The US Environmental Protection Agency regulates antimicrobial agents under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. Health Canada uses the Pest Control Products Act for similar oversight in Canada.
Here is the catch. Most consumer sheets are sold under what the EPA calls the "treated article exemption." That exemption allows a product to be marketed as antimicrobial as long as the claims are limited to protecting the article itself, typically meaning odour control and preservation of the fabric. The product does not have to prove that it protects you from illness. As soon as a brand starts claiming public-health benefits ("kills flu viruses," "prevents skin infections"), the product must be registered as a pesticide, and almost no consumer sheet brand does that paperwork.
What this means in practice: when a sheet is advertised as "reducing 99.9% of bacteria," that usually refers to a laboratory test on a piece of fabric in controlled conditions. It does not mean the sheets prevent skin infections, reduce acne, or protect immunocompromised people in your household. The language is technically accurate and the marketing is often written to suggest more than it legally can.

Peer-reviewed studies on antimicrobial textiles (for example the 2024 paper in ACS Omega by Afshari et al., and ongoing ESKAPE-pathogen research) demonstrate that silver- and copper-infused fabrics reduce bacterial counts on the fabric itself. They do not demonstrate consistent health outcomes for healthy adults using the sheets at home. Where sheets have shown real benefit is in specific clinical settings, not general residential use.
How Each Technology Actually Works
There are four broad categories of antimicrobial treatment in residential sheet sets. Understanding the mechanism helps you judge which is worth paying for and which is marketing dressed as science.
Silver ion treatments. The fabric is either woven with silver fibres, coated with silver nanoparticles, or treated with silver ions via a binding agent. When bacteria contact the silver, the ions disrupt their cell walls and metabolic pathways. Silver is the best-documented antimicrobial in textiles and is what you will find in clinical linens at hospitals. Polygiene is the most common brand-name silver treatment in consumer sheets. Efficacy typically holds through 50 to 100 wash cycles, depending on the binding method.
Copper ion treatments. Similar mechanism to silver but with slightly different microbial activity. Copper is particularly effective against fungi and some viruses, which is why it has been studied for healthcare applications. Consumer-grade copper sheets are usually copper-infused bamboo or copper-woven polyester blends. Efficacy after repeated washing varies by brand; some studies show meaningful degradation after 30 to 40 washes.
Bamboo viscose and bamboo biochar. Bamboo fibre itself has a compound called bamboo kun that has mild antimicrobial activity in raw bamboo. Whether that activity survives the chemical processing required to turn bamboo into viscose fabric is contested. Some manufacturers (ettitude is the most prominent) infuse their sheets with bamboo biochar, a charcoal-like carbon material that absorbs odour-causing compounds and provides some antimicrobial action. The National Sleep Foundation and most dermatologists recommend washing sheets weekly in water at least 54 degrees Celsius (130 degrees Fahrenheit) to kill most household bacteria and dust mite populations.
A pair of cotton sheet sets you rotate weekly costs CA$60 to $120 total and performs extremely well when actually washed on schedule. The real-world failure mode is not sheet technology; it is people not washing sheets often enough.
