This liquid contains roughly 30-40% dry rubber content, with the remainder being water, proteins, lipids, and other organic compounds. Through processing, the water content is removed and the rubber particles are transformed into the foam used in mattresses, pillows, and other products.

The primary component of natural latex is polyisoprene (cis-1,4-polyisoprene), a polymer chain of isoprene units linked in a repeating pattern. This molecular structure is what gives natural rubber its remarkable elasticity, the chains can stretch significantly and return to their original shape without permanent deformation. The Rubber Tree: Hevea Brasiliensis
Hevea brasiliensis is native to the Amazon basin in South America but is now grown primarily in Southeast Asia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia account for the majority of the world's natural rubber production. The tree grows in tropical climates with high rainfall and warm temperatures, typically reaching productive maturity after 7 years of growth.
Latex is harvested through a process called tapping. A plantation worker makes a shallow diagonal cut in the bark of the tree, which stimulates the tree to release latex from the lacticifer vessels just beneath the bark. The latex flows down the cut and into a collection cup. A single tap produces roughly 30-50 mL of latex, and trees are tapped on a rotating schedule, typically every other day, to allow recovery without harming the tree. A rubber tree can be productively tapped for 25-30 years.

Step 1: Collection and Preservation
Fresh latex is collected from the trees and treated with ammonia to prevent coagulation during transport. The preserved liquid latex is shipped to processing facilities.
Step 2: Compounding
Vulcanizing agents (sulphur compounds) and other processing chemicals are added. These chemicals cross-link the polymer chains, giving the final product its elastic, non-sticky properties. Without vulcanization, natural rubber would be sticky and degradable.
Step 3: Frothing (Aeration)
Air is whipped into the latex compound using mechanical mixers, creating a foam similar to whipped cream. The density of the final foam is controlled by how much air is incorporated at this stage.
Step 4: Moulding and Vulcanization
The frothed latex is poured or injected into moulds with pin cores (which create the characteristic holes in a latex mattress layer). The mould is heated, baking the latex foam into its final shape and cross-linking the polymer structure for durability.
Step 5: Washing and Drying
The cured latex block is washed multiple times to remove residual processing chemicals and proteins. This is important for quality and for reducing residual latex protein content (relevant for people with latex allergies). The washed latex is then dried and inspected.

The Dunlop and Talalay processes are variations of the above sequence that produce latex foam with different characteristics:

What Is Synthetic Latex Made Of?
Synthetic latex is not derived from plants. It is made from petroleum-based chemicals, primarily styrene and butadiene, polymerized to create styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). This process replicates some of the elastic properties of natural rubber but with a different molecular structure.
The practical differences for mattress buyers:
- Durability: SBR degrades faster under repeated compression than natural polyisoprene. Synthetic latex mattresses typically have a shorter lifespan.
- Off-gassing: Synthetic latex emits more petrochemical VOCs initially. Natural latex has a characteristic rubber scent that fades quickly.
- Feel: Synthetic latex can feel similar to natural latex initially but loses its resilience faster.
- Environmental impact: Petroleum-based, unlike natural latex which is a renewable agricultural product.
