Bamboo Foam Mattress: What It Really Is (2026)

Quick Answer: A bamboo foam mattress is a memory foam mattress with either a bamboo-derived fabric cover or bamboo charcoal infused into the foam layers. The foam itself is still polyurethane. Bamboo covers offer better breathability and moisture wicking than polyester. Bamboo charcoal helps with odour absorption. Neither changes the fundamental feel or support of the memory foam underneath.

What "Bamboo" Actually Means in a Mattress

When you see a mattress labelled as a bamboo foam mattress, the bamboo is not the structural material. No manufacturer is building foam cores out of bamboo. The foam is polyurethane, the same base material used in standard memory foam, gel memory foam, and most bed-in-a-box mattresses.

The bamboo part refers to one of two things: the outer fabric cover, or an additive mixed into the foam during manufacturing. Sometimes both. Understanding which one you are getting changes what benefits you can actually expect.

Brad, Owner, 40+ years of experience: "Bamboo is one of those words that sounds natural and premium, and companies know that. I have seen mattresses labelled 'bamboo' where the only bamboo is a thin cover over completely standard foam. That does not make it a bad mattress, but customers should know what they are paying for."

Three Types of Bamboo Mattresses

Bamboo Foam Mattress

1. Bamboo Fabric Cover Over Memory Foam

This is the most common type. The mattress itself is a standard memory foam or hybrid design. The outer cover, the zippered or sewn-on fabric you see and touch, is made from bamboo-derived rayon (also called bamboo viscose). This fabric is softer than polyester, absorbs moisture more readily, and feels cooler to the touch.

The bamboo cover does genuinely affect how the mattress feels against your skin and how well it manages moisture. It does not change the support, firmness, or pressure relief characteristics of the foam layers underneath. Think of it like a nicer shirt on the same body.

2. Bamboo Charcoal Infused Memory Foam

In this type, bamboo is burned at high temperatures to create activated charcoal, which is then ground into a fine powder and mixed into the polyurethane foam during production. The resulting foam looks grey or dark compared to standard white or yellow memory foam.

Activated bamboo charcoal is porous at a microscopic level. This porosity gives it the ability to absorb moisture, odours, and some volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Independent laboratory testing has shown that bamboo charcoal can reduce formaldehyde levels by up to 85% in controlled settings and adsorb certain VOCs from the surrounding air.

In a mattress, the charcoal's primary practical benefit is odour control. New foam mattresses produce a chemical smell during off-gassing, and bamboo charcoal can reduce the intensity and duration of that smell. Whether it meaningfully improves temperature regulation is debatable, as the foam itself is still the primary determinant of heat retention.

3. Hybrid: Bamboo Cover + Bamboo Charcoal Foam

Some manufacturers combine both approaches: a bamboo viscose cover with bamboo charcoal infused foam layers. This is the most expensive option and, in fairness, the most comprehensive use of bamboo in a mattress. You get the moisture-wicking cover and the odour-absorbing foam.

Type Where the Bamboo Is Primary Benefit Price Range (Queen)
Bamboo cover Outer fabric only Softer feel, moisture wicking $400-$800
Bamboo charcoal foam Infused into foam layers Odour absorption, reduced off-gassing $500-$1,000
Both Cover and foam Combined benefits $700-$1,500

Real Benefits vs. Marketing Claims

Bamboo mattress marketing tends to lean heavily on words like "natural," "eco-friendly," and "antimicrobial." Some of these claims hold up. Others are more complicated than the advertising suggests.

Breathability: Partially True

Bamboo-derived rayon is more breathable than polyester. The fibre structure is hollow, which allows air and moisture to pass through more easily. A bamboo cover will feel cooler to the initial touch than a polyester cover. However, the cover is only the outermost layer. Once your body heat penetrates into the memory foam below, the foam's own heat retention properties take over. If the foam is dense and slow-responding, the cover alone will not keep you cool through the night.

What Research Shows About Bamboo Fabric

A 2012 study published in the Journal of the Textile Institute found that bamboo viscose fabric had higher moisture absorption and faster moisture release than comparable polyester fabrics, confirming its moisture management advantage. However, the same study noted that bamboo viscose's mechanical properties (strength and abrasion resistance) were lower than polyester, meaning bamboo covers may wear out faster under heavy use (Erdumlu and Ozipek, Journal of the Textile Institute, 2012).

Antimicrobial: Complicated

Raw bamboo fibre does have natural antimicrobial properties. But by the time bamboo has been processed into rayon through chemical dissolution, most of those natural properties are gone. The Canadian Competition Bureau and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission have both taken action against companies that marketed bamboo rayon as having natural antimicrobial properties without qualification.

That said, some bamboo mattress covers are treated with antimicrobial agents during manufacturing. The protection is real, but it comes from the treatment, not from the bamboo itself.

Eco-Friendly: It Depends

Bamboo is a remarkably fast-growing plant that requires no pesticides and uses less water than cotton. On the growing side, it is genuinely sustainable. The issue is in processing. Converting bamboo into rayon fibre involves sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide, chemicals that require careful handling and can cause environmental damage if not managed properly.

Closed-loop production processes like those used for lyocell (Tencel) recover and reuse over 99% of these solvents. Standard viscose processing recovers less. Unless the manufacturer specifies their processing method, "eco-friendly bamboo" is an incomplete claim.

Hypoallergenic: Mostly Marketing

Any clean, new mattress with a tightly woven cover is relatively resistant to allergens. Bamboo does not have a special advantage here unless you are specifically choosing an encasement-style cover that physically blocks dust mites. The hypoallergenic label on a bamboo mattress usually means "tightly woven fabric," which is true of many non-bamboo covers as well.

Bamboo Labelling in Canada

In Canada, the Competition Bureau requires that textiles be accurately labelled under the Textile Labelling Act. If a fabric has been chemically processed from bamboo into rayon or viscose, it must be labelled as "rayon from bamboo" or "viscose from bamboo," not simply "bamboo." This distinction matters because it tells you the fibre has been chemically processed and may not retain the properties of raw bamboo.

If you see a mattress marketed as "100% bamboo" in Canada, check the actual label. In most cases, the fabric is bamboo-derived rayon, which is a different product with different properties than raw bamboo fibre.

Dorothy, Sleep Specialist: "I think bamboo covers are genuinely nice to sleep on. They feel soft, they handle moisture well, and many of our customers prefer them over polyester. But I always tell people that the cover is the least important part of a mattress decision. The foam density, the coil system, the support layers, those are what determine whether you sleep well for the next 10 years."

Who Should Consider a Bamboo Foam Mattress

A bamboo foam mattress is a reasonable choice in certain situations.

Hot sleepers who want a foam mattress. If you have decided on memory foam but worry about heat, a bamboo cover offers a modest improvement over polyester. It is not a magic solution for hot sleeping, but it is one small factor that helps. Pairing it with bamboo charcoal foam adds another incremental improvement.

People sensitive to new mattress smell. Bamboo charcoal infused foam does reduce the intensity and duration of off-gassing odour. If you are someone who notices chemical smells easily, this is a legitimate benefit.

Shoppers who prefer softer cover textures. Bamboo rayon has a silky, smooth feel that many people find more pleasant than polyester knit. If the tactile quality of the cover matters to you, bamboo delivers.

Eco-conscious buyers (with caveats). If sustainability factors into your purchase and you choose a manufacturer that uses closed-loop processing, a bamboo mattress can be a greener choice than a fully synthetic one. Just verify the processing method.

Alternatives Worth Considering

If the features that drew you to a bamboo foam mattress are breathability, natural materials, or temperature regulation, there are other options worth comparing.

Natural Latex

Latex is inherently more breathable than memory foam because of its open-cell structure. Natural latex (from rubber trees) is sustainable, durable (often lasting 15+ years), and does not trap heat the way dense memory foam does. It is also more expensive.

Innerspring or Hybrid with Natural Cover

A traditional innerspring or hybrid mattress with coils allows air to flow freely through the core, making it naturally cooler than any all-foam design. Our Restonic collection includes models with natural fibre covers, including the Luxury Silk and Wool at $2,395 (queen) with 884 zoned coils and silk and wool comfort layers for natural temperature regulation.

Gel Memory Foam

If cooling is your main concern and you want to stay with foam, gel-infused memory foam is a more established technology for heat management. The gel beads absorb and distribute body heat more effectively than standard foam. Many gel memory foam toppers are available if you want to add cooling to an existing mattress without replacing it.

Copper-Infused Foam

Copper is a thermal conductor that pulls heat away from the body surface. Some manufacturers use copper-infused foam in their comfort layers for temperature regulation. Our Restonic Revive Tiffany Rose and Jasmine models use Talalay Copper Latex, combining natural latex responsiveness with copper's cooling properties, at $2,995 for a queen.

What to Look for if You Buy One

If you have decided a bamboo foam mattress is right for you, here are the specifications that matter most.

  • Foam density of at least 1.8 lb/ft³ in the base layer. This determines durability. Anything under 1.5 lb/ft³ will develop impressions within two years.
  • CertiPUR-US certification. Confirms the foam meets safety standards for harmful chemicals and VOC emissions.
  • Clear labelling of bamboo content. Look for "rayon from bamboo" or "bamboo viscose" in the materials list. If the listing just says "bamboo" without qualification, ask the manufacturer for specifics.
  • Charcoal concentration, if applicable. Some manufacturers add only trace amounts of bamboo charcoal and market the product heavily on it. There is no standard concentration, so a higher percentage is generally better for odour control.
  • A trial period. Because bamboo covers feel different from polyester, try to buy from a brand that offers at least a 30-night trial so you can confirm you like the feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a bamboo foam mattress actually made of bamboo?

Not entirely. The foam itself is polyurethane-based, the same material as any memory foam mattress. The bamboo component is either in the fabric cover (bamboo-derived rayon or viscose) or infused into the foam as bamboo charcoal powder. No mattress on the market has a foam core made from bamboo.

Do bamboo mattresses sleep cooler than regular memory foam?

Bamboo-derived fabric covers do sleep slightly cooler than polyester covers because the fibre is more breathable and wicks moisture better. Bamboo charcoal infused foam may have a marginal cooling advantage over standard foam, but the difference is modest. The biggest factor in mattress temperature is still the foam type and density, not the bamboo component.

Is bamboo rayon the same as natural bamboo fibre?

No. Bamboo rayon (also called bamboo viscose) is a semi-synthetic fibre made by dissolving bamboo pulp in chemicals and regenerating it into thread. The process strips away most of the natural antimicrobial properties of raw bamboo. The FTC in the United States and the Competition Bureau in Canada require products to be labelled as "rayon from bamboo" rather than simply "bamboo" if they have been chemically processed.

How long does a bamboo foam mattress last?

About the same as any foam mattress: 7 to 10 years depending on foam density, body weight, and care. The bamboo component (cover or charcoal infusion) does not significantly affect the overall lifespan. The foam density of the support core is the best predictor of durability.
