Mattress noise is a legitimate sleep disruptor, particularly for light sleepers and couples with different sleep schedules.
What most people do not realise is that the acoustic behaviour of a mattress is largely determined at the construction level -- by the type of spring system used, the density and composition of foam layers, and the surface fabric. Understanding these factors makes it possible to choose a mattress that is genuinely quieter, rather than guessing from marketing claims.
Why Mattress Noise Matters for Sleep
Sleep architecture involves cycling through lighter and deeper stages roughly every 90 minutes. During light sleep stages -- particularly Stage 1 NREM and REM -- the arousal threshold is lower. Sounds that would not register during deep sleep can cause brief awakenings during these lighter stages. For couples, a partner's movement creates both physical vibration (which disrupts through the mattress) and acoustic disturbance (which disrupts through the air).
A mattress that converts movement into noise amplifies both pathways of disturbance. The click or creak of springs is an airborne sound that can rouse a light sleeper.
