Purple Grid: What It Is, How It Works, and Who It's For

The Purple Grid is the technology that distinguishes Purple mattresses from every foam and hybrid alternative on the market. It is not a marketing term for a foam variation, it is a structurally different material that behaves differently under pressure and temperature than any foam. Understanding how it works explains both why some sleepers strongly prefer it and why others do not.

How the Purple Grid Works

The Purple Grid is made from hyper-elastic polymer, a food-grade, non-toxic, latex-free material similar in elasticity to silicone. It is molded into a grid of open columns: rows of squares, each column independent, each capable of collapsing under sufficient downward pressure and returning to full height when pressure is removed.

This column structure creates two distinct responses in the same material:

• Under high-pressure areas (shoulders, hips, knees): the columns collapse, reducing resistance and creating pressure relief at the contact point
• Under low-pressure areas (lumbar, legs, areas away from bony prominences): the columns remain upright, providing firm support

The result is automatic zone differentiation without requiring a complex multi-zone foam construction, the material self-adjusts to the pressure applied at each specific point of contact. This is mechanically different from how foam works: foam compresses uniformly based on density and deforms more slowly, while the grid responds immediately and returns quickly when weight shifts.

The Grid and Cooling: Why It's Different

Foam, even open-cell foam, even gel-infused foam, restricts airflow at the sleep surface. The foam material surrounds the sleeper's body and creates a microclimate of trapped heat and humidity. Gel infusions and open-cell structures slow this heat buildup but do not eliminate it.

The Purple Grid eliminates this problem differently: the open squares in the grid allow air to circulate continuously through the comfort layer. There is no foam barrier surrounding the sleeper because the comfort layer is physically open. Body heat dissipates through the channels rather than being reflected back.

Pressure Relief and Spinal Alignment

The grid's self-adjusting column collapse provides meaningful pressure relief at the shoulder and hip, the two areas where conventional firmness mismatches most commonly cause discomfort for side sleepers. The immediate return of the polymer (versus slow memory foam response) means the grid adjusts as the sleeper moves, not just when they first lie down.

For back sleepers, the columns that remain upright under the lumbar zone provide active support rather than the passive sinking common in softer foam mattresses. The grid's effectiveness is weight-dependent. The column collapse threshold is tuned for a specific pressure range. Grid Limitations

Motion transfer. The grid transmits movement more readily than foam. When a partner shifts position, the grid response is felt across the mattress surface more than it would be on a foam mattress. For couples where one partner is a restless sleeper, this is a meaningful limitation. Purple Hybrid models add pocket coils that improve motion isolation, but the grid layer still contributes to higher motion transfer than foam-only alternatives.

Edge support. The grid columns compress at the mattress edge under sitting pressure more readily than a high-density foam perimeter or coil edge support system. Sitting on the side of a Purple mattress to put on shoes, for example, produces more compression than most foam or hybrid alternatives at this price.
