Toddler bed vs twin bed: which to buy first?
Toddler bed uses the crib mattress and is the gentlest transition for kids 18-24 months. Twin bed is the longer-term investment — buy a quality twin mattress at the same time as the toddler transition and the mattress lasts through age 12+. We recommend going straight to twin for kids 2.5+ to save money.
What size mattress for a toddler?
Toddler bed: same as crib mattress (28 x 52 in approx). Twin: 38 x 75 in — most common for kids 2.5 years to early teens. Twin XL: 38 x 80 in — for tall kids who'll outgrow a regular twin.
How firm should a toddler mattress be?
Firmer than an adult mattress. Toddlers weigh less so a firm mattress provides better spine support without sinking. The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends firm flat surfaces. Avoid soft pillow-tops for kids under 12.
When should toddlers use a pillow?
From 18-24 months. Use a thin toddler pillow (10 x 14 in, low loft) — avoid full-size pillows until age 3+. Goose down and feather pillows wait until age 5+ to reduce allergy risk.
How do you transition a toddler to a bed?
Pick a quiet weekend. Keep bedtime routine identical (bath, books, lights out). Use bed rails for the first few weeks. Praise staying in bed. Some regression is normal — be consistent for 2-3 weeks.
