Quick Answer: Why Won't a Regular Topper Fit?
A standard Queen mattress is 80 inches long. An RV "Short Queen" is 75 inches long.
If you put a regular topper on your camper bed, it will overhang by 5 inches. In a tight travel trailer, this overhang blocks the walkway or prevents the bedroom door from closing. While you can cut a foam topper with an electric carving knife, it's messy and voids the warranty. Buying a dedicated Short Queen (60" x 75") Topper ensures a perfect fit right out of the box.

Brantford is a gateway to Ontario's camping country. But ask any RV owner about their first night in a new trailer, and they will complain about the mattress. To save weight, manufacturers install thin, cheap pads that feel like sleeping on plywood.
At Mattress Miracle, we know you don't want to replace a brand new RV mattress immediately. A Short Queen Topper is the cost-effective bridge to luxury camping.

The "Stock Mattress" Problem
RV mattresses are often only 4-6 inches thick. You can feel the platform underneath.
The Solution: Adding 3 inches of high-density memory foam transforms that 6-inch pad into a 9-inch plush surface. It absorbs the vibrations of the trailer and cushions your hips against the hard platform.
Memory Foam vs. Latex for RVs
Camping introduces temperature variables your home bedroom doesn't have.
Memory Foam:
Pros: Excellent pressure relief. Stops you from rolling into your partner.
Cons: Temperature Sensitive. If you camp in early May or late October, the foam will be hard as a rock until your body heat warms it up. It also traps heat in July.
Latex:
Pros: Temperature neutral. It stays soft even in freezing temperatures. Naturally mold-resistant (crucial for damp campers).
Cons: Heavier. Keep your trailer's payload GVWR in mind.
Choosing the Right Thickness
Topper thickness matters more in an RV than in a home bedroom because you are dealing with limited headroom and a thinner base mattress. Our guide to choosing topper thickness and density covers the fundamentals that carry over from any residential bed.
Thickness Guide by Situation
- 2 inches: Good for newer RVs with a decent (but not great) stock mattress. Adds a comfort layer without eating into your overhead clearance. Best for weekend campers who do not sleep in the trailer every night.
- 3 inches: The sweet spot for most RV owners. Transforms a mediocre stock mattress into something genuinely comfortable. A 3-inch, 4 lb density memory foam topper adds about 8 lbs to your bed, which is negligible for payload.
- 4 inches: Only if your RV has generous headroom. Measure from the top of your current mattress to the bottom of any overhead cabinets before ordering. If you have less than 24 inches of clearance, a 4-inch topper will make the space feel cramped.
Why Travel Sleep Feels Different
Research on the "first night effect" shows that one hemisphere of the brain stays more alert when sleeping in an unfamiliar environment. This is an evolutionary survival response. A familiar, comfortable sleep surface helps reduce this effect, which is why upgrading your RV mattress makes such a measurable difference in how rested you feel after a night of camping.
Weight is another factor. If you and your partner weigh more than 300 lbs combined, a 2-inch topper will compress flat by morning. Go with 3 inches minimum in that case. The foam density rating (measured in lbs per cubic foot) tells you how well the topper holds up under weight. Look for 3.5 lb density or higher.
Topper vs. Full RV Mattress Replacement
At some point, every RV owner asks whether they should just replace the entire mattress instead of adding a topper. The answer depends on three things: the condition of your current mattress, your budget, and how often you camp.
When a Topper is the Right Call
- Your stock mattress is thin but not damaged: If the foam is still intact and not sagging, a topper adds the comfort layer it was missing from the factory.
- You camp fewer than 30 nights per year: For weekend and vacation use, a quality topper gives you home-level comfort without the cost of a full replacement.
- Budget is a concern: A Short Queen topper runs $150 to $350 depending on material and thickness. A full Short Queen RV mattress starts around $500 and goes up from there.
When to replace the whole mattress: If the stock mattress has visible sags, permanent body impressions, or a musty smell that will not go away, a topper cannot fix what is underneath. You are better off starting fresh with a proper RV mattress. We carry Short Queen and RV Queen mattresses in several thickness options.
Ontario RV Season
Camping season in Ontario typically runs from May long weekend through Thanksgiving in October. That gives you roughly 20 weekends of use. If you are heading to campgrounds around Brantford, Grand River, or Long Point, a comfortable sleep setup makes the difference between enjoying the trip and counting the hours until you get home. Many of our customers tell us their camping improved more from upgrading the mattress than from any other trailer accessory.
Winter Storage Warnings
If you store your RV in Brantford over the winter, remove your topper. Freezing and thawing cycles cause condensation to form inside the foam, leading to mildew. At the very least, prop the mattress and topper up on their sides to allow airflow during storage.
Moisture Management on the Road
Condensation is the silent mattress killer in RVs. Body heat rises through the mattress and hits the cold platform underneath, creating moisture. Use a waterproof mattress protector between the stock mattress and the topper. Open a roof vent or window for 15 minutes each morning to let trapped moisture escape. Dorothy, our sleep specialist, hears more complaints about damp mattresses in campers than any other single issue.
The DIY Trimming Guide
If You Must Cut It...
Can't find a Short Queen? You can cut a Standard Queen foam topper.
1. Remove the Cover: You cannot cut the fabric cover easily.
2. Measure 75": Mark your line.
3. Electric Knife: Use a kitchen electric carving knife. It slices foam like butter. Scissors will hack it and leave a jagged edge.
4. Re-Cover: Fold the excess fabric cover under the mattress.

Will a topper slide off an RV bed?
RVs aren't level. Toppers slide. We recommend using sheet straps (suspenders) underneath the mattress to clamp the topper and mattress together.
Can I fold the bed with a topper on it?
If you have a Murphy-style RV bed or a slide-out fold, a memory foam topper can fold, but it puts stress on the crease. Roll it up before folding the bed if possible.
Do you sell Short Queen sheets?
Yes. Using standard Queen sheets on a Short Queen results in 5 inches of baggy fabric. We stock properly sized RV sheets.
Is 4 inches too thick?
Be careful with height. If your RV bed has overhead cabinets, adding a 4-inch topper might reduce your headroom to claustrophobic levels. 2-3 inches is usually the safe sweet spot.
What is the weight limit for an RV mattress topper?
Most quality foam toppers handle up to 250 lbs per person without issue. For heavier sleepers, choose a higher density foam (4 lb or above) and go with 3 inches of thickness. Lower density foam compresses fully under heavier loads, which defeats the purpose of a topper.
