has 1,222 individually wrapped coils and is one of the most consistently recommended mattresses in our showroom. If you're looking for a quality Canadian-made mattress, our Sleep In flippable collection is worth considering as well.
Caring for Your Plush Topper
A good topper is an investment. With reasonable care, you can extend its life by two or three years and keep it sleeping well for longer.
Use a Mattress Protector on Top
Yes, on top of the topper. Put your protector over the topper (not between the mattress and the topper), then your fitted sheet over that. This protects the topper from spills, sweat, and skin oils, all of which degrade the material over time. It also makes laundry easier since you're washing the protector regularly rather than the topper itself.
Rotate Regularly
Rotate your topper 180 degrees every three months. This distributes wear more evenly and prevents the sleep area from compressing faster than the rest of the topper. With memory foam, this makes a real difference in longevity.
Air It Out
Every few months, strip the bed and let the topper air out for a few hours. This releases accumulated moisture and reduces the chance of odour or mould developing in the foam or fill. A breezy day when you can prop it up near a window is ideal.
Washing Instructions by Material
- Memory foam and latex: Do not machine wash. Spot clean with mild detergent and water, then air dry fully before putting it back on the bed. Machine washing destroys the cellular structure of the foam.
- Down and down alternative: Most can be machine washed on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Use a large-capacity machine (or the laundromat). Dry on low heat with a couple of dryer balls to keep the fill from clumping.
- Wool: Check the label. Some wool toppers are machine washable on a wool/delicate cycle; others need dry cleaning. Avoid hot water and agitation, which will cause wool to felt and shrink.
Getting New Foam Smell Under Control
Most new memory foam and latex toppers have an off-gassing smell when you first unbox them. This is normal and fades within a day or two. Unbox the topper and let it air out in a well-ventilated room (not directly on your bed) for at least 24 hours before use. The smell is unpleasant but not harmful, and it goes away on its own. Don't try to speed the process with heat, which can damage the foam structure.
Storage
If you store a topper seasonally, roll it loosely (don't fold) and store it flat or on its side in a breathable bag. Avoid compression storage bags for foam toppers; extended compression can permanently damage the foam cells. For down and wool, breathable cotton storage bags are better than plastic, which traps moisture.
Buying a Plush Topper in Brantford
There are a few different ways to buy a plush mattress topper, and the right approach depends on what you already know about what you need.
In-Store at Mattress Miracle

Sleep Comfort in a Brantford Winter
Brantford winters are cold, and that changes what makes a good topper. A memory foam topper that sleeps a bit warm in July can actually be a welcome feature in January. Conversely, a wool topper's temperature-regulating properties really shine in a climate like ours, where you might want warmth in winter but breathability on a muggy August night. When customers from the Brantford area ask us about toppers, we always factor in the season. What feels right in March might feel different in July.
Online Shopping Considerations
Online topper shopping is convenient but comes with one significant challenge: you can't try it before you buy. A few things to look for when shopping online for a plush mattress topper:
- Return policy: Look for a company with a proper trial period (at least 30 days, ideally 90 or more). Toppers that can't be returned are a gamble.
- Foam density listed in specs: If the product listing doesn't tell you the foam density (in lb/ft3), that's usually a sign the quality isn't worth advertising.
- Weight of down fill: For down and alternative toppers, fill weight should be listed. Higher is generally better for loft and durability.
- Country of manufacture: This doesn't guarantee quality, but knowing where it's made helps with research.
Our online store at mattressmiracle.ca also carries bedding accessories including toppers and protectors. Online purchases through our store can use Shop Pay for installment payment options.
Sizing Your Topper Correctly
This should be simple, but it's worth noting: always buy the topper to match your mattress size exactly. A queen topper on a queen mattress, a king on a king. Toppers that overhang will fold over the edge and create an uneven sleeping surface. Toppers that are slightly undersized won't stay in place.
If your mattress is an unusual size (RV mattress, antique bed frame, or a custom size), measure before you order. Standard Canadian sizing runs:
| Size | Dimensions (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Twin / Single | 38" x 75" |
| Twin XL | 38" x 80" |
| Double / Full | 54" x 75" |
| Queen | 60" x 80" |
| King | 76" x 80" |
| California King | 72" x 84" |

What is a plush mattress topper?
A plush mattress topper is a thick, soft layer placed on top of your existing mattress to add cushioning and pressure relief. Common fill materials include memory foam, down, down alternative, and wool. Thickness typically ranges from 2 to 4 inches, and the right choice depends on your sleep position and how firm your current mattress is.
How thick should a plush mattress topper be?
For most sleepers, a 2-inch topper offers noticeable softness without making the bed feel unstable. Side sleepers and those with pressure point discomfort often do better with a 3-inch topper for deeper cushioning around hips and shoulders. A 4-inch topper is best reserved for people with a very firm mattress who need significant comfort adjustment.
Will a plush mattress topper help with back pain?
It depends on the cause of the pain. If your mattress is too firm and is creating pressure points, a plush topper can reduce discomfort. However, if your mattress has lost its support or is sagging, a topper will not fix that. A plush topper on a worn-out mattress typically makes alignment worse. Consult your doctor or physiotherapist if back pain is persistent.
How long does a plush mattress topper last?
Quality varies considerably. A well-made memory foam or latex topper typically holds its shape for 3 to 5 years with regular use. Down and down alternative toppers may need replacing sooner, especially if washed frequently. Rotating the topper every few months and using a mattress protector on top of it will extend its useful life.
