But the marketing around adjustable beds can be overwhelming. "Zero gravity," "anti-snore," "wall-hugging," "dual motor," "whisper quiet." What actually matters? What has clinical evidence behind it? And what is just a feature name designed to justify a higher price tag?

The name comes from NASA. During launch, astronauts experience extreme g-forces. NASA engineers determined that a specific body position, with the torso reclined to roughly 120 degrees and the knees bent above heart level, distributed pressure most evenly across the body and reduced cardiovascular strain.

On an adjustable bed, "zero gravity" means raising both the head section (to about 30 to 45 degrees) and the foot section (knees elevated above heart level) simultaneously. The result is a position where your spine is in a neutral curve, your weight is distributed across a larger surface area, and gravity's compressive effect on your lower back is reduced.

What Zero Gravity Does to Your Body

The clinical benefits of this position are supported by research across several conditions:

  • Spinal decompression: With knees elevated and the torso slightly reclined, the lumbar spine opens. Disc pressure drops. People with sciatica, spinal stenosis, or chronic lower back pain often report immediate relief
  • Circulation: Elevating the legs above heart level assists venous return. Blood flows more easily through the heart muscle. Physicians recommend this position for patients with heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure

  • Swelling and edema: Post-surgical patients and people with chronic leg swelling benefit from sustained leg elevation during sleep

Brad has a straightforward way of demonstrating this in our Brantford showroom. "I put people in the zero gravity position and ask them to close their eyes for two minutes. Multiple studies have tested head-of-bed elevation (HOBE) at different angles:

Finding Your Anti-Snore Angle

Start at the lowest elevation setting your base offers (usually 5 to 7 degrees). Sleep at that angle for 3 to 5 nights. If snoring persists, increase slightly. Most people find relief between 10 and 15 degrees. Going higher than needed can cause neck discomfort. Ask your partner to note whether snoring intensity or frequency decreases. That real-world feedback is more useful than any sensor.

The motor is the most important mechanical component of your adjustable base, and the one you will hear the least about in marketing materials. It determines how smoothly the bed moves, how quietly it operates, how long it lasts, and whether replacement parts will be available in ten years.

Adjustable beds use linear actuators: electric motors that convert rotational motion into linear (push/pull) movement via a spindle mechanism. Three manufacturers dominate the market.

The Big Three Motor Manufacturers

  • OKIN (DewertOkin): The largest by volume. German engineering heritage, now headquartered in China. Invented the double drive actuator. Push force up to 6,500 N per section. Found in most major brand adjustable bases including many Leggett and Platt models. Wide OEM adoption means parts are generally available, but specific models are not cross-compatible. You need the exact model number for replacements
  • LINAK: Danish company, founded 1979. Known for exceptionally low noise operation and energy efficiency. Their ZERO standby technology draws no power when the bed is not moving. How a linear actuator works is straightforward: an electric motor spins gears connected to a threaded spindle. The spindle nut travels outward or inward along the spindle, pushing or pulling the bed frame section. A high thread count with smaller spindle pitch means slow movement but high lifting capacity. A low thread count with higher pitch means faster movement but lower capacity.

For home use, the practical differences come down to noise, speed, and longevity. A LINAK-powered base will typically be quieter than an OKIN-powered one at the same price point. An OKIN base will have more readily available replacement parts because of its market dominance. LOGICDATA bases tend to arrive in smaller boxes and assemble faster, which matters if you are ordering online.

What to Ask When Shopping

Most salespeople will not know what motor brand is inside an adjustable base. That is normal. But you can ask these questions:

What is the lifting capacity in newtons? (Anything above 5,000 N per section is adequate for most adults.) Is the motor covered by warranty separately from the frame? (It should be, 3 to 5 years minimum.) Does the base have a wall-hugging feature? (This shifts the base backward as the head rises, keeping your bedside table within reach.) Is Bluetooth or app control included, or is it remote only?

Choosing the Right Adjustable Base

Adjustable bases come in split and unified configurations. Split means each side of a split king adjustable bed moves independently, so one partner can raise their side while the other stays flat. Unified means the entire sleeping surface moves together.

  • Memory foam: Fully compatible. Flexes easily without structural damage. Good pairing for adjustable bases
  • Latex (natural or blended): Fully compatible. Latex is naturally flexible and resilient. Excellent pairing
