Tufting predates modern mattress manufacturing by centuries. The technique involves threading a long needle with cord through the full thickness of the mattress at regular intervals, then securing a rosette, button, or disc on each side. The cord, pulled taut, holds the internal layers together under compression.
In a properly hand-tufted mattress, a skilled worker places each tuft individually, adjusting tension by hand to ensure even distribution across the surface. The typical spacing on a queen mattress is 20 to 30 tufts per surface, though premium models use more.
The cord material matters. Natural fibre cords - wool, cotton, or jute - are used in traditional constructions and do not degrade chemically over time. Synthetic cords (nylon, polypropylene) are common in budget versions of hand-tufted mattresses and are not meaningfully different from machine tufting in terms of performance or longevity.
Recognising Genuine Tufting
Dorothy on our team has a quick check she does when examining a tufted mattress: she looks at the dimple pattern. Genuine hand-tufting produces slight variations in dimple depth and spacing because tension is set by hand. Machine tufting creates perfectly uniform depressions at completely consistent intervals. Neither is objectively better functionally, but the hand variation is a reliable indicator of actual hand work, which correlates with the quality of materials and attention to construction detail in the rest of the mattress.
Hand-Tufted vs Machine-Tufted vs Quilted
These three terms describe different methods of holding comfort layers to the mattress cover and each other:
Hand-Tufted
A worker threads cords through the full mattress depth and ties them under tension. Pulls the layers toward each other mechanically. No adhesive required. The mattress can sometimes be untufted and retufted if a layer needs replacement (though this is rare in practice).
Machine-Tufted
An automated process that replicates the mechanical action of hand-tufting. Faster and cheaper to produce. The functional result is similar to hand-tufting - layers are held mechanically rather than chemically - but the cord tension and placement are uniform rather than varied. Less common than it was before quilting technology improved.
Quilted
The cover fabric is sewn through one or more comfort layers in a pattern. This binds the cover to the top comfort layer but does not penetrate the full mattress depth. Additional layers below the quilted panel are typically adhered with adhesive. Most modern mattresses use quilted covers with glued internal layers.
From a durability standpoint, tufting (hand or machine) holds layers together through the full thickness more reliably than quilting alone, particularly in the long term as adhesives degrade.
Glue-Free Construction: What It Means
In most modern mattresses, foam layers are bonded to each other and to the cover using water-based or solvent-based adhesives. Glue-free construction eliminates these adhesives, relying instead on:
- Tufting: As described above, cords hold layers under compression without any chemical bonding.
- Friction and weight: In some latex mattresses, particularly those with multiple Dunlop or Talalay layers, the layers are simply stacked with no adhesive and held in place by the mattress cover (a zippered ticking that holds everything in position).
- Natural wool or cotton batting: Wool batting in particular can be felted slightly between layers, creating a mild mechanical bonding through fibre interlocking without any adhesive.
True glue-free construction typically requires either tufting, a zippered cover system, or both. A mattress claiming to be "glue-free" but using a conventional sewn cover with no tufting warrants closer examination - the layers have to be held together somehow.
Why Layer Adhesion Method Affects Durability
Adhesive bonds between foam layers fail through two primary mechanisms:
Chemical Degradation
Most mattress adhesives are polyurethane-based. Over time, UV exposure, oxidation, and the constant compression-decompression cycle of normal mattress use causes these adhesives to become brittle. The foam layers begin to shift relative to each other, which creates an uneven sleeping surface and accelerates localised foam fatigue.
Heat and Moisture
Body heat and moisture that pass through a mattress affect adhesive bond strength. Water-based adhesives are particularly susceptible to moisture-driven degradation. In humid climates or for people who sleep warm, adhesive bonds can degrade faster than the foam or latex materials they are holding together.
Tufted and glue-free constructions avoid both failure modes. The cord or mechanical constraint holds layers together through the life of the material without chemical degradation. This is one of the genuinely functional advantages of hand-tufted construction: the mattress may outlast its adhesive-bonded equivalent by several years under the same use conditions.
Off-Gassing and Chemical Concerns
Off-gassing refers to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from mattress materials, particularly foam and adhesives. New mattresses typically produce the highest VOC levels in the first few days to weeks after unboxing, with levels declining as the more volatile compounds dissipate.
In a glue-free mattress, the primary off-gassing sources are the foam or latex materials themselves. These vary significantly by material:
- Natural latex (certified Dunlop or Talalay): Very low VOCs. OEKO-TEX or GOLS certified latex has been tested and certified against a list of harmful substances.
- Certified organic wool and cotton: Negligible VOCs. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified materials are tested.
- Standard polyurethane foam: Higher VOC potential, primarily from residual catalysts and blowing agents. CertiPUR-US certification indicates testing for specific VOC limits.
- Adhesives (conventional mattresses): Additional VOC source that glue-free construction eliminates entirely.

VOCs and Sleep Quality
Bedroom air quality has a documented relationship with sleep quality. Studies have linked VOC concentrations in bedroom environments with sleep disturbances and respiratory effects, particularly in sensitive individuals. While the mattress is not the only VOC source in a bedroom, it is a significant contributor and one that can be controlled through material selection.
Does the Price Premium Hold Up?
Hand-tufted and glue-free mattresses typically carry a price premium of 15 to 40 percent over conventionally constructed mattresses using similar core materials. Whether that premium is justified depends on what you are actually getting:
When the Premium Is Worth It
- The tuft cord is natural fibre (wool, cotton) rather than synthetic.
- The glue-free claim is supported by a zippered removable cover or visible tufting - not just a marketing statement.
- The underlying materials (latex, wool, cotton) are certified organic or OEKO-TEX certified.
- The mattress can be re-layered or repaired rather than replaced entirely (some high-end glue-free latex mattresses offer this).
When the Premium Is Less Justified
- Machine tufting is marketed as "hand-tufted" or the distinction is not disclosed.
- The glue-free claim applies only to the cover-to-comfort-layer bond but not to internal layer bonding.
- The core material is standard polyurethane foam (which itself off-gasses) in a "glue-free" construction - the adhesive saving is minor relative to the foam's own VOC contribution.

The steel coils in a hybrid can be recycled through metal recycling regardless of how the rest of the mattress is constructed. Conventional foam and adhesive mattresses have very limited recycling options.
Is off-gassing from a new mattress actually harmful?
For most healthy adults, VOC off-gassing from a new mattress causes temporary irritation (headache, eye irritation) at most, particularly in the first few days. The risk is higher for people with asthma, chemical sensitivities, MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity), or for infants and young children who spend more time in contact with the mattress surface. If chemical sensitivity is a concern, airing a new mattress for 48 to 72 hours in a well-ventilated area before use significantly reduces exposure.
