The EMF concern is worth examining carefully, because the answer involves both what the science actually shows and what individual consumer priorities are -- and these are not always the same thing.
What Are EMF and Why Do People Care?
Electromagnetic fields are a form of energy produced by electrically charged objects. They exist on a spectrum from extremely low frequency (ELF-EMF), produced by power lines and household appliances running on standard electrical current, up through radio frequency (RF-EMF), produced by wireless devices, mobile phones, and wi-fi routers, and all the way to ionising radiation (X-rays, gamma rays) at the high end.
The concern most often associated with adjustable bases and household appliances is ELF-EMF -- the non-ionising, low-frequency fields produced by any device plugged into a standard 120V electrical outlet. These fields are always present when the device is plugged in, even when it is not actively operating, because the alternating current in the wiring produces a field that extends into the surrounding space.

Health Canada's position aligns with international scientific consensus: there is no convincing evidence of health effects from residential ELF-EMF exposure at the levels measured in typical homes. The World Health Organization reached similar conclusions in their Monograph on ELF fields published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, though ELF-EMF is classified as Group 2B ("possibly carcinogenic") based on limited epidemiological evidence -- a classification that includes many everyday substances and activities and does not indicate established risk.
Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity
Some individuals report symptoms they attribute to EMF exposure -- headaches, sleep disturbance, fatigue, skin sensations -- a condition sometimes called electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS).
