Put a rainstorm playlist on a Bluetooth speaker at 10 p.m. and most adults will drift off within fifteen minutes. Put the same person outside during an actual hurricane and they will not sleep at all. Same acoustic content, opposite outcome. That paradox is genuinely interesting, and the reason behind it explains something useful about how sleep audio works in general.

What the research says
A 2017 study by Cassandra Gould van Praag and colleagues at the University of Sussex, published in Scientific Reports, used heart-rate variability and fMRI scans to measure autonomic nervous-system response during listening to naturalistic sounds (including rain and thunder) versus artificial sounds. Natural sounds produced a measurable shift toward parasympathetic activation, the "rest and digest" side of the autonomic nervous system, along with outward-directed attention rather than inward rumination.
A 2024 systematic review in Sleep Medicine Reviews reached similar conclusions about nature soundscapes as a sleep adjunct, with the strongest effects for steady rain and moderate wind.

Thunder was specifically included in the study's natural-sound condition. The participants showed parasympathetic activation even to thunder, which is the counterintuitive finding. Thunder on a recording is not "scary" to the nervous system the way it is in a tent at 3 a.m.
The attention-direction finding is worth lingering on. In the Sussex study, artificial sounds pulled participants' attention inward, toward self-reflection and rumination. Natural sounds, including thunder and rain, pulled attention outward, toward the acoustic environment. That outward pull is actually the fundamental thing we want before sleep, because the inward-directed attention of rumination is what keeps most anxious adults awake past midnight. A good rain track is not just quieter than silence. It is quieter than your own thoughts.
This also helps explain why white noise from a fan works for some sleepers and not others. A fan is artificial, not natural, so it does not produce the same outward-attention effect. For people whose insomnia is mostly environmental (a loud street, a snoring partner), white noise is enough. For people whose insomnia is mostly cognitive (racing thoughts, work stress), natural sounds are usually more effective.
Why recorded storms calm and real storms do not
