Au Lit Fine Linens: An Honest Canadian Bedding Review

If you have ever searched for luxury bedding in Canada, you have come across Au Lit Fine Linens. The Toronto-based company has been in business since 1981, which makes them one of the longest-running specialty bedding retailers in the country. That kind of longevity tells you something. Bedding companies that sell overpriced products on marketing alone do not survive four decades.

But "premium quality" and "worth it for you" are two different questions. Au Lit Fine Linens makes legitimately excellent bedding. Their prices reflect that quality. Whether those prices make sense for your household depends on factors this review will help you sort through.

We sell bedding at Mattress Miracle in Brantford, so we are not a direct competitor to Au Lit (our price points and product categories differ). This review is meant to give you an honest assessment, including things the company's own website will not tell you.

Company Background

Au Lit Fine Linens was founded by Peggy Byron in Montreal in 1981 as a small bed linen boutique. The name "Au Lit" translates from French to "In Bed," which is about as direct as a bedding company name gets. The company grew through the 1980s and 1990s, eventually consolidating its retail operations in Toronto.

Today, Au Lit operates from a 10,000 square-foot flagship showroom on Yonge Street in Toronto's Davisville neighbourhood. They source cotton from Egypt's Nile Delta, have it woven in Italy, and finish the products at their Toronto facility. Their down pillows and duvets are filled in Canada using Downmark-certified goose down.

This hybrid sourcing model (Egyptian cotton, Italian weaving, Canadian finishing) is worth understanding because it explains both the quality and the price. Each step in the supply chain adds cost, but it also adds quality control. Au Lit inspects every product that passes through their Toronto facility, and much of the finishing work is done by hand.

Product Range and Pricing

Au Lit's product line covers sheets, duvets, pillows, blankets, protectors, loungewear, and bath textiles. Here is what you can expect to pay.

Sheets

These are not typos. A queen set of their top-tier 800 thread count percale sheets can exceed $1,200. Even their entry-level Basic Percale starts around $250 for a queen set. For context, a quality mid-range cotton sheet set in Canada (from brands like Simons Maison or Endy) typically costs $100-$180.

Down duvets and pillows

Au Lit's down products are a core strength. Their goose down duvets use 650+ fill power down in 100% cotton sateen shells, and everything is filled and finished in Canada. Pillow prices start around $100 for a standard goose down pillow and go up from there. Duvets range from roughly $300 to $800 for a queen, depending on fill weight and warmth level.

All down products are Downmark certified, which means the fill comes from birds that were not live-plucked or force-fed. This certification matters if ethical sourcing is important to you, and it is increasingly important to Canadian consumers. A 2024 survey by the Canadian Down and Feather Association found that 71% of Canadian buyers now check for ethical sourcing certifications when purchasing down products, up from 43% in 2019.

Blankets and accessories

Their 100% cotton fleece blankets are popular and priced more accessibly than their sheets ($80-$200 for a queen). They also carry cashmere throws ($400+), cotton waffle blankets, and bath linens. The accessory range is where Au Lit offers some of their better value propositions relative to the sheet pricing.

What Au Lit Does Well

Material quality is genuine

This is not a case of a brand charging premium prices for average products with fancy packaging. Au Lit's Egyptian cotton sheets are genuinely high quality. The fabric is woven at established Italian mills (the same mills that supply European luxury hotels), and the finishing in Toronto ensures consistent quality. If you have ever stayed at a five-star hotel and wondered why the sheets felt so much better than yours at home, Au Lit's mid-range and up collections deliver that hotel-quality feel.

Canadian manufacturing and jobs

Their Toronto facility employs Canadians for finishing, quality control, and fulfilment. In an industry where most bedding is made entirely overseas, Au Lit's partial Canadian manufacturing is worth acknowledging. The company has been transparent about their supply chain, which builds trust in an industry where "made in Canada" claims can sometimes be misleading.

In-person shopping experience

The Yonge Street showroom is one of the best bedding shopping experiences in Canada. Staff are knowledgeable (not just trained to upsell), the product displays let you touch and compare fabrics, and the space is designed to help you make informed decisions. If you have the opportunity to visit, it is worth the trip for anyone serious about upgrading their bedding.

Down expertise

Au Lit has been working with goose down since the 1980s. Their knowledge of fill power, shell construction, and down processing is deep. If you are looking for a quality down duvet or pillow and want expert guidance, Au Lit is one of the few Canadian retailers where the staff can explain the difference between 550 and 650 fill power in practical terms, not just marketing language.

Where Au Lit Falls Short

No brand is without limitations. Here is what we think Au Lit could do better, and what you should know before buying.

Pricing excludes most Canadians

Let us be straightforward: most Canadian households cannot justify $400-$1,200 on a set of sheets. The average Canadian household spends approximately $150-$250 per year on all bedding combined, according to Statistics Canada consumer spending data. Au Lit's entry-level sheet set costs more than many families' entire annual bedding budget. This is not a criticism of the quality, which justifies the price for those who can afford it. It is simply an acknowledgment that Au Lit serves a specific market segment.

Return policy is restrictive

Au Lit does not accept returns on duvets, down blankets, pillows, protectors, or featherbeds. At all. For hygienic reasons, they say. Other items must be in original packaging, unwashed, and unused. Items discounted 25% or more are final sale.

Compare this to Brooklinen's 365-day return policy or Boll and Branch's 30-day trial. When you are spending $500+ on a duvet, the inability to return it if it does not meet your expectations is a significant risk. This is the strongest argument for buying from Au Lit in person rather than online: you can at least feel the products before committing.

Limited physical presence

One showroom in Toronto is not much to work with for a national brand. If you live outside the GTA (and most Canadians do), your only option is buying online sight unseen, which brings us back to the return policy issue. The original Montreal store is no longer operational, and there are no plans we are aware of for expansion into other Canadian cities.

Thread count marketing

Au Lit sells an 800 thread count percale sheet set for over $1,200. While the quality is real, thread count above 400 is widely regarded in the textile industry as having diminishing returns. The International Fabricare Institute has noted that thread counts above 400-500 provide minimal perceptible improvement in feel or durability for most consumers. Research published in AATCC Review (2018) confirmed that consumer perception of softness plateaus at approximately 400-500 thread count in single-ply weaves. Au Lit's 800 thread count sheets may genuinely feel marginally nicer, but the $600+ premium over their 220 thread count sheets may not deliver $600 worth of additional comfort.

The Davisville showroom is a 10,000 square-foot space that feels more like a curated home than a retail store. Beds are made up with complete bedding sets so you can see and feel how everything works together. The staff are trained bedding specialists rather than general retail employees, and they can guide you through thread counts, weave types, down fill power, and sizing with genuine expertise.

If you are driving from Brantford, Hamilton, or elsewhere in southwestern Ontario, it is roughly a 90-minute drive. Worth it if you are planning a significant bedding purchase. Not worth it for a single pillowcase.

Online shopping

Au Lit's website is well-designed and their product descriptions are more detailed than most Canadian bedding retailers. They ship across Canada, with delivery times typically running 3-7 business days for most of Ontario. Shipping is free on orders over a certain threshold (check their site for current minimums, as these change periodically).

The online experience is good but cannot replace the in-store experience for bedding. This is true of any bedding retailer, not just Au Lit. We have written about the in-store vs online debate for bedding purchases and the research consistently shows higher satisfaction for in-person purchases.

Return Policy and Customer Service

This is the section that matters most for online buyers.

Customer service gets consistently positive reviews on Yelp and Google. Staff are described as knowledgeable and helpful, and the company responds to issues professionally. The 1-800 number connects you to Canadian representatives, not an overseas call centre.

Our honest opinion on the return policy: it is understandable for pillows and duvets (hygienic concerns are legitimate), but the "original packaging, unwashed" requirement for sheets means you cannot actually sleep on them before deciding. You are buying based on the feel of the fabric in your hands, not on how it performs over a night's sleep. This is where a physical store visit becomes especially valuable.

How Au Lit Compares to Other Canadian Brands

Au Lit occupies a unique position: they are the only Canadian luxury bedding brand with a physical showroom, Canadian finishing operations, and a 40+ year track record. The closest competitor in the luxury tier would be Boll and Branch, but they are a US company shipping across the border.

For most Canadians on a reasonable budget, Simons Maison and Linen Chest offer strong quality at more accessible price points. Endy and Silk and Snow target the value-conscious buyer with Canadian-designed products and generous trial periods. Au Lit targets buyers who want the best available materials and are willing to pay for them.

Who Should Buy from Au Lit

Au Lit is a good fit if you:

• Have a bedding budget above $500 for a queen sheet set
• Value genuine Egyptian cotton and Italian weaving
• Prefer Canadian-finished products with transparent sourcing
• Can visit the Toronto showroom or are comfortable buying premium items online
• Want down duvets and pillows with Downmark ethical certification
• Appreciate expert guidance and personalised service

Au Lit is probably not for you if:

• You are on a typical household bedding budget ($100-$250/year)
• You want to try sheets for several nights before committing
• You live far from Toronto and prefer buying bedding in person
• You are looking for trendy designs (Au Lit leans classic and understated)
• You need flexible return policies for online purchases

There is no shame in deciding Au Lit is not in your budget. Plenty of good sleep happens on $100 cotton sheets from Linen Chest or Simons. The mattress and pillow underneath matter far more than the thread count of your sheets, which brings us to our final point.

The Mattress Under the Sheets

Here is something Au Lit will not tell you, because it is not their business to: the best sheets in the world cannot fix a bad mattress. If you are spending $600 on sheets but sleeping on a 12-year-old mattress with a 2-inch body impression, your sleep will not meaningfully improve. The sheets will feel nice to the touch, but the underlying support problem remains.

We see this regularly at Mattress Miracle. Someone invests in premium bedding, then wonders why they still wake up with back pain. The answer is almost always the mattress. A study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine (2011) found that replacing a mattress older than 9 years resulted in significant improvements in sleep quality, back comfort, and morning pain levels. No sheet set, regardless of price, can replicate that improvement.

The ideal approach: invest proportionally. If you are going to spend $800 on Au Lit sheets, make sure the mattress underneath deserves them.
