Chinese mattresses and Canadian mattresses are built differently, sized differently, and sold differently. If you walked into a Canadian mattress store expecting to find a 1.8 metre bed with a firm coconut fibre mattress, you would leave confused.

This guide helps Chinese newcomers understand the Canadian mattress market so you can make a confident purchase. The Chinese 1.5m bed is almost identical in size to a Canadian Queen. If you slept on a 1.5m bed in China, a Queen will feel very familiar in terms of space. The Canadian Queen is just 2 cm wider and 3 cm longer.

The Chinese 1.2m bed has no Canadian equivalent. If you are used to this size, you will need to choose between a Twin (which is narrower) or a Double (which is wider). For a single adult, we usually recommend the Double because the extra width makes a real difference in comfort.

The Chinese 1.8m King is slightly narrower than the Canadian King (180 cm vs 193 cm). Canadian Kings give you an extra 13 cm of width, which means more room for couples who do not like touching while sleeping.

Canadian mattresses are also shorter by about 10 cm for the Twin size but 3 cm longer for the Queen and King. This matters most for very tall individuals.

Queen or Double: Which Size Should You Choose?

This is the most common question from Chinese newcomers. In China, the 1.5m bed is the standard couple's bed. In Canada, you have two close options: the Double (137 x 190 cm) and the Queen (152 x 203 cm). Which one should you buy?

Choose Queen If:

• You are a couple sharing the bed. The Queen gives each person 76 cm of width, which is comfortable for two adults.
• Your bedroom is at least 10 x 10 feet (3 x 3 metres). A Queen fits comfortably with walking space on both sides.
• You want to match your 1.5m bed experience from China. The Queen is the closest Canadian size.
• You plan to stay in Ontario long-term. The Queen is the standard adult size in Canada, and sheets and accessories are the most widely available.

Choose Double If:

• You are a single adult and want more room than a Twin but do not need a Queen.
• Your bedroom is small (less than 10 x 10 feet). The Double saves about 15 cm of width compared to the Queen.
• You are on a tight budget. Doubles cost less than Queens at every quality level.
• You are furnishing a spare bedroom for occasional use.

For most Chinese couples settling in Ontario, the Queen is the right choice. It matches the familiar 1.5m bed experience, fits standard Canadian bed frames and bedding, and provides enough space for two adults to sleep without bumping into each other.

Firmness Preferences for Chinese Families

Chinese mattress culture generally favours firm sleeping surfaces. The traditional Chinese belief is that hard beds are better for your back and overall health. Many Chinese newcomers to Ontario are surprised by how soft Canadian mattresses feel, especially the pillow-top and euro-top models that are popular in North American stores.

The Chinese Firmness Standard

In China, mattresses commonly contain coconut coir (palm fibre), firm latex, or high-density foam. Many also include a layer of coconut coir with springs underneath. The result is a sleeping surface that rates about 7 to 9 on a 10-point firmness scale, where 10 is a wooden board.

Canadian mattresses, by comparison, tend to sit in the 4 to 7 range. A "firm" Canadian mattress is about a 7, which is roughly the starting point for Chinese firmness preferences. A Canadian "medium" mattress is a 5 to 6, which most Chinese newcomers would call soft.

Canadian mattresses rarely use coconut coir. The closest Canadian alternative in terms of firmness is a firm innerspring mattress with minimal comfort layers or a firm latex mattress.

Latex Mattresses

Natural latex is popular in China for its firmness and durability. Canadian latex mattresses are available but less common than innerspring or foam options. They are also more expensive, typically $1,500 to $3,000 for a Queen. The pocket coil design means each spring moves independently, which reduces motion transfer between sleepers. This is a genuine improvement over traditional Bonnell coil systems.

Memory Foam

Memory foam is available in both countries. It moulds to your body shape, which provides excellent pressure relief but can feel unfamiliar if you are used to sleeping on a firm, flat surface. Memory foam also retains body heat, which some people find uncomfortable. If you have never slept on memory foam, test it in person before buying.

Setting Up Your Bedroom in an Ontario Home

Chinese and Canadian bedroom layouts have different conventions. Understanding these differences helps you set up a comfortable sleeping environment.

Bed Placement and Feng Shui

Many Chinese families consider feng shui when placing their bed. Common principles include not positioning the bed directly facing the door, not placing the bed under a window, and not sleeping with your feet pointing toward the door. Ontario bedrooms vary in layout, but most rooms have enough flexibility to accommodate these preferences.

Measure your bedroom before buying a mattress. Standard Ontario master bedrooms are typically 11 x 13 feet (3.4 x 4 metres) or larger, which comfortably fits a Queen or King with room for nightstands. Secondary bedrooms range from 9 x 10 to 10 x 12 feet, which fit a Double or Queen depending on furniture placement.

Heated Kang vs Canadian Beds

If you come from northern China, you may have slept on a kang (heated brick platform). There is no Canadian equivalent, but you can replicate warmth with an electric mattress pad or heated blanket. Smart Buying Strategies

Test before buying. This is the most important advice for any newcomer. Canadian mattress firmness labels do not correspond to Chinese standards. What feels "firm" in a Canadian store may feel "medium" by Chinese standards. Spend at least 10 minutes lying on a mattress before deciding.

Prioritize the main bed. If you are buying multiple mattresses for a household, invest in the best mattress for the bed that gets used most. Savings are fine for secondary beds and guest rooms.

Buy a mattress protector. A waterproof mattress protector costs $40 to $80 and prevents stains from voiding your warranty. This is especially important if you drink tea in bed (a common habit that transfers well to Ontario life).

Skip the box spring. Many Chinese families are accustomed to platform beds or slatted frames. You can use the same approach in Canada.
