Polyester fill springs back immediately. Latex bounces back with a rubbery feel. Down shifts and rustles when you squeeze it.
Machine-Washable Toppers: What You Need to Know
Even when a topper is machine washable, there are practical considerations that most care labels do not mention.
Size Matters
A king-size polyester topper will not fit properly in a standard home washing machine. Cramming it in means the topper cannot move freely during the cycle, so it will not wash evenly and the spin cycle may not extract enough water. Use a commercial-size front-loading machine at a laundromat for anything larger than a twin or double.
Front-Loader vs. Top-Loader
Front-loading machines are gentler because they tumble the laundry rather than twisting it around a central agitator. If you only have access to a top-loader with an agitator post, use the most delicate cycle available and check the topper for damage afterward. The agitator can tear stitching, particularly on quilted toppers.
Drying Is the Hard Part
Washing is relatively straightforward. Drying is where things go wrong. Toppers retain a lot of moisture and take much longer to dry than regular laundry. A queen-size polyester topper may need two or three dryer cycles on low heat. Check it between cycles, fluff by hand, and make sure the centre is completely dry before putting it back on the bed.

If you own a memory foam, latex, or wool topper, machine washing is off the table. That does not mean you are stuck with a dirty topper. Spot cleaning, when done properly, handles most issues.
The Baking Soda Routine
This is the single most effective maintenance technique for foam toppers. Strip the bed, sprinkle baking soda liberally across the topper surface, and leave it for 8 to 12 hours. The baking soda absorbs moisture, neutralises odours, and draws out oils. Vacuum it off with a soft brush attachment. Do this every two to three months, or whenever the topper smells stale.
Targeted Stain Treatment
For stains on foam, mix a tablespoon of mild dish soap with two cups of cool water. Dampen a clean white cloth (not the foam) and dab the stain. Do not pour liquid directly onto the foam. Work from the edges of the stain inward. Blot dry with a fresh cloth. Let the area air dry completely.
For biological stains like urine or blood, use an enzymatic cleaner designed for pet stains. These products break down organic proteins without harsh chemicals. Apply sparingly and blot dry.
Dealing with Bigger Messes
If a large area of your foam topper is soaked from a spill, there is no quick fix. Press dry towels firmly into the foam to absorb as much liquid as possible. Then stand the topper on its side near a fan. It may take 24 to 48 hours to dry fully. Do not use heat sources like hair dryers or space heaters, as direct heat damages foam.
