The Company That Invented the Pocketed Coil

Here is something most mattress salespeople will never tell you: the technology inside almost every modern hybrid mattress was invented by one company over a hundred years ago.

In 1925, a Simmons engineer named John Franklin Gail designed a machine that could wrap individual steel coils in fabric pockets and assemble them into a mattress support system. Before that machine, each pocketed coil was made by hand, which meant only passengers on luxury ocean liners like the Titanic could afford a mattress that used them.

Gail's invention changed everything. Simmons launched the Beautyrest on September 19, 1925, at a retail price of $39.50, about three to four times what consumers paid for a standard wire mattress. The Saturday Evening Post ran the first full-page advertisement, and within a few years, the pocketed coil became the standard for premium sleep.

That is genuinely impressive engineering history. Every hybrid mattress sold in Canada today, including every Sleep In model we carry in our Brantford showroom, owes something to what Gail built in that Simmons factory a century ago.

But here is the question worth asking: does the company that invented the technology still make the best version of it?

From $1.9 Billion in Debt to Your Bedroom

On January 23, 2023, Serta Simmons Bedding, the parent company behind Beautyrest, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the Southern District of Texas.

That sentence deserves a moment to sink in. The largest mattress manufacturer in North America, operating more than 30 production facilities, generating roughly $1.8 billion in annual revenue, carrying brands that had been household names for a century, could not pay its bills.

The debt was staggering: approximately $1.9 billion. The company had been leveraged heavily since a 2012 acquisition by Advent International, and by 2020, COVID-related factory closures drained whatever liquidity remained. SSB emerged from Chapter 11 on June 29, 2023, having reduced its debt to roughly $315 million, which sounds like a success story until you consider what debt restructuring actually means for the product you sleep on.

When a mattress company owes $1.9 billion, every material choice becomes a financial decision first and a comfort decision second. The foam densities, the coil gauge, the fabric quality, the number of comfort layers: all of these get evaluated through the lens of margin recovery. We are not saying Beautyrest started cutting corners after bankruptcy. We are saying that $1.9 billion in debt creates pressure that small manufacturers simply never face.

When a Name Becomes a Lineup

Try shopping for a Beautyrest and you will understand the first problem immediately: which Beautyrest?

The current Canadian lineup includes the Beautyrest World Class, the Beautyrest Black Series One, the Beautyrest Black Series Two, the Beautyrest Black Series Three, the Beautyrest Black Series Four, and several retailer-exclusive models like the Beautyrest Black Hotel Presidential Suite at The Brick. The recently discontinued Harmony Lux line (dropped August 2025) adds to the confusion if you are reading older reviews.

Each Black series tier layers on additional features. Series One has triple-stranded pocketed coils and HD memory foam. Series Two adds Micro Diamond memory foam. Series Three adds 2,000 micro coils on top of the base coils. Series Four adds 4,000 micro coils and even more HD memory foam layers.

This tiered approach is designed to move you up the price ladder. The World Class starts around $800 for a queen. The Black Series One costs significantly more. The Black Hotel Presidential Suite at The Brick retails for $2,449 for a queen. The jump from "Beautyrest" to "Beautyrest Black Series Four" can easily double or triple your spend, and the naming alone makes it nearly impossible to comparison shop across retailers.

Sleep In takes the opposite approach. The lineup is smaller, the naming is straightforward, and every model uses the same core philosophy: flippable dual-sided construction with individually pocketed coils. You are not navigating a four-tier system designed to upsell you. You are choosing a firmness level.

What $2,449 Buys vs What $1,299 Buys

Let us put real numbers on a table.

Two things stand out in that table. First, Beautyrest labels its foam as "HD Memory Foam" without publishing the actual density in pounds per cubic foot. In the mattress industry, foam density is the single most reliable predictor of durability. A foam labelled "high density" by a marketing department and a foam that actually measures 4 or 5 pounds per cubic foot are not necessarily the same thing. When a company does not publish the number, you cannot verify the claim.

Second, the coil count. Beautyrest pioneered the pocketed coil, but the company does not consistently publish exact coil counts for its current models the way smaller manufacturers do. Sleep In publishes 1,322 pocket coils for a queen. That specificity matters because it lets you compare directly.

The Warranty Question Nobody Asks at the Store

Both Beautyrest and Sleep In offer warranties. On paper, they look similar. In practice, they work very differently.

Beautyrest offers a 10-year limited warranty. The word "limited" does significant work in that sentence. Coverage depends on a warranty code printed on the mattress law tag. Some codes (A, B, H, I, J, K, M, N) require a visible indentation of 1.5 inches or deeper before the warranty applies. Other codes (E, L, O, P) set the threshold at 0.75 inches. If your mattress sags 1.4 inches and your code requires 1.5, your claim is denied.

The foundation requirements add another layer of complexity. Beautyrest's warranty is voided if your bed frame does not meet specific criteria: solid support at the head, centre, and sides, with at least five hardwood or metal slats for queen or larger sizes. Adjustable base? Better confirm it is on their approved list.

A former mattress warranty inspector, quoted in consumer forums, stated that Simmons Beautyrest had "a minimum of 10 complaints for every one complaint of all other manufacturers combined." That is not a statistic from a competitor. That is from someone whose job was processing warranty claims across all brands.

The Serta Simmons BBB profile tells its own story. The parent company holds an F rating (unaccredited) with the Better Business Bureau. Beautyrest's Trustpilot score sits at 1.9 out of 5, based on customer reviews that consistently cite sagging, warranty denials, and difficulty reaching customer service.

Where Your Mattress Actually Comes From

Serta Simmons Bedding operates 32 manufacturing plants in the United States and six in Canada. That sounds impressive until you consider what it means for consistency. A Beautyrest Black purchased at one retailer might come from a different plant than the same model purchased at another. Manufacturing across 38 facilities introduces variability that a single-facility operation does not face.

Sleep In mattresses are made in Canada. Not "designed in Canada and assembled elsewhere" or "Canadian company with overseas manufacturing." Made here. The supply chain is shorter, the quality control is tighter, and the accountability is clearer.

There is a larger story here about what happened to mattress manufacturing in North America over the past two decades. Private equity firms acquired legacy brands, loaded them with debt, extracted value through cost reductions, and left the brands carrying obligations they could never repay. Simmons alone has been through multiple leveraged buyouts. The 2012 Advent International acquisition added the debt that eventually led to the 2023 bankruptcy filing.

Sleep In has no private equity ownership. No leveraged buyouts. No $1.9 billion in debt that needs to be serviced through margin optimization. The company makes mattresses and sells them. That simplicity is not a limitation. It is an advantage.

The Flippable Factor

Every Sleep In hybrid is flippable. Both sides are engineered sleeping surfaces. This is not a gimmick. It is practical engineering that serves two purposes.

First, flipping extends the mattress lifespan. A single-sided mattress like every current Beautyrest model concentrates all wear on one surface. Body impressions accumulate faster because the same foam layers absorb the same pressure night after night. A flippable mattress distributes that wear across two surfaces, effectively doubling the time before compression becomes noticeable.

Second, flipping gives you options. Many Sleep In models offer different firmness levels on each side. Your comfort preferences at 35 are not your comfort preferences at 45. A back injury, a pregnancy, a change in sleeping position: any of these might shift what you need from your mattress. With a flippable model, you flip instead of replacing.

Beautyrest stopped making flippable mattresses years ago. The industry trend toward single-sided construction is driven by manufacturing cost, not by sleep science. Building one comfort surface is cheaper than building two. A 2018 study in Sleep Medicine Reviews found no evidence that single-sided mattresses provide better sleep outcomes than dual-sided models of equivalent construction quality.

Who Each Mattress Actually Suits

We are not going to pretend Beautyrest is a terrible mattress. It is not. The engineering history is real, the coil technology is proven, and millions of people sleep well on Beautyrest mattresses every night. If you value brand recognition, prefer shopping at large retailers, and are comfortable spending $1,500 to $2,500 on a queen, Beautyrest Black is a legitimate option.

But legitimacy is not the same as value.

Choosing Between History and Value

Beautyrest has a hundred years of brand equity. That is real, and it matters. The company invented the technology that makes modern hybrid mattresses possible. Every mattress manufacturer in the world, including Sleep In, benefits from what John Franklin Gail built in 1925.

But brand equity does not keep your spine aligned. A famous name does not determine foam density. A century of marketing does not make a warranty claim easier to file. And a post-bankruptcy balance sheet does not guarantee that the mattress rolling off the factory line today is built to the same standard as the one your grandparents bought in 1985.

Sleep In builds flippable hybrids with 1,322 individually pocketed coils, publishes its specifications, manufactures in Canada, and costs roughly half what a comparable Beautyrest Black costs. The company has no bankruptcy history, no private equity debt, and no confusing four-tier naming system designed to push you toward a more expensive model.
