How firm should my mattress be?
Side sleepers: medium to medium-soft. Back sleepers: medium-firm. Stomach sleepers: firm. Heavier bodies (200+ lb): firmer. Lighter bodies (under 130 lb): softer. Combo sleepers: medium-firm. Lie on options at our Brantford showroom for 10+ minutes each.
What firmness is best for back pain?
Medium-firm is the safest choice. A 2015 Sleep Health study (Radwan et al.) found mattresses too soft OR too firm increased reported back pain. The middle ground supports the spine without creating pressure points.
Is firmer always better for your back?
No. Extra firm can cause pressure on shoulders and hips, especially for side sleepers. The right firmness keeps spine neutral — too firm pushes hips up, too soft lets them sag. Both misalign the spine.
How do you describe firmness from 1-10?
1-3: soft / plush. 4-5: medium-soft to medium. 6: medium-firm (most popular). 7-8: firm. 9-10: extra firm. Most adults sleep best between 5 and 7. Marketing-described 'medium' from one brand may be a 4 or a 6 — try in person.
Can a mattress break in over time?
Yes, modestly. Most foam mattresses soften slightly in the first 30 days. Hybrid coils don't soften — what you feel in week 1 is what you'll feel in year 5. If a mattress feels too firm after 30 days, it's not the right pick.
