All three uses share a common feature. Advertising music is engineered to grab attention. The tempo is fast, usually between 110 and 140 beats per minute. The harmony is major key. The structure is short, hook-forward, and repetitive. Every musical decision pushes the listener toward arousal, not rest.

That is the opposite of what music needs to do to help you fall asleep. A 2025 narrative review in Frontiers in Sleep pooled the features of music shown to aid sleep across dozens of studies. The consensus was clear. Slow tempo, soft timbre, instrumental, minimal lyrics, stable structure. Advertising music fails every one of those tests.

The 60 to 80 BPM rule

The Frontiers in Sleep review and a 2025 PLOS One meta-analysis on music therapy both converged on the same tempo window. Music between 60 and 80 BPM aligns with a resting heart rate of roughly 60 to 80 beats per minute. Music above 100 BPM did the opposite in controlled trials, shortening sleep time in some participants.

A slow 65 BPM piano piece nudges it downward.

The 2025 meta-analysis on music therapy in older adults reported an overall improvement in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores with slow-tempo interventions. The dosing that worked best was 30 to 45 minutes of listening in the hour before bed, at a comfortable volume below 50 decibels.
