Mattress shopping has gotten complicated. Walk into a big-box store or scroll through Amazon and you will find mattresses made with green tea extract, graphene, charcoal, copper nanoparticles, and all sorts of things that sound more like a chemistry lab than a bedroom. Then there are the traditional luxury materials, coconut fibre, horsehair, hemp, and Tencel, which have their own set of marketing claims attached.
Brad, our senior consultant here at Mattress Miracle, has been having this conversation with customers for over 35 years. His take is straightforward: "I would rather explain what something actually does than let people buy based on a buzzword. Sometimes the fancy material is worth it. Sometimes it is not."
This guide covers both sides. Natural materials first, then the trending foam infusions, with an honest look at what the research supports and what is mostly packaging.
Natural and Organic Materials Explained
Natural mattress materials have been used for centuries in various forms, and the better ones have genuine research behind them. The challenge is that "natural" has become as much a marketing term as a meaningful descriptor. Below is a material-by-material breakdown of what they are, what they do, and where the trade-offs sit.
Coconut Fibre (Coir)
Coconut fibre, also called coir, is made from the husks of coconuts. The outer husk is processed into a coarse, springy padding layer that can be compressed into a firm support mat inside a mattress.
Coir is naturally breathable and has antimicrobial properties, largely because its pH is resistant to the conditions dust mites prefer. It has a long history in traditional mattress-making across South Asia and parts of Europe, particularly in orthopaedic-style mattresses that prioritise firm, even support.
The trade-off is firmness. Coconut fibre does not contour, stretch, or conform the way foam does. If you sleep on your side, the pressure points on your hip and shoulder will feel it. It suits back sleepers and people who want a very firm, stable surface.
You will not commonly find coconut fibre mattresses in Canadian retail. They are more prevalent in Indian, South Asian, and some European markets. A handful of specialty natural sleep retailers online carry them, but mainstream Canadian mattress stores rarely stock them. We do not carry coconut fibre mattresses at Mattress Miracle, but if a customer asks about firm, breathable natural options, coir-hybrid mattresses available online are worth a look if the firmness suits you.
Hemp Fibre
Hemp is having a bit of a moment, and that applies to mattresses as well as everything else. Hemp fibre is a natural plant fibre that is naturally mould-resistant and breathable. As a crop, it requires very little water and no pesticides, which gives it genuine sustainability credentials.
Inside a mattress, hemp fibre is typically used as an interior padding layer, similar to how coir is used, adding firmness and breathability. It does not have the spring-like micro-structure of horsehair or the contouring of latex, but it contributes to a firmer, airier feel.
Hemp mattresses exist, but they are niche, primarily found through online specialty retailers focused on natural sleep. They are not a mainstream Canadian retail category yet.
One thing worth watching: "hemp-blend" on a label can mean very little hemp and a lot of other things. Unlike organic cotton, hemp is not regulated under a consistent certification standard in the mattress industry. Ask for the percentage of hemp content before assuming the label means what you think it means.
Horsehair: The Genuine Luxury Option
Horsehair is the material that comes up whenever someone asks about truly premium European mattresses, and for good reason. It is used by brands like Hästens and Vispring, and when people discover the price tags ($5,000 to $20,000 and well beyond), the usual reaction is disbelief.
What makes horsehair worth that price to the people who buy it?
The hair has a natural crimp that creates a spring-like micro-support structure. Each strand pushes back gently and independently, which creates a responsive, breathable comfort layer that does not compress flat over time the way foam does. Horsehair mattresses are exceptionally durable. A quality horsehair mattress, properly maintained, can last 25 or more years. They are also natural temperature regulators: moisture moves through the fibres rather than being trapped, so they tend to sleep at a neutral temperature across seasons.
We do not carry horsehair mattresses at Mattress Miracle. The price point and the relatively small market for them in Brantford does not make sense for our showroom. But if you are asking whether they are genuinely worth the price, the honest answer is yes, for the people for whom that price is within reach. The materials and the longevity justify the cost in a way that many luxury mattress claims do not.
Why Horsehair Lasts So Long
The natural crimp structure in horsehair means individual fibres flex and return rather than permanently deforming under weight. Unlike foam, which is a polymer that degrades chemically and physically over time, animal fibres can maintain their structural properties for decades when kept clean and dry. The best horsehair mattresses are often refillable and re-tufted after 20 to 25 years, effectively extending their life indefinitely. That changes the cost-per-year calculation considerably.
Tencel and What It Actually Does
Tencel is a brand name for lyocell fibre, made from eucalyptus wood pulp. It is manufactured through a closed-loop process where 90 percent or more of the solvent used is recovered and recycled, which gives it strong environmental credentials compared to conventional fabrics.
For mattresses, Tencel is primarily used as a cover fabric. It has two properties that matter for sleep: moisture management and surface smoothness.
Tencel absorbs and releases moisture roughly 50 percent faster than cotton. For someone who sleeps warm or who sweats during the night, that moisture-wicking action means the surface stays drier for longer. The moisture moves through the fibre rather than pooling at the surface.
The surface smoothness is a secondary benefit that does not get mentioned enough. A smoother sleep surface creates less friction when you move. Fewer sleep disturbances from movement resistance is a real quality-of-life improvement, even if it sounds small.
Our Restonic models feature Tencel-blend covers on select lines. When Dorothy is explaining the difference between models, this is one of the details she points out, because for warm sleepers it actually makes a noticeable difference in how the mattress feels night to night.
One label note: bamboo fabric is sometimes manufactured using the lyocell process, which means it may perform similarly to Tencel. But "bamboo fabric" can also mean bamboo that has been processed into viscose rayon using a very different, more chemically intensive method. Check the label for the manufacturing process, not just the source fibre.
Organic Cotton and GOTS Certification
Organic cotton mattress covers are widely marketed, but the term "organic cotton" is not meaningful without a certification backing it up. The one to look for is GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard. GOTS covers the entire chain of custody from field to finished product, including soil management, processing chemicals, and labour conditions.
GOTS-certified organic cotton is genuinely different from conventional cotton in a few measurable ways: it is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, it is more breathable than conventionally processed cotton, and it tends to be more durable over time because the fibre is not damaged by the bleaching and chemical processing conventional cotton goes through.
"Natural cotton" or "pure cotton" on a label without a certification is not the same thing. Cotton is one of the most heavily chemically treated crops in conventional agriculture. If the organic claim matters to you, the certification is the only way to verify it.
Wool and Natural Latex
Wool
Wool is one of the few mattress materials that serves two functions at once: temperature regulation and fire resistance. That second function matters more than people realise.
Mattresses sold in Canada must meet fire-resistance standards. Most manufacturers meet this requirement using chemical fire barriers. Wool is a natural alternative. It is inherently difficult to ignite and self-extinguishes, which means mattresses made with wool comfort layers can use wool as the fire barrier instead of synthetic chemicals.
On the temperature side, wool wicks moisture when your body is warm and insulates when it is cool. The fibre structure achieves this passively, without any phase-change chemistry or gel. Research published in Nature and Science of Sleep by Shin and colleagues in 2016 found that wool bedding improved sleep quality and reduced waking compared to cotton alternatives, attributed largely to the thermoregulatory properties of wool.

Customers who run warm or who want to avoid synthetic chemical fire barriers specifically ask about this model. Vegans will want to look at Tencel or cotton alternatives instead, since wool is an animal product.
Natural Latex
Natural latex is tapped from rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) and processed into foam. There are two main processing methods: Talalay and Dunlop.
Talalay latex is lighter, has a more open-cell structure, breathes slightly better, and has a more consistent feel throughout the material. It is the higher-end process and is used in our Revive Tiffany Rose and Jasmine models ($1,995), which feature Talalay Copper Latex layers.
Dunlop latex is denser, heavier, and firmer. It is a simpler process with a smaller environmental footprint, and it produces a more durable, longer-lasting foam. Dunlop is often used in the support layers of hybrid latex mattresses.
For organic certification on latex, look for GOLS, the Global Organic Latex Standard. This is the latex equivalent of GOTS for cotton, and it verifies that the rubber source and processing meet organic standards. Rubber plantations certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Rainforest Alliance also indicate responsible sourcing practices that protect the ecosystems where rubber trees grow.
Natural latex is technically vegan, since no animals are harmed in the tapping process. However, some people with latex allergies cannot tolerate it. If you have had a latex allergy reaction before, let us know when you come in so we can steer you toward appropriate alternatives.
Exotic Foam Infusions: The Reality Check
Over the past several years, a wave of mattresses has appeared online and at discount retailers with unusual-sounding ingredients. Most originate from Chinese manufacturers and have spread to North American markets through Amazon, Wayfair, and big-box stores. The infusions have appealing names and the marketing is confident. The science is more complicated.
What follows is a straightforward assessment of each, based on what the chemistry actually says.
Green Tea Foam, Charcoal Foam, and Bamboo Charcoal
Green Tea Foam
The actual ingredient in green tea foam mattresses is green tea extract, specifically EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), infused into polyurethane foam during manufacturing. The claimed benefits are antibacterial activity, deodorising properties, and antioxidant effects.
The reality: the concentration of green tea extract in foam is typically far too low to produce meaningful antibacterial activity in a sleep environment. EGCG does have antimicrobial properties in laboratory studies, but the dosage matters enormously, and encasing the extract in polymer foam reduces its available surface area drastically.
The smell you sometimes notice in a new green tea foam mattress is more related to the off-gassing of the foam manufacturing process than to the green tea. The extract may contribute a mild pleasant scent initially, but it does not persist and it does not have clinical significance.
That said, a green tea foam mattress is safe to sleep on. There is nothing harmful about it. Just do not expect medicinal benefits from something that is, at its core, a regular polyurethane foam mattress with a small amount of plant extract added.
Charcoal Foam and Bamboo Charcoal Foam
Activated charcoal has genuine adsorption properties in the right context. It works in water filters, air purifiers, and medical applications because it has an enormous surface area at the microscopic level that traps molecules. The claim for charcoal-infused foam is that it absorbs odours and moisture from the sleep environment.
The problem is the encapsulation. When charcoal particles are mixed into foam during manufacturing, they are bound up in polymer. The surface area available for actual adsorption is dramatically reduced compared to free-floating activated charcoal. You are not getting the full adsorption effect. You are getting a reduced version of it.
Unlike green tea foam, there is at least a chemical basis for the charcoal claim. Activated charcoal does what it is described as doing. The honest question is whether the dose achievable in encapsulated foam form is enough to matter in practice. The answer is probably "a little, but not dramatically."
Bamboo charcoal is the same concept with a different source material. The charcoal is derived from bamboo rather than other organic sources. The adsorption chemistry is essentially the same. The "bamboo" prefix adds a sustainability-sounding quality to the marketing, and bamboo is a more rapidly renewable resource than some alternatives, so there is some validity to the sourcing claim even if the functional difference is minimal.
Copper-Infused Foam and Graphene Foam
Copper-Infused Foam
Copper-infused foam is more defensible than the others. Copper does have genuine antimicrobial properties, and it is the only one of these foam infusions with EPA registration for its antimicrobial claims. The US Environmental Protection Agency registers copper alloy surfaces as effective against bacteria and certain viruses, which is a meaningful regulatory acknowledgment that most of the other infusions do not have.
The cooling claim is also partially grounded in physics. Copper conducts heat away from the body surface better than plain foam. This is real, and it is why you might notice a mattress with a copper infusion or copper-infused cover feels cooler to the touch initially.
The qualifications: on the antimicrobial side, the concentration of copper particles in foam and whether they remain effective at the micro-doses used is still being debated. Copper is most effective as an antimicrobial when the surface has direct, sustained contact with pathogens, which is not quite how you sleep on a mattress. On the cooling side, copper conducts heat away from the surface initially, but the foam underneath still traps and stores body heat over the course of the night. The cooling benefit is real but temporary.
Interestingly, our Revive Tiffany Rose and Jasmine models use Talalay Copper Latex rather than copper-infused polyurethane foam. Copper in latex performs differently than copper in foam because the latex itself is more breathable and open-celled to begin with. It is a better material combination than copper in dense polyurethane foam.
Graphene Foam
Graphene is the most exotic of these materials. True graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice. It is one of the most thermally conductive materials known and has impressive electromagnetic properties. The marketing around graphene mattresses often references these properties: extreme cooling, far-infrared emission, and sometimes electromagnetic shielding.
The problem is that "graphene" in a mattress is almost never true single-layer graphene. It is typically graphene flakes, graphene oxide, or graphene-like carbon compounds, which have meaningfully different properties. True graphene is extraordinarily expensive to produce. If a mattress costs $800, it does not contain meaningful amounts of genuine single-layer graphene.
There may be some thermal conductivity benefit from the carbon compounds added, but the dosage and encapsulation in foam reduce the effect substantially. The electromagnetic shielding and far-infrared claims are harder to verify and mostly unsupported by peer-reviewed research in the mattress context.
Of all the exotic foam infusions, graphene is the one with the largest gap between the marketing claims and the verifiable evidence. It is also the hardest for a consumer to fact-check, because the science around graphene itself is genuinely impressive, which lends credibility to the claims even when the application is very different.
Why Encapsulation Matters for All These Foams
Many of these exotic foam claims run into the same fundamental problem: encapsulation. When particles (charcoal, copper, green tea extract, graphene) are mixed into polyurethane foam during manufacturing, they are suspended in a polymer matrix. The surface area of those particles that is actually exposed to the sleep environment, meaning the air, moisture, and body heat they are supposed to interact with, is dramatically reduced compared to free-standing materials. The chemistry behind the claim may be sound, but the delivery method limits the dose. It is a bit like taking a vitamin that is bound in a form your body cannot absorb. The ingredient is there; the bioavailability is the question.
Gel Memory Foam and Vegan Mattresses
Gel Memory Foam
Gel memory foam is the most mainstream of the "infused foam" category and also the best documented. Gel beads or gel swirl is mixed into memory foam, and the claimed benefit is cooling.
The evidence here is the strongest of the group. Gel foam does conduct heat away from the body surface more effectively than plain memory foam, and it does feel noticeably cooler to the touch. Studies on phase-change materials in bedding applications confirm that materials with higher thermal conductivity reduce the surface temperature at the sleep interface.
The qualification is duration. Gel saturates with body heat over the course of the night. A gel memory foam mattress may feel cooler for the first hour or two of sleep, but by the time you have been lying on it for four to five hours, the temperature differential from a non-gel foam is much smaller. It is better than plain memory foam, but it is not a solution for people who sleep very hot throughout the entire night. For that, breathable natural materials or an open-cell latex are more consistently effective.
Vegan Mattresses
Vegan mattresses avoid wool, horsehair, silk, and down. These are the animal-derived materials most commonly found in traditional mattress construction. The challenge is that "vegan mattress" is not a regulated term. Any mattress can call itself vegan without verification.
For customers who want to avoid animal products in their mattress, the practical checklist is: no wool comfort layers (check the materials list, not just the marketing), Tencel or organic cotton covers instead of wool-blend covers, and no silk or horsehair components.
Natural latex is vegan. Rubber is tapped from living trees without harming them. Some latex-sensitive individuals have allergic reactions to natural latex, but from an ethical standpoint it qualifies as vegan. Plant-based memory foam, made using castor oil-derived polyols in part or in full rather than purely petroleum-derived polyols, is another option marketed to the vegan-conscious consumer. The environmental footprint is somewhat better; the material performance is similar to conventional memory foam.

It tends to breathe slightly better and is used in our Revive Tiffany Rose and Jasmine models. Dunlop latex is denser, heavier, and firmer. The process is simpler and has a smaller environmental footprint. Dunlop is more often used in the support layers of latex hybrid mattresses. Is natural latex vegan?
Yes. Natural latex is derived from rubber trees by tapping the bark and collecting the sap, which does not harm the tree. No animals are involved in the process. Natural latex is generally accepted as vegan-compatible. The exception to be aware of is latex allergies: some people who are sensitive to latex proteins may react to natural latex foam even without a prior diagnosed allergy. Synthetic latex (styrene-butadiene rubber) is an alternative that does not carry the same protein concern, though it does not have the same environmental profile as natural latex.
