Why Working From Home Makes You More Tired, Not Less
The promise of remote work was less commuting, more flexibility, and better energy. For many people, the opposite happened. Despite spending less time in transit and more time technically resting, remote workers consistently report higher levels of fatigue than their office-going counterparts.
A study published in Frontiers in Psychology tracked remote workers over two years using sleep trackers and electronic diaries. The researchers found that working from home persistently influenced both sleep quality and physical activity levels, with effects lasting well beyond the initial pandemic transition (Hallman et al., 2023). This is not a temporary adjustment problem. It is a structural issue with how remote work affects your body.
The fatigue has three interconnected causes, and your mattress is relevant to all three.
Cause 1: Sedentary Strain Without Physical Recovery
When you work from an office, you walk to the building, move between meetings, stand at the coffee machine, and generally accumulate incidental physical activity throughout the day. At home, many remote workers move from bed to desk to couch and back to bed, logging fewer than 2,000 steps on some days.
Research published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science found that prolonged sitting decreases spinal flexibility and increases muscle stiffness, effects that persist for hours after you stop sitting. A 2024 study in PLOS ONE examining Japanese white-collar workers found a significant association between prolonged sedentary behaviour (more than eight hours daily) and poor sleep quality.
Here is the connection to sleep: your body repairs the damage from daytime physical strain during deep sleep. NREM Stage 3 (slow-wave sleep) is when your pituitary gland releases the largest surge of human growth hormone (Sassin et al., 1969). This hormone drives tissue repair, muscle recovery, and cellular regeneration.
When you sit all day, your muscles stiffen, your back compresses, and your neck strains forward. Those micro-injuries need repair. But if your mattress does not support proper spinal alignment during sleep, the repair process is compromised. Instead of recovering, you wake up with the same stiffness you went to bed with, plus whatever new aches your mattress created.
Cause 2: The Boundary Collapse
When your bedroom is your office, your brain never fully transitions from work mode to rest mode. Sleep researchers call this conditioned arousal: your brain associates the bedroom environment with alertness, problem-solving, and stress rather than relaxation and sleep.
Research from Harvey (2002) published in the Journal of Sleep Research found that pre-sleep cognitive arousal (racing thoughts about work) is a stronger predictor of insomnia and poor sleep quality than physical discomfort or poor sleep hygiene. Remote workers are uniquely vulnerable to this because the physical cues that once signalled "work is over" (leaving the office, commuting home, changing clothes) no longer exist.
The result is lighter, less restorative sleep. You might spend 8 hours in bed but only get 5 to 6 hours of actual sleep, with reduced time in the deep sleep stages that drive physical recovery.
Cause 3: Temperature Dysregulation
A home office generates heat. Your computer, monitor, and desk lamp all produce warmth. If this equipment is in your bedroom, the room temperature can be 2 to 3 degrees warmer at bedtime than it would be without the electronics running all day.
Research published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology established that optimal sleep temperature is 15.6 to 19.4 degrees Celsius (Okamoto-Mizuno & Mizuno, 2012). Even a 2-degree increase above this range reduces time in deep sleep and increases nighttime awakenings.
Your mattress compounds this if it traps heat. Dense memory foam mattresses retain body heat, which can push your microclimate above the optimal range even if the room itself is cool enough. For remote workers whose bedrooms double as offices, this temperature issue is a double hit: the room starts warmer, and a heat-trapping mattress makes it worse.

- Cool your bedroom to 16 to 18 degrees before bedtime; open a window or use a fan to counteract daytime heat buildup
- Block light: Blackout curtains or a sleep mask to signal melatonin production
Physical Activity
- Walk before and after work to simulate a commute. Even 15 minutes replaces some of the incidental movement you lost.
- Stand or move every 45 to 60 minutes during work to prevent sustained spinal compression
- Exercise moderately in the afternoon to build sleep pressure for the evening. Research shows afternoon exercise improves both sleep onset and time in deep sleep.
Sleep Surface Optimization
- Evaluate your mattress: If it is older than 8 years, sagging visibly, or you wake up stiff and unrested, it is likely contributing to your fatigue rather than resolving it.
- Check your pillow: Cervical alignment during sleep is as important as lumbar alignment. A pillow that is too high or too flat forces your neck out of neutral, adding to the forward-head posture strain from daytime desk work.
- Consider a medium-firm hybrid: This provides the spinal support desk workers need plus the airflow that warm bedrooms require.
