The truth is that a coil spring mattress is a more nuanced product than most people realise. The type of coil, the gauge of the steel, the coil geometry, the zoning pattern, all of these matter more than a single number. Understanding them helps you avoid buying a mattress that feels right for the first three months and collapses by year two.

Bonnell Coils

Bonnell coils are the oldest and simplest design, an hourglass-shaped coil connected to its neighbours by a helical wire. This interconnected system is inexpensive to manufacture and reasonably durable in budget applications.

The downside is motion transfer. Because every coil is physically linked to the ones around it, movement on one side of the bed travels across the entire surface. Offset Coils

Offset coils are a refinement of the Bonnell design. The top and bottom of each coil are squared off (offset) rather than round, which creates a hinge-like action as the coil compresses. This allows more precise contouring to the body.

They're still connected by helical wires, so motion transfer is better than Bonnell but not eliminated. Offset coils are a solid mid-range choice and tend to be quite durable because the squared configuration distributes compression stress more evenly across the steel.

Continuous Wire (LFK) Coils

Continuous wire systems, sometimes called LFK (Lura-Flex) coils, are formed from a single strand of wire that runs the entire length of the mattress in a series of loops. Each column of coils is connected within itself.

The result is a firm, consistent feel across the surface. Continuous wire mattresses tend to be quite durable and are less prone to individual coil failure because there are no separate coil units to break down independently. The tradeoff is that they feel fairly uniform, good for stomach sleepers or anyone who prefers a firm, supportive surface, less ideal for side sleepers who need pressure relief at the shoulders and hips.

Individually Wrapped (Pocketed) Coils

Individually wrapped coils, also called pocketed coils or Marshall coils, are each encased in their own fabric pocket. They operate independently of one another.

Here's what coil count actually tells you: how many individual coil units are in the mattress. A queen mattress with 800 coils has more coils than one with 600. That's it. The number alone says nothing about quality, durability, or comfort.

A mattress with 2,000 thin, cheaply gauged coils can perform worse than one with 800 properly tempered, heavy-gauge coils.
