Solid wood: The furniture component is made from a single species of wood throughout its thickness, not a veneer over a core. A solid wood dresser drawer front is maple (or oak, or pine) all the way through. You can sand, refinish and repair a solid wood piece. Solid wood expands and contracts with humidity changes, which is normal and expected.
Hardwood veneer on plywood: A thin layer (0.5-3mm) of attractive wood is bonded to a plywood core. Plywood is stronger than particleboard and less prone to moisture damage. Quality hardwood veneer on plywood is a legitimate furniture construction method, used by many reputable manufacturers. The visual result can be identical to solid wood.
MDF (medium-density fibreboard): Wood fibres and resin pressed into dense boards. It's dimensionally stable (doesn't expand and contract with humidity), smooth for painting, and cheap. Its weaknesses: heavy, doesn't hold screws well under repeated stress, and swells dramatically when exposed to moisture. Most IKEA furniture uses MDF core with a paper veneer or lacquer finish.
Particleboard: Lower density than MDF, made from wood chips and resin. The cheapest core material. Poor screw retention, very susceptible to moisture, heaviest for its strength. Common in budget furniture.
