What is new is that researchers have started putting these practices under controlled conditions to see what actually works.

The core principle is brainwave entrainment: when your brain is exposed to a consistent rhythmic stimulus, its electrical activity tends to synchronise with that stimulus. If the stimulus operates at a frequency associated with sleep (delta waves, 0.5 to 4 Hz, or theta waves, 4 to 8 Hz), the theory is that your brain will follow, easing the transition from wakefulness to sleep.

What the Research Says

The evidence is growing but still developing. Here is what the clinical studies have found so far.

The 2025 Meta-Analysis

Wang et al. (2025) published a systematic review and meta-analysis in Frontiers in Neuroscience examining 8 randomised controlled trials with 419 participants. The pooled results showed that acoustic stimulation produced a statistically significant improvement in sleep quality (PSQI reduction of 2.68 points, p < 0.00001) and insomnia severity (ISI reduction of 2.26 points, p = 0.02).

However, the analysis found no significant improvement in sleep efficiency or total sleep time. In other words, sound healing appears to make people feel like they slept better without necessarily changing how long or how efficiently they slept. This suggests the benefit may be primarily psychological: reduced anxiety at bedtime leads to a better subjective experience of sleep.

The Subjective vs. Objective Gap

This is one of the most important findings in sound healing research. A 2025 meta-narrative review by Gou et al. in Frontiers in Neurology analysed 27 studies and confirmed that music therapy significantly improves subjective sleep quality but that effects on objective measures (measured by polysomnography or actigraphy) are inconsistent. This does not mean the benefit is not real. Subjective sleep quality is one of the strongest predictors of daytime functioning and overall wellbeing.
