Body oils compound the problem. Sebum, the oily substance your skin produces, is rich in triglycerides and squalene. When bacteria metabolize these lipids, they produce additional odour compounds. The warmer and more humid the environment inside your mattress, the faster this bacterial activity proceeds.

Why it gets worse over time: Bacterial colonies do not simply wash away with surface cleaning. They establish themselves in the foam structure or fabric fibres of your mattress, where they continue metabolizing whatever organic matter reaches them. Each night adds a fresh supply of sweat, oils, and dead skin cells. Mould grows when three conditions converge: moisture, organic material (your mattress provides plenty), and limited airflow. Common scenarios that create mould-friendly conditions include placing a mattress directly on the floor without a bed frame, sleeping in a basement bedroom with high humidity, using a mattress without any air circulation underneath, or living in a home with poor ventilation during Canadian winters when windows stay sealed for months.

Health Canada states explicitly that there is no "safe" level of indoor mould exposure. Children, seniors, and people with asthma or severe allergies are particularly susceptible to the health effects of mould. If urine reaches the foam core of a mattress, it can be extremely difficult to fully remove because foam absorbs liquid like a sponge and holds it deep inside.

How to Fix Each Type of Smell

The right cleaning approach depends on what is causing the odour. Using the wrong method wastes time and can make things worse.

For bacterial odour (stale, body smell):

  1. Strip all bedding and wash it in hot water (60°C or higher kills bacteria).
  2. Vacuum the entire mattress surface with an upholstery attachment, paying attention to seams where dead skin accumulates.
  3. Sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) across the entire surface. Baking soda works because it is mildly alkaline, which neutralizes the acidic volatile fatty acids that bacteria produce. Leave it for a minimum of 4 hours, ideally overnight.
  4. Vacuum thoroughly to remove the baking soda.
  5. If the smell persists, lightly spray the surface with a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. The acetic acid in vinegar kills many odour-causing bacteria. Let it dry completely before remaking the bed.

For mould odour (musty, earthy):

Use a mattress protector from day one. A quality waterproof mattress protector creates a barrier between your body's moisture and the mattress interior. It is the single most effective thing you can do to prevent odour development. Wash it monthly in hot water.

Wash your sheets weekly. Sheets absorb the first wave of sweat, oils, and skin cells every night. Weekly washing in water at 60°C or higher kills bacteria and dust mites, preventing them from migrating to the mattress below.

Vacuum your mattress monthly. A quick pass with an upholstery attachment removes dust mite waste, dead skin cells, and surface debris before bacteria can establish colonies.

Ensure airflow underneath. Never place a mattress directly on the floor. A bed frame, platform base, or even a slatted foundation allows air to circulate under the mattress, preventing moisture buildup and mould. If you use a solid platform, check the underside of your mattress quarterly for moisture or mould spots.

Control bedroom humidity. Health Canada recommends maintaining indoor relative humidity between 30% and 50%. In Ontario winters, humidity often drops well below this range, which is actually helpful for mattress preservation. Summer humidity, especially in basements, is when mould risk increases. A dehumidifier in a basement bedroom during summer months is a worthwhile investment.

Air out your bed daily. Pull back your duvet and sheets when you get up and leave them pulled back for at least 20 minutes. This allows the moisture your body deposited overnight to evaporate rather than being trapped against the mattress surface.

When Cleaning Is Not Enough

Sometimes the honest answer is that cleaning will not solve the problem. Here are the signs that your mattress has reached the end of its useful life from an odour perspective:

The smell returns within days of deep cleaning. This means bacteria or mould have colonized the mattress interior where surface cleaning cannot reach. The organisms regrow and resume producing odour compounds almost immediately.

Visible mould that extends beyond the surface. If you find mould on the interior of the mattress (visible when you unzip a removable cover, for example), the contamination is too extensive for home cleaning.

Yellow or brown staining throughout the surface. Extensive staining indicates years of accumulated body fluids that have saturated the fabric and possibly the foam underneath. At this point, the mattress is a reservoir for bacteria, dust mites, and their waste products.

The mattress is over 8 years old and smells despite cleaning.
