Quick Answer: Deep pocket sheets have fitted-sheet corners tall enough to cover mattresses 13 inches thick or more. True deep pocket runs 15 to 17 inches; extra deep pocket runs 18 to 22 inches. Measure your mattress including any topper before buying, look for all-around elastic rather than corner-only, and add at least 2 inches of slack over your actual mattress depth so the sheet stays on overnight. Most modern Restonic mattresses (14 to 15 inches) fit true deep pocket; a 15-inch model plus a 3-inch topper requires extra deep pocket.

How to Measure Your Mattress for Sheet Depth
Before buying sheets, measure what you have. This sounds obvious, but the most common cause of sheets that come off overnight is buying based on guessed rather than measured mattress depth.
The measurement that matters for fitted sheets is the total height of the mattress from the bottom of the ticking to the top of the comfort layer, measured with the mattress sitting on its foundation. Here is how to do it accurately.
- Strip the mattress completely. Remove all sheets, protectors, and toppers temporarily.
- Use a rigid tape measure. Cloth tape can sag; a metal tape gives an accurate reading.
- Measure at a corner, not the centre. The corner is the structural edge and reflects the true thickness the fitted sheet needs to accommodate.
- Press the comfort layer gently flat, but do not compress it heavily. Measure what the mattress looks like at rest, not under pressure.
- Add your topper. If you use a mattress topper, put it back on and measure the combined thickness. This is what the fitted sheet actually has to cover.
- Add 2 inches for slack. Buy a fitted sheet with pocket depth at least 2 inches greater than the mattress-plus-topper depth. Without slack, the sheet stretches tight and the corners are prone to slipping off overnight.
Why slack matters. A fitted sheet's elastic stretches to hold the sheet against the mattress. When the sheet is at the edge of its stretch range, any body movement during sleep can yank a corner free. Extra pocket depth provides slack that absorbs motion without losing the grip. Sheets labelled as fitting "up to 18 inches" typically work well on 15 to 16 inch mattresses.
Regular, Deep, and Extra-Deep Pocket Ranges
The sheet industry uses three general depth categories. Manufacturers do not always follow the same labelling, so always check the specific pocket depth number.
| Category | Pocket Depth | Best For Mattress Height |
|---|---|---|
| Standard pocket | 8 to 12 inches | Older mattresses up to 11 inches, thin futons |
| Deep pocket | 13 to 17 inches | Most modern mattresses (12 to 15 inches) |
| Extra deep pocket | 18 to 22 inches | Thick mattresses, or mattress plus topper combinations |
| Super deep pocket (specialty) | 22 to 24 inches | Premium pillow-top, adjustable-base-compatible mattresses with toppers |
Modern Canadian mattresses have grown measurably thicker over the past two decades. A queen mattress from 2000 typically measured 9 to 11 inches. A queen from 2020 onward usually measures 12 to 15 inches, and flagship models reach 16 inches. This is why standard-pocket sheets routinely fail on contemporary mattresses.
Mattress Plus Topper: The Hidden Depth Problem
This is the detail that surprises most customers. Mattress toppers add meaningful thickness that is often not factored into sheet purchases.
Typical topper thicknesses:
- Thin foam or fibre topper: 1 to 2 inches
- Standard latex or memory foam topper: 2 to 3 inches
- Premium topper for pressure relief: 3 to 4 inches
- Feather bed topper: 3 to 5 inches (compressed and variable)
A 14-inch mattress with a 3-inch memory foam topper is effectively a 17-inch bed. A deep-pocket sheet rated for 15 inches will be stretched past its comfortable limit and will fight you every night. Extra-deep-pocket sheets are the right choice here.
We hear this complaint monthly. A customer buys a lovely set of sheets for their new Restonic ComfortCare, finds the sheets slip off because they added a cooling topper they forgot to factor in, and returns frustrated. The solution is almost always to replace the sheets with extra-deep-pocket versions, not to remove the topper.
Talia, Showroom Specialist: "I always ask customers buying sheets whether they are planning to add a topper to their mattress, because the combined depth determines which pocket size they need. Customers who buy sheets with a topper already installed are usually fine. Customers who buy sheets first and add a topper later often end up needing a second sheet set. Planning the combined depth up front saves a shopping trip."
Elastic Types: All-Around vs Corner-Only
The elastic on a fitted sheet holds it against the mattress. Not all elastic is the same.
Corner-only elastic (cheaper) puts elastic only at the four corners, with plain fabric along the long edges. Works acceptably on thinner, rectangular mattresses. Tends to let the middle of the sheet drift on thicker mattresses because there is no tension along the sides.
All-around elastic runs continuous elastic around the entire perimeter of the sheet. Holds the sheet tight against all four sides. Essential for deep and extra-deep pocket sheets, where the weight of fabric and the depth of stretch put more demand on the elastic system.
Heavy-duty elastic (premium) uses thicker, more durable elastic material that maintains tension over more wash cycles. The difference is usually not visible out of the package but becomes obvious after 50 to 100 washes, when cheaper elastic loses its springiness while heavy-duty elastic is still firm.
For deep pocket sheets, always choose all-around elastic. Corner-only elastic on a thick mattress is almost guaranteed to disappoint within a year.
Restonic Mattress Thicknesses for Reference
Because Restonic is our main mattress line, here are the current thicknesses to help you choose the right sheet pocket depth.
| Restonic Model | Mattress Height | Recommended Sheet Pocket |
|---|---|---|
| Restonic ComfortCare | Approximately 12 inches | Deep pocket 14-inch works well; 16-inch for topper use |
| Restonic Revive Reflections ET (flippable) | Approximately 13 to 14 inches | Deep pocket 15-inch, or 18-inch with topper |
| Restonic Luxury Silk & Wool | Approximately 14 inches | Deep pocket 16-inch, or 18-inch with topper |
| Restonic Revive Tiffany Rose / Jasmine | Approximately 14 to 15 inches | Deep pocket 17-inch, or 18+-inch with topper |
| Restonic Revive St Charles / Elizabeth | Approximately 15 inches | Extra-deep pocket 18-inch minimum |
These are approximate and can vary slightly by batch. Measure your specific mattress with a tape to confirm before ordering sheets. Most Canadian bedding retailers will accept returns if the sheets do not fit, but an accurate measurement saves time.
What Goes Wrong with Wrong-Sized Sheets
Using a fitted sheet whose pocket is too shallow for the mattress produces predictable problems.
- Corner pop-off. The most common failure. Corners lose their grip and work free during the night, leaving a rumpled sheet half off the mattress. Waking up with the fitted sheet bunched around your feet is the signature symptom.
- Centre drift. The sheet migrates from the centre of the mattress outward, leaving the middle exposed and the edges overlapped. Uncomfortable against skin and inelegant when you make the bed.
- Elastic fatigue. Over-stretched elastic loses its springiness permanently within months, making the sheet unusable long before its fabric has worn out.
- Seam stress. Constantly stretched fabric puts strain on the stitched corners, which can blow out (split at the seam) after enough cycles.
If your fitted sheet fits too tightly or keeps coming off, the fix is almost always a new sheet with the right pocket depth rather than any workaround. Sheet suspenders, fasteners, or corner clips are available but usually band-aids for an underlying size mismatch.
A useful way to tell if your sheets are too small. Make the bed. Lie down. Roll over a few times as you would during sleep. If any corner of the fitted sheet pops off within two minutes of testing, the pocket is too shallow for your mattress. Replace rather than trying to force the fit.
Materials That Hold Pocket Shape
Some fabrics hold their fitted-sheet shape better than others, even when the pocket depth is appropriate.
Long-staple cotton percale. Holds shape well because the fibres resist stretching beyond their woven dimensions. Good for deep-pocket sheets.
Bamboo lyocell. Slight natural elasticity that accommodates body motion without losing tension. Works well on thick mattresses.
Cotton sateen. Smoother and slightly stretchier than percale. Can drift more than percale on very thick mattresses unless the elastic is heavy-duty.
Microfibre. Very stretchy, which is both a feature (conforms to odd mattress shapes) and a drawback (loses tension faster than natural fibres). Budget option that rarely lasts as long.
Jersey knit. Highly stretchy, T-shirt-like. Holds to the mattress through stretch rather than tension, but the surface wrinkles and bunches under body weight. Often fine for casual use, less ideal for thick mattresses.
Flannel. Slightly shrinks with washing, so buy one pocket-depth size larger than you think you need if you plan on hot-washing for warmth.
Dorothy, Sleep Specialist: "The customers who are happiest with their sheets are usually the ones who thought about the mattress-plus-topper combined depth before shopping, chose all-around elastic, and spent enough to get reasonable-quality cotton or bamboo. Twenty dollars more per sheet set often means three extra years of use. It is not glamorous advice but it consistently holds up."
Frequently Asked Questions
My mattress is 12 inches thick. Do I need deep pocket sheets?
Not necessarily. Standard pocket sheets often accommodate up to 12 or 13 inches. But if you plan to add a topper, even a thin one, deep pocket becomes necessary. When in doubt, buy the deeper option; an extra inch of pocket depth does not hurt, but insufficient pocket does.
Are deep pocket sheets more expensive?
Slightly, though the difference is smaller than most people assume. A queen deep-pocket sheet set typically costs CA$15 to $40 more than an equivalent standard-pocket set in the same fabric. Extra-deep-pocket sets add another $20 to $50. The difference is worth it for sheets that actually fit.
Can I use sheet suspenders to make shallow sheets work on a thick mattress?
Temporarily yes, long-term no. Suspenders hold the corners down but constantly strained elastic still fails. Better to buy sheets that genuinely fit than to prop up undersized ones with accessories. See our sheet suspenders guide for situations where suspenders do help.
Do I need deep pocket sheets on an adjustable base?
Yes. Adjustable bases require sheets that stay put while the mattress bends. All-around elastic plus adequate pocket depth is essential. Some manufacturers offer "adjustable base compatible" sheet sets specifically for this use case.
What happens if my pocket is too deep?
Usually nothing serious. The sheet is just slightly loose around the mattress, which can produce small wrinkles under your body. Better than the alternative of constantly popping off corners. If the pocket is dramatically too deep (say, an extra-deep sheet on a 10-inch mattress), you may want to size down; the sheet will bunch visibly.
