Quick Answer: Air Mattresses
Air mattresses are useful for temporary situations only: overnight guests, camping, and emergency bedding. They are not suitable for daily sleep. Even the best air mattress does not provide the spinal support, pressure relief, or durability of a real mattress. For guest use, a quality raised air mattress with a built-in pump ($80-200) is perfectly comfortable for a few nights. For camping, get one rated for outdoor use with appropriate insulation. If you are sleeping on an air mattress every night because of budget, a $200-400 mattress-in-a-box is a far better investment for your health.

When Air Mattresses Make Sense

- Overnight guests (1-3 nights): The most common use. A raised air mattress with good flocking is comfortable enough for short stays. Much better than a couch or floor
- Camping: Insulated air mattresses designed for outdoor use provide cushioning and insulation from cold ground. Essential for comfortable camping in Canadian weather
- Temporary housing: Moving to a new home before your furniture arrives, renovation displacement, or emergency housing. Weeks, not months
- Kids sleepovers: Inexpensive, easy to set up, fun for kids. The limited support is less of an issue for young, lightweight bodies
- Travel: Some air mattresses fit in a duffel bag for travel to destinations without a proper bed
Features That Matter
What to Look For
Built-in pump (Essential): Internal electric pump inflates in 3-5 minutes and allows firmness adjustment with a button. External hand pumps are tedious and imprecise. Every quality air mattress should have a built-in pump.
Raised height (18+ inches): Raised air mattresses are easier to get in and out of. They feel more like a real bed and less like sleeping on the floor. Standard height (9-12 inches) works for camping or kids.
Flocked top: A soft fabric surface (flocking) prevents sheets from sliding and is more comfortable against skin than bare vinyl. All good air mattresses have this.
Internal structure: Coil-beam construction (internal air coils) prevents the bowling-ball effect (rolling to the centre). Look for independently supported sections.
Puncture resistance: Multi-layer vinyl or PVC construction reduces puncture risk
. Keep away from pet claws and sharp objects.
Weight capacity: Check the weight rating. Standard air mattresses support 300-600 lbs depending on size and construction. Exceeding the rating accelerates leaks.
How to Choose by Use Case
- Home guest use: Queen-size raised air mattress with built-in pump, flocked top, coil-beam interior. $80-200. Intex, SoundAsleep, and King Koil make reliable models. Store deflated in a closet
- Camping: Insulated sleeping pad or air mattress rated for outdoor temperatures. R-value of 3+ for Canadian three-season camping, 5+ for winter. Brands: Therm-a-Rest, Sea to Summit, Klymit. $60-200
- Budget daily use (temporary): If you must use an air mattress as your primary bed temporarily, choose the thickest, most structured model available and add a mattress topper for support. But replace with a real mattress as soon as possible
Why Air Mattresses Are Not for Daily Sleep
The Reality
Air provides uniform pressure with no zoned support. Your spine is not supported properly because air pushes back equally everywhere. Heavier areas (hips) sink deeper, creating sp
inal misalignment. Air mattresses lose pressure overnight (all of them, even new ones), so you start firm and wake on a partially deflated surface. Temperature regulation is poor. The surface sleeps cold in winter (air inside cools) and warm in summer. Durability is measured in months, not years, for daily use. Punctures, seam failures, and pump failures are inevitable. For the price of a good air mattress ($150-200), you can buy an entry-level real mattress that provides proper support for years.

Why does my air mattress deflate overnight?
All air mattresses lose some air overnight. Temperature drops cause air to contract (smaller volume = less firm). Micro-leaks at seams and valve are normal. This is a fundamental limitation of air as a support medium. Top up the pressure before bed and accept that some deflation will occur.
Can two people sleep on an air mattress?
Yes, on a queen-size. However, the rolling-together problem is more pronounced on air mattresses than real mattresses. When one person moves, the air shifts and the other person is affected. Models with internal coil-beam structure reduce this but do not eliminate it.
How long does an air mattress last?
For occasional guest use: 2-5 years. For daily use: 3-6 months before significant issues. The pump is usually the first component to fail, followed by seam integrity. Keep the warranty documentation.
Is sleeping on an air mattress bad for your back?
For a few nights, it is fine for most people. For daily use, the lack of zoned support causes or worsens back pain in most people. Air provides equal pressure everywhere, which means it does not support the lumbar curve or accommodate shoulder and hip prominences the way a real mattress does.
