Hosts also tend to drink more slowly (too busy to keep up) but eat more sporadically (a bite here, a sample there, never a proper meal). The fragmented eating pattern keeps your digestive system running constantly without ever producing a satisfying meal signal.
And the host can't leave. You're the last one standing by definition. The cleanup that follows the last guest's departure adds another 30-60 minutes of physical activity right before bed.
The Guest's Problem
Guests have the opposite challenge: too little structure. Without the responsibilities of hosting, guests tend to drink more consistently, eat whenever food appears, and lose track of time because they have nowhere else to be. If you're going to bed around midnight, that gives your liver 4 hours to clear the alcohol. Nobody notices if you switch to soda water at 8 p.m. And if they do notice, that's their problem, not yours.
Eat the Main Meal Before 7 p.m.
When the host says "food at 5" and it's 6:30 and nothing is on the grill yet, eat something anyway. Bring a snack. Have some of the appetizers. Get calories in early. Then when the main meal arrives at 7:30, you can eat a smaller portion. The goal is to have your heaviest eating done by 7 p.m. at the latest, giving your stomach 4-5 hours before bed.
Leave by 10:30

Are non-alcoholic beers and mocktails actually better for sleep?
