Sleeping with Pets: Is It Safe for Your Sleep (and Your Dog)? | Mattress Miracle

Quick Answer: Sleeping with pets can reduce anxiety and increase comfort, but often disrupts sleep due to movement and heat. To co-sleep successfully: use a waterproof mattress protector, upgrade to a larger size (King is best), and ensure your pet is flea-free. Never give human melatonin to dogs without a vet's approval, as some gummies contain xylitol, which is toxic to pets.

Reading Time: 5 minutes

In Brantford, we love our dogs. Brad, our owner, knows this firsthand. For many of us, a dog isn't just a pet; it is a member of the family. And for many families, that member sleeps in the master bedroom.

But while snuggling with a Golden Retriever is comforting at 10 p.m., it can be disruptive at 3 a.m. when 70lbs of fur decides to stretch out diagonally.

At Mattress Miracle, we help many couples navigate the "pet dilemma." Can you sleep with your dog and still get a good night's rest? Yes, but you need the right setup.

The Comfort vs. Disruption Debate

The Good: Research shows that the rhythmic breathing and warmth of a dog can lower human heart rates and reduce anxiety. For people who live alone or have high stress, a pet is a living, breathing weighted blanket.

The Bad: Dogs have different sleep cycles. They wake up, circle, scratch, and dream (running in their sleep). This motion transfer can pull you out of deep sleep multiple times a night.

The "Micro-Awake" Effect

Even if you don't fully wake up when your cat jumps off the bed, your brain registers the movement. These "micro-arousals" can fragment your sleep architecture, leaving you feeling groggy in the morning even if you "slept through the night."

Can I Give My Dog Melatonin?

How sleeping with pets: is it safe for your sleep (and your dog)? works - educational diagram

Sometimes, it is the dog who has insomnia. Maybe they pace all night or are anxious during thunderstorms.

Many vets do prescribe melatonin for dogs to treat anxiety or hair loss (alopecia). However, you must be extremely careful.

WARNING: The Xylitol Danger
Many human melatonin gummies (especially "sugar-free" ones) contain Xylitol (often labeled as Birch Sugar). Xylitol is deadly to dogs. Even a small amount can cause liver failure.

Never give a dog a human sleep supplement without checking every single ingredient and consulting your vet. There are dog-specific formulations that are much safer.

Protecting Your Investment

If your dog sleeps in your bed, your mattress is absorbing:

  • Dander and fur
  • Dirt from paws
  • Saliva
  • Occasional accidents

A standard mattress warranty is voided if the mattress is stained. If your puppy has an accident on your $2,000 mattress, and you don't have a protector, you have just lost your warranty.

The Mandatory Fix: A high-quality, breathable, waterproof mattress protector. We recommend the 5-Sided Protectors we carry in store. They stop liquid but let air pass through, so you don't sleep hot.

The "King Size" Argument

Person experiencing sleeping with pets: is it safe for your sleep (and your dog)? in their bedroom

If you sleep with a partner AND a dog, a Queen mattress (60 inches wide) is mathematically too small.

In a Queen, two adults have 30 inches of width each (less than a baby crib). Add a 50lb dog, and you are frozen in one position all night to avoid kicking someone. This lack of movement causes stiffness and pain.

Upgrade to King

A King mattress is 76 inches wide,16 inches wider than a Queen. That extra space is exactly the size of a medium dog. Upgrading to a King is often cheaper than renovating the guest room for when one of you gets fed up.

Our Restonic ComfortCare King starts at just $2,051. It is a small price to pay for reclaiming your personal space.

Will dog claws puncture my mattress?

Unlikely to puncture the mattress itself, but they can snag and tear the delicate knit fabric on top. A mattress protector acts as a sacrificial layer, protecting the expensive ticking from claws.

Does sleeping with a dog cause allergies?

If you are prone to allergies, yes. You are sleeping with the allergen inches from your nose for 8 hours. If you wake up congested, try banning the pet from the bedroom for two weeks to see if it clears up.

How often should I wash my sheets if I co-sleep with pets?

Weekly is the minimum. If your dog sheds a lot or goes outside frequently, many experts recommend twice a week to keep dander and pollen levels low.

Can an adjustable bed help my dog?

Actually, yes! Older dogs with arthritis often struggle to jump up onto high beds. Lowering the bed (if legs are adjustable) or using a "pet ramp" protects their joints. Just be careful operating the remote so you don't pinch a tail!
