You can have the best mattress in the world and still sleep terribly if the building next door decides to do construction at 6 a.m., your upstairs neighbour has a dog, or the couple down the hall argues with their door open. Noise is one of the most underestimated disruptors of sleep quality.
At Mattress Miracle, we hear this regularly. Talia gets questions from apartment renters about how to deal with noise before they even get to the mattress conversation. "I'd say once a week someone comes in and says the real problem isn't their mattress, it's their building," she told us. "Sometimes it's both."
This guide covers two streams: what renters can do without a drill, and what requires permission. It also explains why noise disrupts sleep at a level most people don't expect, and what role the mattress itself plays in the noise equation.
Why Noise Disrupts Sleep
The sleeping brain is not passive. It continuously monitors the environment and responds to sounds even when you're not consciously aware of it. This is an evolutionary holdover from when waking up quickly to a threat was literally life-or-death. It's less useful in a Brantford apartment building.
The WHO Numbers
The World Health Organization recommends nighttime outdoor noise levels below 40 dB(A) to avoid sleep disturbance. Above that threshold, EEG research shows measurable cortical arousal reactions. At 55 dB(A), studies find significant sleep architecture disruption including shifts to lighter sleep stages, body movements, and full awakenings. To put that in context: a quiet bedroom conversation is roughly 40 to 50 dB. Typical street traffic through an open window easily reaches 60 to 70 dB.
What's most relevant for sleep is that noise doesn't have to wake you fully to damage sleep quality. Micro-arousals happen when the sleeping brain briefly activates in response to sound, shifting from deep sleep to light sleep or brief wakefulness, and then returns to sleep without you remembering it. Nights with many micro-arousals feel like poor sleep even when your total time in bed is unchanged. You wake up feeling unrested without knowing why.
The physiological mechanism is cortisol. Noise triggers a stress response that releases cortisol and adrenaline, hormones meant to prepare the body for action. During sleep, repeated cortisol spikes suppress the slow-wave and REM stages where physical recovery and memory consolidation happen. Over time, chronic nighttime noise exposure is associated with elevated blood pressure, cardiovascular strain, and cognitive impairment.
Renter-Safe Solutions
The most effective renter-safe approach is adding mass and absorption to the room's surfaces without any permanent changes. Sound travels through air and through solid materials. The more mass and absorbent surface area between you and the noise source, the less reaches your ears.
Be honest with yourself about what this will achieve. Renter-safe methods can meaningfully reduce high-frequency noise (voices, TV, dog barking) and soften the impact of intermittent sounds. They will not block low-frequency noise like bass music, mechanical vibration, or heavy footsteps. For those problems, you need structural solutions or a different building.

Acoustic Panels with Command Strips
Acoustic foam panels absorb sound rather than blocking it. They reduce the reflections and reverb inside the room, which can make noise feel less harsh and reduce echo. They don't create a sound barrier against outside noise, but they do improve the acoustic quality of the room itself, making the noise that does come through feel more muffled.
Hang them on the wall shared with the noise source. A cluster of 4 to 6 panels on that wall will have more effect than the same panels scattered around the room. Command strips can hold lightweight foam panels, but check weight limits: most command picture-hanging strips handle 1 to 2 kg per set. Heavy panels may need more strips or a different approach.
Heavy Curtains and Blackout Panels
Thick curtains do double duty: they reduce light entry (relevant if you've read our guide to blackout curtains for sleep) and they add a soft, mass-loaded barrier over the window, which is often the weakest point in any wall from a sound-transmission standpoint. Even sealed, windows are thin and have frames with gaps.
For maximum noise reduction, use full-length curtains that extend from ceiling to floor and several centimetres past the window frame on each side. Velvet or heavy cotton-polyester blends work better than lightweight sheers or linen. Double-layering (a heavy outer curtain over a denser blackout liner) adds meaningful absorption.
Area Rugs with Dense Underlayment
Hard floors transmit impact noise in both directions. If you're bothered by noise from below, a thick area rug with a dense rubber or felt pad absorbs some of the vibration before it reaches you. If you're on the ground or second floor and trying to reduce transmission to your own bedroom from outside or adjacent spaces, rugs covering the floor area near the noise source wall help absorb airborne sound.
The denser the pad, the more effective. Thin foam underlays compress easily and lose effectiveness. Look for pads rated for sound attenuation; they're marketed as such in flooring stores.
Door Draft Seals and Door Sweeps
Bedroom doors are often hollow-core in rental apartments: they're cheap, light, and nearly transparent to sound. The gap at the bottom of the door alone can transmit 30 to 40 percent of sound that would otherwise be blocked by the door slab. A self-adhesive door sweep costs less than $20 and can make a noticeable difference for hallway and common area noise.
Weatherstripping tape along the sides and top of the door frame seals additional gaps. For noise from hallways specifically, this is often the most impactful single change a renter can make.
Bookshelves as Sound Mass
Dense, book-filled shelving placed against a shared wall adds mass and absorption without any modification to the wall itself. This is one of the oldest and most underrated noise reduction strategies in apartment living. A floor-to-ceiling bookshelf filled with books adds significant mass to the wall assembly, reduces vibration transmission, and absorbs sound on your side of the room.
The heavier and denser the bookshelf contents, the more effective. DVDs and lightweight decor objects do little. Real books, dense objects, and fabric-covered items help more.
Permanent Solutions
The following options deliver meaningfully higher noise reduction but require permission from your landlord. If noise is severe enough to affect your health and tenancy quality, this is a reasonable conversation to have, particularly if the noise issue is something the landlord should want to fix.
Mass-Loaded Vinyl (MLV)
MLV is a dense, flexible material that's hung on walls (or sandwiched in a wall assembly) to add mass without significant thickness. It's the most effective non-structural noise barrier available for interior walls. Installing it on a rental wall requires attaching it, which means holes or adhesive damage, so landlord approval is necessary.
MLV is heavy: typical material runs 3 to 5 kg per square metre. A wall-sized installation requires proper anchoring. Done correctly, it can reduce airborne sound transmission by 15 to 20 dB, which is quite significant.
Acoustic Caulk
Acoustic caulk seals gaps around electrical outlets, pipe penetrations, and window frames where sound travels through small openings. These gaps are often overlooked but can be responsible for a surprising amount of sound transmission. Acoustic caulk remains flexible after drying (unlike standard caulk, which cracks as walls shift) and fills these paths permanently.
Solid-Core Door Replacement
Replacing a hollow-core bedroom door with a solid-core equivalent is the single most effective door upgrade for noise. The difference in sound isolation is dramatic. Most landlords will agree to this if you offer to keep the original door and re-install it on move-out.
Window Acoustic Inserts
Secondary glazing inserts, which are panels of glazing mounted on the inside of your existing window frame, create a dead air gap that reduces sound transmission by 60 to 70 percent compared to a single-pane window, and around 50 percent compared to a double-pane. They're removable and don't require permanent modification to the window or frame, which puts them in a grey area between renter-safe and requiring permission.
White Noise: Complement, Not Cure
White noise machines and apps are widely used for sleep in noisy environments, and the research supports them for specific situations. The mechanism is masking: a continuous, broadband sound covers the silence between noise events, reducing the contrast that triggers arousal. The brain responds more to sudden changes in sound level than to steady background noise, so filling in the silence can reduce how often intermittent noises wake you.
What the Research Shows
A study by Ebben and colleagues found that white noise improved sleep quality and duration in subjects exposed to high-noise urban environments. The effect was more consistent for falling and staying asleep than for overall sleep architecture. White noise works best for intermittent, unpredictable noises, such as traffic, voices, and mechanical sounds. It is less effective for loud, low-frequency sounds that exceed the masking level or for impact noise like footsteps.
White noise is a complement to structural noise reduction, not a substitute. At volumes loud enough to mask external noise effectively, white noise itself can affect sleep quality. The recommended level for sleep masking is 40 to 50 dB. Above that, you're trading one noise problem for another.
The Mattress and Motion Noise Problem
When people think about noise and sleep, they focus on external sound. But there's a source of sleep disruption that lives inside the bed: mechanical noise from the mattress and base itself, and motion transfer from a sleeping partner.
Older innerspring mattresses with interconnected coils transmit both movement and mechanical squeak across the sleep surface. Every time your partner rolls over, the wave of motion travels to your side. Some older mattresses also develop squeaks in the coil assembly or box spring that are triggered by movement at night. This is a form of noise disruption that affects sleep quality the same way environmental noise does.
Modern individually wrapped coil designs, like those in the properly supported queen bed frames we carry, isolate motion so that movement on one side doesn't travel to the other. Pocket coil construction reduces both lateral motion transfer and mechanical noise from coil interaction. Memory foam eliminates coil noise entirely, though it has its own set of trade-offs around temperature and responsiveness.
A squeaky bed frame is worth investigating too. Tightening bolts and adding felt pads at contact points between metal components often eliminates squeaks that are attributed to the mattress. If the mattress is the source, that's a different conversation, but the frame is usually worth checking first.
