A trial period defines the window during which you can initiate a return. The return policy defines the conditions, costs, and process of that return. A retailer can offer a 120-night trial and still charge a 20 percent restocking fee, a $100 return shipping cost, and require the product to be in original packaging with no signs of use beyond normal testing.

For a $1,250 adjustable base, a 20 percent restocking fee is $250. Add $100 to $200 for return freight on a 70 to 120 pound item, and your "risk-free" return costs $350 to $450. That is not risk-free. That is a significant financial penalty for trying something that did not work out.

Restocking fee: Many retailers charge 10 to 20 percent of the purchase price. On a $1,500 base, that is $150 to $300.

Return shipping: Adjustable bases are heavy and bulky. LTL (less than truckload) freight shipping for a 100-pound item from Ontario to a distribution centre can cost $100 to $300 depending on distance. Some retailers cover return shipping. Many do not.

Endy: 30-night trial on their adjustable base. More restrictive than their 365-night mattress trial, which reflects the higher logistics cost of returning a base.

Leva Sleep: Offers a trial period with specific conditions. As a specialist adjustable bed brand, their policies are designed for the product category.

Online marketplace sellers (Amazon, Wayfair): Return policies vary by individual seller. Amazon's standard 30-day return window may apply, but return shipping on a heavy item is often the buyer's responsibility. Third-party sellers on these platforms may have their own policies that differ from the marketplace standard.

Brick-and-mortar retailers: Most do not offer trial periods on adjustable bases because you test the product in the showroom before purchasing.
