Bed Bugs in Hotels: How to Check Your Room and Protect Your Home

You check into a hotel after a long day of driving. The room looks clean. The bed is made. You drop your suitcase on the bed, kick off your shoes, and collapse onto the pillows. This is the exact sequence of mistakes that makes bed bug problems worse. Not the hotel's fault, necessarily, but a set of habits that most travellers have and most travellers regret if those tiny insects happen to be present.

Bed bugs do not discriminate by hotel quality. Five-star resorts and budget motels are both susceptible. The difference is usually how quickly the hotel responds, not whether the problem exists.

The 5-Minute Hotel Room Inspection

This takes less time than unpacking and can save you weeks of dealing with an infestation at home.

1. Put your luggage in the bathroom. Bed bugs rarely inhabit tile floors and bathtubs. Leave your bags there until you have inspected the room.
2. Pull back the sheets. Check the mattress seams, particularly at the corners and along the piping. Look for tiny brown or reddish-black spots (fecal stains), shed exoskeletons that look like translucent husks, or live bugs about the size of an apple seed.
3. Check the headboard. If it is mounted to the wall, look behind it if possible. If it is attached to the bed frame, check the joints and crevices. Bed bugs prefer tight spaces near where humans sleep.
4. Inspect the nightstand. Pull out the drawer. Check the underside and back panel. Bed bugs hide in furniture joints during the day and emerge at night.
5. Check upholstered furniture. Lift cushions, check seams, look in the crevices of armchairs. If the room has a fabric headboard, run your fingers along the seams.

If everything looks clear, you can unpack. If you find anything suspicious, do not stay in the room. Ask for a different room that is not adjacent or directly above or below the original one.

What to Do If You Find Them

Finding bed bugs in a hotel room is unpleasant but manageable if you act immediately:

• Do not move your luggage to the new room until it has been inspected. If bugs have gotten into your suitcase, you are just transporting the problem.
• Photograph the evidence. This protects you if you need to dispute the hotel charge or file a complaint.
• Request a room on a different floor. Bed bugs can travel between adjacent and vertically connected rooms through wall voids and electrical conduit.
• Inform the front desk calmly. Hotels deal with this more often than they admit. Professional exterminators are the standard response. Most reputable hotels will offer a refund or room upgrade.

Protecting Your Home After Travel

The real concern with hotel bed bugs is not the bites you get during the trip. It is bringing them home.

• Inspect your suitcase outside or in the garage before bringing it into your home. Check seams, pockets, and zippers.
• Wash all clothing on hot (at least 60°C / 140°F) and dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes. Heat kills bed bugs at all life stages.
• Vacuum your suitcase thoroughly, then dispose of the vacuum bag in an outdoor bin.

It is difficult to say how often hotel rooms have bed bugs. Estimates vary widely and hotels understandably do not publish the data. What is clear is that inspecting before you unpack costs nothing and protects everything.
